now THAT is a very fine pick. Too bad we'll see Axelsson name over this guy.

Actually, since Marty is a centre, the Nighthawks 4th line is Tommy Smith - Marty Walsh - P. J. Axelsson with Tardif and Lacroix trying to break onto the roster in training camp ;)

I was more thinking in the overall list.

Anyway, you have 2-3rd of an amazing fourth line. Axelsson ... well he'll try to do what he can.

The Nighthawks of New Haven select three great Soviet rearguards each of whom won multiple Olympics, world championships and played in the legendary 1972 Summit Series, two of them became part of the Big-Four of the seventies and the third was the elder captain of the series, three Red Army greats

Gennady Tsygankov
img4880673thmb.jpg

... an extremely fast and fearless blueliner who never hesitated to block shots or to fight for a puck in the corners. As a team player, he always put team interests above his personal accomplishments. Tsygankov was a key penalty killer on the Team USSR roster... Gennady Tsygankov was the first defense partner of Slava Fetisov. Overall, Tsygankov was arguably one of the best team players in the Soviet hockey.

Alexander Gusev
img4880673thmb.jpg

...one of the strongest Soviet blueliners in the 1970's... Being an exceptionally strong athlete, Gusev was an effective player at both ends of the ice quiet often showcasing mastery of physical game and bodychecking. He enjoyed the respect of hockey specialists for his wicked slapshot and hard-hitting style in defense.
http://www.chidlovski.com/personal/1972/yroster/ru02.htm

Viktor Kuzkin
img4880673thmb.jpg

...began his hockey career as a center forward which helped him to become a successful scoring blueliner with a slick puck handling and skating skills. He became famous for his strong positional hockey skills and ability to lead his team in following the tactical game plan. The Soviet defense pair Kuzkin - Davydov was arguably one of the best in the Soviet hockey history.
http://www.chidlovski.com/personal/1972/yroster/ru04.htm

Key defensemen in the greatest hockey spectacle of all time:

In the 1972 Summit Series, the Soviets iced their patented 5-man units: for games 1,2 and 5 Tsygankov was paired with Ragulin and the Kharlamov-Maltsev-Vikulov line while Gusev-Kuzkin paired with the Petrov line; for game 3 Gusev-Kuzkin were put with the Kharlamov-Maltsev-Mikhailov line and Tsygankov went down to join Lutchenko with the checking line; in game 4 Tsygankov re-joined the top line of Kharlamov-Maltsev-Vikulov, Kuzkin paired with Lutchenko and the Petrov line while Gusev didn't play; in game 6 Ragulin joined Tsygankov with the Maltsev line and neither Gusev nor Kuzkin played; in games 7 and 8 Tsygankov stayed with a makeshift Maltsev line and Gusev-Kuzkin played together again with the Petrov line.

#71 Evgeni Malkin LW/C
He is a gutsy multi faceted power pivot who can propel his body and the game to startling and awe inspiring heights. He is so fast that he bursts like a jet engine as he gains his skating stride. He is an elusive slick stick handler and he executes effortlessly in any gear. He is a penalty killer and can backcheck with ruthlessness utilizing his size and quickness like an advancing army.He is talented beyond his years and fully battle tested in the playoffs as he is leading the pens charge for the 08 cup. He is a Hart Trophy candidate and may well be the Conn Smythe Trophy winner when the playoffs end.

To begin his NHL career, Malkin set a modern-day record as the first player to score at least one goal in each of his first six games. No player had achieved this feat since the league's inaugural season in 1917-18, when Joe Malone scored at least one goal in 14 consecutive games to start his NHL career.-wikipedia

During 2007-08 season pittsburgs star player sidney crosby went down with an injury and during this time Malkin picked up his game and the team and they went on to get 102 points to finish 2nd in the conference.During this career shaping season evgeni has went on to score 106 individual points. He has continued his torrid scoring pace scoring more then a point a game in the playoffs while propelling his team to the semi finals.

Wow. What a weird-ass pick. He's been a nice player for a long time but the big kicker for me is that he hasn't won anything at all -- as you mentioned, not a Selke, not 20 goals, he's won a single playoff series (almost 10 years ago, although I guess that's what he gets for being a Boston Bruin). We validate most mucker-grinder types by their trips to the Stanley Cup finals or by some remarkable two-way goal-scoring ability.
He has played as well defensively as several Selke winners and it's a shame he hasn't won the trophy for best defensive forward.

And plenty of mucker-grinder types are recognized in the ATD, especially defensively talented ones at forward and on the blueline. There's quite a list of non-champion, non-individual awards, non-offensive picks made in this draft.

Now, if you think he's not deserving of being a multiple Selke trophy finalist, that he has not been great defensively, then I can list off countless quotes from those in the hockey world who disagree with you.

Here's hoping hockey history won't forget players like him. :xcheers: Cheers!

New Haven is pleased to welcome a 10-year NHLer who ought to have won the Selke once or twice but hasn't and so is overlooked by the masses but praised constantly by hockey insiders and ultimately by hockey historians it's hoped as his defensive play has been elite, with his speed, positional play and hockey sense putting him quickly in the right place to break up a play time and again, his lack of offense the only thing ironically holding him back from receiving trophies for his defensive excellence, a great penalty killer who can play either wing depending on where the opposition's top winger is, the massively underrated but believed eventually appreciated

Axelsson has had his time in the ATD world once... I mentioned him in the "top-1000" thread which was the forum to name any players who could, in theory, fill in in the MLD. I think he can, and from what I remember, he was well-received by those participating in the thread. ATD material? Not sure.

*fun fact: I knew exactly who you were talking about based on the first paragraph. :thumbu:

nope (that would give those still drafting an unfair advantage if the guy dropped is actually quality)

wait until the draft is actually over (it'll be tomorrow)

then add/drop as you wish

that was what i meant.

if you guys don't mind...

An add/drop thread has been created

to keep things simple and organized

(the dropped players will forever remain on the ATD thread list where was picked, no messing around with what's done)

omg does it really matter?

sure seems to me like ADD/DROP whomever once the last pick of the draft has been made

it actually happen rarely so it dosn't really matter I think. Never use it. Hope very few will use it, unless spectacular reason occur. Only a certain GM, who just selected a certain player should use it. I won't name the GM, but let's call him V. Islander No, too revealing, let's call him Van I. :D

If I remember well, a guy in ATD#1 selected Joe Malone like 11th overall ... and dropped him at the end of the draft to pickup Denis Savard instead!

All-X2 started with 13 teams. The 13th selection was Joe Malone.

After a team dropped out, we had a dispersal draft. You could select a player off the roster of that team and drop one of your players, or pass. He dropped Malone and selected Savard.
