That’s just misdirection due to frustration at his players not allowing themselves to be railroaded. We were supposed to go to the swamp, and beef didn’t have anything setup for the mountains. Mainly because no one in their right mind goes to the mountains.
We’re going to run into backwater mountain elves playing the elvish banjo or something.

You were going that way anyway, right? So you follow them, and they take you to their secret lair, possibly to torture you or whatever, and THEN you jump them. Find their treasure and their magical weapons (gnomes are famous for having magical weapons) and THEN skedaddle out of there.
