That’s what I meant. Not sure why the confusion. It seems like HF boards just wants to criticize when Anaheim has a glaring hole here with 50 million dollars available. Maybe Anaheim re locates to Canada? No one is helping here. Because your cap floor isn’t going to keep you in the league

Beacuse its a misplaced modifier, can be max years or max contract. Since 5 years is not max term people read it as $. "A max 4-5 year contract" sounds different than "a 4-5 year max contract". Our brains fill in the comma/pause when you dont give us one.

Personally I like the idea of the ducks signing Barrie to 15m per year, but thats just me ;).

The Ducks have solid defensemen and goalie depth with Gibson, Stolarz, Dostal, Lindholm, Fowler, Fleury, Drydale, Manson and other prospects. They have forwards currently trying to take the next steps in Zegras, Comtois, Terry, Lundestrom, etc... And they have cap space.

The Ducks shouldn't focus on picks past this draft or long-term prospects. They need top end goal scorers right now who can improve the PP and actually score goals. If the Ducks were average in goals, they are most likely a playoff team.

My two cents: Sign Hoffman. Retain 50% of Henrique and trade for pick if possible. Trade Manson to NJ for NYI 1st. Trade NYI 1st, Steel, and Mahura to Buffalo for Reinhart. Sign Reinhart. Resign Getzlaf.

Comtois-Zegras-Hoffman
Rakell-Reinhart-Terry
Volkov-Lundestrom-Getzlaf
Jones-Grant-Silf

Lindholm-Fowler
Fleury-Drysdale
Larsson-Shattenkirk

Gibson
Stolarz

The Ducks shouldn't be signing UFAs themselves.

They should take bad contracts in exchange for 1st rounders, as long as they're all guys that are expiring in the next couple years.

And if you're going to trade assets, trade them for young players with cap hit problems.

Examples:

Timo Meier has a $10m QO in two years. He won't get paid that, but it gives him leverage to get a better long term deal. The Ducks can afford him at $8m per.
Patrik Laine has a $7.5m QO. He's bad this year but obviously can still score 50 goals in the right situation. The Ducks have the time and $ to figure out how to set him up for that.
Brock Boeser is another guy with a big QO. He appears to be worth his, but then again its Vancouver. Wait until he has a bad couple weeks and bid for him.

Don't sign Tyson Barrie. You don't want him blocking Drysdale for that long. If Barrie would sign for two years, then sure. Otherwise get Brandon Montour to come back, he will cost half as much.

This team should be hoping for Wright/Bedard/Michkov, not any long term contracts for guys in their 30s.

While its all fun and good that theyll HAVE 50 mil in cap to spend, the better question is SHOULD they spend to the cap in the coming years. Imho, the answer is no. Weaponize the cap space, prepare as best as possible for the 22'+23' drafts, allow the contracts taken on via trade to expire, THEN supplement the new core of steel+zegras+Drysdale with additional vet experience (if whatever combo of guys like fowler, lindholm, rakell, silf, and manson are gone). Maybe get lucky and end up with wright. 3 yr turnaround with a solid pipeline and the ducks should be ready to rock again.

In all probability TJ will waive his NTC/M-NTC and be exposed to the expansion draft and likely with little to no sweetener, the Kraken will gladly take the local kid to one of the original faces of the franchise.

Give Bern back his tin hat and take a time out for a few days.

wtf
what brought this on?

Well said. The Ducks should be open to taking on a bad contract but only a shorter term one, nothing that will get in the way when they are trying to turn a corner. The Backes deal turned out very well for Anaheim and they shouldn't hesitate to make a similar deal. Hopefully get someone who is likewise a great veteran presence for the young team and add some other good assets .

I'll add Buchnevich as another very good forward who may be a realistic trade target and someone the Ducks could lock up long term.

Ducks could become a dumping ground for bad contracts in exchange for picks/prospects. That should help speed things up.
