The sports betting takeover has soured me on the league a bit also.

Agree. We went through this in the UK years ago, though it's settled down somewhat of late.

But the focus has shifted so much away from teams and wins and tactics etc towards the betting lines. Don't mind the odd flutter but it shouldn't be at the centre of the sport (horse-racing and dogs aside).

It definitely adds to my overall disdain for the nhl. Such a bush league in so many ways.

For me, if the Jets go out with a whimper and run it back, I just don't know.

I've been a fan of this team for every moment of their existence in the nhl , both 1 and 2.0.

I just don't want to go through another season knowing that they're going to say all the same things and then just wilt when it gets tough.

It's not like the core is young, this is a mature, experienced team. They should have learned all the lessons they've needed to.

Bones is passed there's no push back but at the end of the day it's the coach that has to sort it out

Yeah I'm feeling the same way a bit.

Big difference between a team that leaves everything it has -- including from the coaching staff -- on the ice, and one that stubbornly refuses to adjust and up its intensity, and just ... fades away.

Still plenty of time for the team to pick things up though. I have hope.

But then, I'm an Arsenal fan through several generations. The bitter taste of organizational incompetence and misplaced loyalty is ever fresh.

Year after bogging year.

I read an article on Sportsnet the other that calculated the cap hit for the roster that started game one.

They are over the cap by just 1 million. That's it. So if you had a cap they'd only really have to swap out one lesser piece.

It's a little skewed because of Hanifin's cap hit being close to 5m but they only get hit with 1.2m. Of course they severely over pay to sign him long term next year. Same goes for Mantha whose Cap hit was 5.7m but they get hit with 2.8m.

It's one of the reasons I've wanted to see more youth added. I've felt for a while that we need a next wave to prop up the core. Perfetti, Snerg and Vilardi are a good start but we need more. Imo we needed to see Ville this year to see if he could be another positive puck mover.

If it fails again this year due to Bones being vet heavy then I think you have to change gears.

Their game 2 roster has a cap hit of $87,204,167

So now that Martinez is back in the lineup they are icing a roster that is $3,704,167 over the cap. Not terribly egregious but still over.

What really grinds people is that NHL GM's continue to help Vegas ice rosters like these for minimal gains. The Flyers took nearly $2.5m of Hanifins cap hit for a 5th round pick. They got Washington to retain almost $3m of Manthas cap hit for a 4th and the Shark retained on Hertl as well.

NHL GM's want Vegas to win cups.

Why do they want Vegas to win the cup?

Was sjs or buf or ott trading for eichel, Hertl or stone etc just for Vegas' gain?

The league is very strict about in-season cap limits - to the point where teams have been forced to play games without 20 players dressed. If you're one penny over in the regular season, you're f***ed.

But when it comes time to determine the league champion - who cares?

Vegas ain't the only one..

The NHL Salary Cap was : $83,500,000

22 teams used LTIR to be cap compliant at the end of the season

Of those 22 teams, 16 of the teams still had some cap space left at the end of the season
Of those 22 teams, 6 teams had $0 left for cap space at the end of the season

Those 6 teams with their final cap hits minus LTIR:

Toronto $97,645,821 - LTIR $14,145,821
Tampa $93,776,877 - LTIR $10,276,877
Vegas $92,239,581 - LTIR $8,739,581
Colorado $90,957,006 - LTIR $7,457,006
Montreal $88,839,908 - LTIR $5,339,908
Vancouver $86,586,876 - LTIR $3,086,876
The team in the NHL with the highest final cap hit without using LTIR to be compliant: Winnipeg Jets

I think there is a difference in terms of teams in which players can't play any longer like Colorado with their captain and the Leafs with their players. Those pieces haven't come back to help unlike Vegas.

I luckily have Prime Video but it looks like any national Jets games next season that are on a Monday, Jets fans would need to be subscribed to Amazon Prime to see it. I imagine that will be problematic for some.
The Jets had 7 Monday games this season, 5 of which were national games on Sportsnet.

Definitely not subscribing to that bullshit. The NHL is f***ing awful at providing their fans a convenient/consistent way to view games.

Piracy is largely a service issue - and the NHL has a massive one. Free streaming options are abundant these days, and they're higher quality than ever. Hope they get their shit together one of these days.

Agree -- but will Arniel the Anointed change things up?

Do think there

RIP Bob Cole.

Sad news. I know he was tough to listen to at the end of his career, but as a kid his was the voice of some of the greatest games and series I ever enjoyed, and a key part of my intro to hockey as a kid who grew up elsewhere.

My dad, who was a high-level D who was on his way to playing in the minors before blowing a knee, knew Bob in a friend-of-a-friend way, and thought highly of him.

The difference is that those teams are using LTIR the way it was designed to be used- to provide cap-relief for teams with legitimately long-term injuries. It wouldn't be fair if Avs could ice a competitive roster due to Landeskog having essential a career ending injury, with the Leafs or the Bolts I don't see Klingberg or Sergachev on the ice... even if Sergachev returns in later rounds everyone knows it was a legitimate injury... man broke his leg and had to relearn how to walk.

Vegas apologists in the media use this argument to defend Vegas (not saying you are) when it is not remotely the same thing. Right now only 1 team is abusing this.
