If you're only interested in Ducks' news, then yes, The Athletic might not be a good investment. But if you want to read pieces from all over the sports world, I can't think of a better outlet, even for the price.
Also, the Register is replacing Stephens in the near future, so there will likely still be a free source.

The Register was looking for his replacement however, so there should be someone else stepping in.
