After 17 seasons in the Ottawa Senators, 13 of them as captain, and over 1100 points for the NHL club, on Friday the came the shocking news that he is leaving the Canadian capital to finish his career in the Swede-team Detroit.
His decision - which made the fans in Ottawa to cry and return their season tickets - is still a hot topic in the capital and the reactions are among the citizens are loud.
- There are many mixed feelings, Alfredsson says to Sportbladet.
- I knew it would be loud reactions because of this. But it's a decision I thought through carefully and I thought about it many times. I dont regret my decision, he continues.
"I know what I've done for Ottawa"
40-year-old Alfredsson has played for Ottawa during his entire time in North America. But the successful NHL career will end in rival Detroit.
- I know what I have done for the city, the club and the fans. And what they've done for me. They have been extremely important for my whole family, but how Ottawa fans will see me in 20 years time will tell, says "Alfie," which had six clubs to choose from when the contract with Ottawa went out and he was placed on the free agent- list.
In the end, it was between Boston and Detroit.
- I really like Boston. But the reason why it became Detroit was because I got a really good impression of them. And they had many left handed centers in the team. I think that as a right-handed player I will fit in better. I will probably get more chances to shoot and scoring opportunities next season.
Looking towards the Sochi Olympics
While Alfredsson gearing up for its 18th NHL season, he has already begun to think of the Sochi Olympics next year.
He wants to be a part of the "Tre Kronor".
- Of course, I would love to take a place in the Olympic team.
The chances of taking place must be good?
- I dont have a safe spot in the team at all. The first goal now is to get in shape and be ready for Detroit's training camp in September. I haven't talked at all to Mårts (Pär, coach of the Tre Kronor), but if I'm playing well and the body is in shape I can probably take a place in the team.
Even Jakob Silfverberg leaving Ottawa, what do you think about that trade?
- I think it is a great deal. Ottawa gets Bobby Ryan who could be really good if he continues to develop. He gets a more important role now. While it's sad that Silfverberg leaving, but he will also become a very good player.
