Something very telling in those Melnyk comments--he's apparently squeezed the budget as much as one can, which leads me to believe the drafting/development team is bare-bones. Remarkable that they've hit as well as they have if that's the case.

Someone whose hockey opinion I trust once said it sure looked like for years that the Sens had like one Swedish super-scout who was keeping the Sens' prospect base afloat for years, don't know if that was Anders Hedberg or not.

Believe you are referring to Anders Forsberg.

"Anders Forsberg, hired by the Senators during the 2007-08 season, and now a coach of Skelleftea of the Swedish Elite League.

Forsberg was recommended to the Senators by renowned Detroit Red Wings Swedish scout Hakan Andersson."

I've seen suggestions for the Sens to rebuild in a couple of different places in the media over the last few days and not a single one of those people mentioned the fact that they owe a 1st round pick to the Avs. You don't necessarily have to tank in order to rebuild/retool but I don't see how you can tear it down completely when you don't have your 1st round pick in one of the next two drafts. Looks like we'll be following their moves closely for the next little while.

Man, if you're Erik Karlsson, even if you love the city of Ottawa to death, why on earth would you want to play for that owner? It would probably hurt like hell to up and bolt the team, but you have to do what's in your best interest, not the owner's.

Ottawa has always had cash problems... even prior to Melynk. He was actually seen as a saviour prior to the divorce. Was rich and spent on the team while being active in the city.

There's really nothing special about the city... I don't see why Karlsson would hate leaving tbh.

Melnyk is a $B and has plenty of cash. Unfairly considered cheap, but they’re always near the cap limit. He does create a lot of mgmt problems though...

The problem is their stadium, they’re located outside town that’s requires at least 30 min. drive and hour + transit. Not only the location being bad, it has little nightlife or entertainment district. Extremely difficult to reach by transit and crazy traffic by car.

Team needs to move to survive and have no idea why the stadium was not built in downtown Ottawa.

I was under the impression that Melnyk has suffered some financial setbacks in recent years, in fact I thought a sale he was putting together this year fell through or something.

Living here for 3 years now, I definitely get that vibe more and more. Not that it's a bad thing really, but I don't think of it as a big city anymore.
It gets worse/better the longer you live in it. I mean all I always consider it now home no matter where I end up but I definitely don't want to waste what ever is left with my 20's here.

I'll probably end up raising my family here though. You never know though.

He has...as stated previously with the divorce.

Yeah for sure. While I enjoy it here, I can't see myself staying after I finish university. Most people I've met here have zero plans on moving though, if I was from a city and didn't have to move for work/school, I wouldn't either most likely.

He sold his medical company Biovail for a few billion$ To Valent before they collapsed. Personal net worth is still at least $1B. Must be tough even in divorce with half this amount.

Yeah the pull of home for sure, get that feeling about Halifax. And I go to Carleton, best school in the city.

It's definitely not the best school in the city. The buildings are old, outdated and the washrooms are nasty AF.

I've been here all my life only reason I would leave permanently would be for work.

The biggest problems for all Canadian NHL teams:

1. They don't win Stanley Cup any longer, this loosing culture among Canadian NHL teams has to stop. For many players it may feel like the end of their career going to a team always loosing? Toronto used to be devastating for young promising talents but now it looks way better, finally.
2. The pressure playing for a Canadian NHL team is huge and lot's of players can't handle it.
3. NHL teams in Canada lack of patience building for the future (maybe because of the huge pressure) and constantly make lots of stupid trades.
4. Financials may sporidically be an issue for some Canadian teams but not for teams like Toronto or Montreal (they can't use this as an excuse).

The situation looks way better this season though which is good, Canada and the NHL teams in Canada are increadibly important for the hockey world.

Also I think that Canadian teams should have Canadian team captains (in general), they need to take responsibility and not shy away. Look at Karlsson now in Ottawa where he is hinting that he may want to leave in the future, you can't talk like this as team captain for a Canadian team, it is a catastrophy when being a leader. A Swede may never feel the same kind of heart and passion for a Canadian team like a Canadian player do, there may always be a difference.

I'm a Swede myself but I think Swedish players sometimes are overrated as captains for North American teams, this has confused me many times during the years. The only real pure Captain leadership talent (suitable for a North American team and mentality) I have seen to come out from Sweden is Landeskog. Landeskog became a team captain too early, yes but I still feel he has the capacity to become a great legendary captain, the next 10 years will tell.

I felt it was a huge mistake making Sundin a captain for the Leafs. Everybody could see this huge responsibility took a big negative impact on him and his play even though he never admit that himself. Sundin was way to calm, almost shy sometimes and laid back for being a NHL team captain if you ask me. The Swedish national team is different, he was perfect for that task.

Many of us Swedes (because of cultural differences etc) are a bit too shy, calm, not very outspoken, too soft in a group (sometimes a team captain need to get angry), not totally fluent in english etc. It's way better doing like Colorado with Forsberg leading by example instead of being forced to become a shy team timid captain as a 20 year old.

You guys have to understand that Sweden in many ways still is a socialist country even though we have a mixed economy with several huge privately owned coorporations (Tetra Pak, H&M, IKEA, Ericsson, Volvo etc). We believe in decisions with everybody agreeing, we believe in "consensus" decision making. Our cooperations usually have rather flat organisation structures, comparing to classical hierarchical structures. I'm just trying to explain that our mindset sometimes may be a bit different from a North American. ;-) We build fantastic strong teams but may sometimes have some leadership issues.

You also need to read the Swedish Law Of Jante to fully understand us. :-D

Canadian teams just aren't nearly as attractive of a destination for players to go to.

They dont make nearly as much(Not as bad now that the Canadian Dollar has recovered a little, but still 1/5th less), the weather is pretty awful, it's cold a lot longer, etc. etc.

The appeal of American teams is much stronger for both superstars and journeyman NHLers. Maybe once a Canadian team or two become legit contenders you might see some players start gravitating towards those cities, but right now, unless you were drafted by a Canadian team or to a lesser extent raised in one of those Canadian cities, the appeal to play here isn't very high at all.
