I want to see if the Oilers buy out Jack Campbell. On the surface, looks crazy because it's like 8 years long as well...but their window is the Mcdavid / drai term which is only 2 and 3 years and they save money up front on Campbell buy out in those years.

I’d honestly probably change that rule. In event of a buyout, retainers simply keep the same cap hit for the same time they would have. No real need to mirror it.

I'm sure this will not slow them down from burying dead contracts out in the desert, not in the least.

But it probably does limit their ability to be the middleman for trades in order to obtain extra picks.

Unfortunately for them, I think their owner expects to compete so they had to open up cap space to change the team. Maybe they were emboldened by Minnesota's turnaround after buying out Parise/Suter?

That D is still a mess though. I think they announced Ethan Bear is out six months after surgery, but I'm not sure if that was retroactive.
