Just taking a stroll through the history of the Battle of Alberta and while it might not be as strong as it once was, it nonetheless persists. I thought it would be interesting to see how current players are comparing to prior hockey players. Taking a look, there are three current Oiler players in the top 20 of Oilers scoring. With four regular season games this year, we could see McDavid could jump from ninth to seventh, overtaking Doug Weight. If they meet in the playoffs, McDavid has a slight chance of getting into sixth and overtaking Charlie Huddy. The next current player to the top twenty is Darnell Nurse who is at 39th.

Taking a look at Calgary, with the departure of Giordano to Seattle, there are only two current Flames players in the top twenty and none in the top ten. That said, with four regular season games, Backlund has a slight chance of getting into the top 10, overtaking Nilson and Roberts, but much more likely if the Flames meet the Oilers in the playoffs.

Good work! Interesting to see these stats even as an outsider to the BoA

I realize Drai has trouble scoring goals against the Flames but damn. He has this mental block against them. I remember a game where he had like three breakaways and he got stopped on every one of them.

Just noted the same thing, and hadn't been aware of that tidbit. Still, seems like the statline is strange.

Pretty impressive tally by Glenn Anderson. 57 goals. I don't think anybody is catching that one.

In fairness the Flames are not a notable team at all. This isn't the matchup where in present time that you even have to bring your best. just another opponent.

Don't remember tbh, I just remember the game where he had a lot of breakaways and got stopped on all of them lol.

I was just checking annual splits. It looks like the totals are legit. Not that I think its any kryptonite or anything but the Flames are a team that has a tendency to cheat coverage and double team and leave openings. For Drai that makes them primo opportunities to just exploit their lapses with passes, like 3 assists tonight. Not like he's suffering for pts in the matchup. Flames are just such a nothing opponent anyway during McDrai tenure.

To be fair he did score #50 against them a few years ago.

57 goals? McDavid might catch that in 2 years.

Pretty sure you're joking but McDavid may never surpass that total during his career. Primarily due to how expansion NHL, and alignment, means that only around 4 games per year will be had against Calgary. Not like it used to be when they were a common opponent due to divisional weighted scheduling in the 80's. So lets say McDavid faces Calgary around 32 games over the next 8 seasons. He would need to go G/G in those to catch Andersons career tallies against Calgary.

I've always heard he was too small, too slow and that he couldn't hack the physicality of the NHL - hmmm... Looked 'OK' from my eyes :sarcasm:[/QUOTE

Also, you still hear (from people who never saw him play, or weren't paying attention) that he was never hit because of Semenko riding shotgun. This idea is so absurd! Gretzky almost never got hit because of his uncanny spacial hockey sense and illusiveness. I remember seeing him get absolutely rocked by a big no name rookie Leaf defenceman on a Hockey Night in Canada broadcast. It was just so shocking to see him get smoked like that because it was a blue moon event. You couldn't hit the guy.
