Generally I don't like totaling the goals/points scored on a team for a few reasons. A lot of players in this series were excellent scorers from the distant past (Smith, Bauer, Oliver); their career numbers are unimpressive because they played in a low-scoring era with a short schedule but what's more important is that they were routinely among the scoring leaders while they played. Also, just totalling the career numbers doesn't distinguish steady consistent players and ones with great peaks - Lemieux being a good example of a player with an amazing peak and low career points (relative to how good he was).

If I relied on only one statistic to see which teams was better offensively, I'd count the number of top ten finishes by team. This quickly shows which players stood the farthest above their peers.

Kingston: 31 (Lemieux 10, Yzerman 6, LeClair 4, Bauer 3, Smith 3, Bailey 3, Hay 2).
Toronto: 13 (Kennedy 4, Oliver 3, Sundin 2, Elias 2, Malkin 1, Nevin 1).

That's a very rough starting point but it confirms my intuition. Kingston was clearly better offensively and Toronto was clearly better defensively. That's why the series went to seven games.
