PK1: Ramsay - Luce - Conacher - Kelly
PK2: Lehtinen - Francis - Johnson - Pulford

PP1: Joliat - Morenz - St. Louis - Johnson - Selanne*
PP2: Martin - Thornton - Francis - Kelly - Suchy
PP2b: (when 7 dmen dressed): Kelly - Gonchar

* Selanne played the point on the powerplay.

Captaincy: Kelly is listened to in the locker room as he was a leader of two dynasties; Francis handles the refs as he was a 12-year captain; Pulford tough talks the bench as he captained the Silver Seven dynasty.

When leading by 2 goals: Lehtinen - Francis - Smith
Or when leading late 3rd: Ramsay - Luce - Lehtinen
When trailing by 2 goals: Martin - Thornton - Selanne
Or when trailing by 2 goals: Martin - Francis - Wheeler

EXTRA NOTES:

1. Lehtinen & Selanne won 4 Olympic medals as wingers on the same line with an undrafted Habs pivot much less skilled than Thornton; Selanne is easily the most prolific Olympic scorer in hockey history on that very line with Lehtinen.
2. Red Horner is a HHOF-inducted defenseman PRAISED by multiple sources for his passing. He isn't just a fighter/goon. Think Sprague Cleghorn but with less extreme off the handle play. Horner is the 6th greatest Leaf defenseman ever on the top 100 all-time Leafs list.
3. Moose Johnson was better than Ching Johnson with the puck. Hockey history is clear on this.

Notes: The "second" and "third" lines should be considered on a par, as they are intended to receive very similar ice times. In late game situations where additional offense is required, the line labeled second will see an increase in ice time at the expense of the line labeled third. In cases where additional defense is required, the reverse will be true. In those situations, the right wings will be swapped. In late game cases where defense is particularly important, the fourth line will receive additional ice time, and that line will also take particularly important defensive draws throughout the game.

Team Info/Highlights
- Defensive team with a defensive coach built around two-way centers Nighbor/Boucher/Kopitar with supporting wingers. We will likely do a lot of scoring on the counter attack
- Although Day was defensive he would allow his elite offensive players leeway, so we do not expect any issues with Conacher or Karlsson
- Speaking of Karlsson, we specifically built a 3rd pairing that was strong defensively in order to get him in the most favorable situations
- Given our defensive strength up front we will likely have less offensive power than some teams. This was addressed in 2 main ways:
1. Good ES scoring depth
2. Special teams: we have several low-penalty players (without sacrificing grit) which should give us more PP's than PK's, we have very strong PKers, and a strong 1st PP unit built to make the most out of our point men, Karlsson and Fetisov (Boucher is the half wall distributer, Conacher and Krutov will be a real handful down low/in the slot)

Coach: Hap Day

Patrick Elias - Frank Nighbor (A) - Charlie Conacher
Vladimir Krutov - Frank Boucher (A) - Rod Gilbert
Zach Parise - Anze Kopitar - Cecil Dillon
Nick Metz/Giroux* - Claude Giroux* - Rick Tocchet

Herb Gardiner - Erik Karlsson
Ryan Suter - Jimmy Thomson

*Giroux will also see time at LW on the 4th line

Chicago Shamrocks Real World Team History
In 1930, James Norris pursued the NHL for rights to a second NHL team in Chicago, but was spurned by the league who supported the NHL Chicago Black Hawks concerns regarding competition for fan base. He turned to the American Hockey Association who gave him rights to an expansion team in Chicago. The league had renamed itself the American Hockey League and declared itself a major league, to the anger of NHL president Frank Calder, who branded the league an outlaw league.

In 1931-32 season, their second, the Shamrocks won the league championship. Convinced they should be given a chance to play for the Stanley Cup, they petitioned the Cup trustees for that opportunity. However the trustees would have to convince the NHL to accept that challenge and the NHL would not. Perhaps frustrated by this, Norris once again looked to join the NHL.

In May 1932, the Detroit Falcons of the NHL declared bankruptcy, and Norris used that opportunity to convince the NHL he could take over the team. The NHL agreed on the condition that he disband the Shamrocks who were a thorn in the side of the Chicago Blackhawks. So he disbanded the Shamrocks and took three of the best players with him to Detroit, renaming the team the Red Wings. The American Hockey League reverted to the American Hockey Association after this and once again demoted itself to minor league status.

BOB PULFORD - DOUG GILMOUR - JOE MULLEN

DON MARCOTTE - WALT TKACZUK - ED WESTFALL

*Lach's scores calculated using ES benchmarks calculated by Black Gold Extractor from 1943-1952 (best 7 years fall in this range)

*The 2nd line will play as much or slightly more than the 1st line at ES.

*Goyette is capable of filling in up and down the lineup given his versatile career as a strong checker (Montreal) and solid offensive C (New York) and will fill if an injury occurs to one of the starting C's.

*Bauer is an injury replacement for a Recchi/Fleury or offensive upgrade on Westfall when we need a jolt of offense. Bauer would roll on the 3rd line as the engine w/Gilmour and Pulford and Mullen dropping to the 4th line as the depth goal getter w/Tkaczuk and Marcotte. If Bauer plays and Westfall sits, Marcotte and Pulford would assume top PK spots w/Gilmour and Prentice taking on 2nd team roles.

DEFENSEMEN:

DENIS POTVIN (C) - SERGE SAVARD

JC TREMBLAY - BUTCH BOUCHARD (A)

JIM SCHOENFELD - ART DUNCAN

*Glen Harmon is an injury replacement for Tremblay and logical partner for Butch Bouchard as they played together for years in Montreal in the 1940's.

GOALIES:

JACQUES PLANTE
ROY WORTERS

SPARES:

BOBBY BAUER
PHIL GOYETTE

GLEN HARMON

SPECIAL TEAMS:

Primary Power Play:

Lalonde RHS (net to slot)

Ovechkin RHS (left circle to point) - Fleury RHS(slot to net) -- Lach LHS(right half wall)

Potvin LHS(point)

Lach is the primary C and first man on the dot though given his strength in that area. Lalonde, the other C will back him up if bounced. Ovechkin will roam between left circle and the blueline, drifting higher when Potvin moves to his right towards Lach.

Secondary Power Play:

Forwards - Doug Gilmour (C) LHS - Mark Recchi LHS - Joe Mullen RHS
Defensemen
-
Denis Potvin LHS - Art Duncan RHS

*Tremblay will sub in for Potvin when Three Rivers hold a lead or come on late for DP in other situations. Given Potvin will be doing very little to no PK'ing, Arbour will be able to use him for nearly the entirety of the PP chances given and more importantly, an increased role at ES.

Primary Penalty Kill:

Pulford (C) -- Westfall

Tremblay -- Savard

Secondary Penalty Kill:

Marcotte -- Tkaczuk (C)

Schoenfeld -- Bouchard

Spare PK players include Prentice, Gilmour, Fleury, Potvin

Usage and effectiveness:

-Westfall's usage and kill rate are both elite, putting him squarely in the conversation as the best PK F ever. Especially when you factor in his 66 points shorthanded (26+40).

-Pulford led the league in SH goals 3 times and had 30 overall + 10 assists, giving the F duo 106 combined points (56+50). Was widely regarded one of the best on the kill in the 06 era.

-Between 1956-57 and 1971-72 (Pulford's career) those 2 ranked 1st and 2nd in SH points, and that cuts out final SEVEN years of Westfall's career.

-Tremblay ranks 4th all time in PK usage since 1960, and 2nd of those with at least 500 games played and only Bobby Orr (0.79), Serge Savard (0.82), and Doug Harvey (0.86) have an effective rate superior. Both these metrics place him firmly in the elite range as a Dman on the kill and contemporary praise paints him in an extremely good light there.

-Savard ranks 12th all time in PK usage since 1960, and 8th of those with at least 500 games played. And his 0.82 kill rate is only bested by Bobby Orr of those players in the top 12. And there is an added bonus in the fact these 2 spent years together in the late 60's and early 70's playing on the same PK units so chemistry is a bonus.
