Definitely can't bench Severson or Merrill, they've been our two best defenders (the veteran guys have all looked pretty bad at times, including Greene).

The only logical replacement for Gelinas is Larsson; which may not be a bad idea considering we're playing an offensive powerhouse in San Jose next game. Might be a good time to give the kid a look.

Just to play Devils Advocate, wouldnt you want all the offensive firepower you have at your disposal in case you need to score goals vs. said offensive powerhouse

In all honesty, i don't think it makes that enormous of a difference either way, the principle reason is that whilst we had a three game winning streak it was easy to justify Larssons continued exclusion, but since we lost tonight (even though the score looks worse than it actually was) it wouldn't hurt to make a couple of minor changes to shake things up a little but.

In all honesty, Gelinas hasn't been "bad" at all, but he hasn't been amazing either; Severson and Merrill have stood out more amongst the youngsters. Gelinas has been the least impressive of the three, sitting out a game or two and giving Larsson a fair shot to make a claim for the spot isn't a bad idea.

Same goes for the fourth line, i haven't been impressed with Tootoo (or Gionta) not because they've been atrociously bad, but they haven't really looked that good or done anything noteworthy. We have other options, we may as well see what they can bring whilst the season is still in its infancy, especially against the Sharks in a game i imagine we're heavy favourites to lose regardless.

It isn't about punishing certain players, it's about giving everyone a fair chance to stake a claim for their spot, Gelinas has had a few games, give Larsson a couple and see if he can make himself stand out. Same goes for Gomez in my opinion, i severely doubt anyone will claim Tootoo, we can always bring him back up at a later date.

I feel bad.

Moreso for Slammer who won't be able to do a 4th GDT in a row. :(

BTW, I had recorded this game but didn't watch it. I saw the final score and one thing came to mind(aside from Slammer) :

Cory's fault?

Or did the Devils just suck?

Everyone but Severson blew ass. I'd delete that recording ASAP, lol.

I agree that Severson and Merrill shouldn't be taken out of the lineup right now. It'll be interesting to see if/when Severson hits "the Rookie Wall" and then Larsson would definitely get a chance. To me, Gelinas has not played so terribly that he should be taken out. Right now I really do not think Larsson is going to play THAT MUCH better defense than Gelinas to warrant the change (he has definitely improved in his own end compared to the end of last season) , and the offensive game Gelinas brings to the table is far and away better then Larsson's. The Devils are trying to win games here not play guys just to give them "a fair chance" for the hell of it. When someone really plays themselves out of the lineup or gets hurt Larsson will come in.

I agree on the fourth line, I was never a proponent of that line to begin with and would've rather seen Gomez and Brunner.

Pretty good first and then we went to sleep. Cory let in a few he would want back and everyone sort of got sleepy. Long road trip brain fart game.

It's not about punishing Gelly as giving Lars a shot to prove he is better and belongs in there over him.

Gelly looks improved but his ice time is real low and he isn't standing out like the other two kids. Honestly it's a fine time to give Lars a shot.

If Lars can run with it we can start shifting ice time more towards kids and away from Sal (which will be better for us).

If Havlat can't go I want Brunner to get a shot. No reason to do drastic **** and sign Gomez though. That's pushing it.

I wouldn't mind JJ getting a shot over Gio but I doubt that happens.

Ahaha, glad to see there is very little overreaction to the loss. We are on a good start to the season. No need to sour on this loss too much.

End rational thoughts, now back to HF thoughts:

Zomg we lost, time to commit sudoku, brb :sarcasm:

Finally watched the game. That last goal Cory gave up pretty much summed up the game. When it's not your night, it's not your night. Oh well, that's going to happen from time to time. Move on to the next one. Hopefully Havlat is okay and back in the lineup for Saturday. I'm sure he'll be pretty fired up to play against his former team.

Cory...yikes. looking at that fluke one makes me appreciate the little hop marty would do in those situations to avoid those.

what's up with all the 6 goal games this year? entertaining for sure.

Against the Sharks, I would (for 1 game) move Gelly up onto the 4th line & move Ruutu onto a differnt line. Then, let Larsson play & see how motivated he is to be playing.

He should play with fire in his belly after signing that contract & not be playing. Let him play & should he look unmotivated....oh boy!!! Decisions, decisions.

Plus, we need size & methinks this will be the game another injury will rear its ugly head.

I flipped back and forth after the 2nd period with the Jets game, glad I missed the 3rd.

Sounds like a rough showing but they were due for a letdown. 3-1 on an opening 4 game road trip? I'll take that any day of the week.

That's not what it is, your expectations for what a 4th line should be capable of is just a bit overboard. You also are alluding to being some sort of genius that has figured out that the 4th line can be an offensive line. These coaches know a lot more than 99% of the posters on this forum about what may or may not work. They have a hell of a lot more experience in drawing up lines. It also goes beyond what they think could work, they are dealing with players who may or may not like being put on certain lines. I'd prefer Carter over Tootoo right now, but unfortunately it didn't work out.

Maybe at some point Deboer will put a little more offense on the 4th line, but right now, its nothing to be concerned about, and it really should have never been a concern considering the guys that are available to play there.

whenever I see the "the coaches know more than people here, so there!" type posts, I know its time to check out of the argument.

good day.

What were they planning on doing? Playing Schneider the first six games?

I think Clemmensen should have started that game.

Deboer is NOT going to put offense on the 4th line at the EXPENSE of defense and grit. If you want more offense as a coach you shorten the bench and role the top 3 lines a little more...EXACTLY what DeBoer did last night.

Brunner is the worst defensive player on the team, by a lot. He lacks size and grit - He is lost without the puck... Putting him on the 4th is moronic on EVERY level.

I think Clemmensen should have started that game.

They're going to work Schneider pretty hard in the early going. It's probably the only reason they have Kinkaid in the minors. In November the schedule gets pretty tight, I bet we'll see the back up play more then.
