The Sandstrom/Brown incident happened in October of the 87-88 season. JD blew a gasket on MSG..wanted Brown thrown out of the league!

That was one of the worst cheap shots I remember at that time. I do not blame JD.

JD stuck up for our Swedes when we played the dirty Bruins. Some folks who may not remember the beating the Swedes took in that game might remember Mike Milbury beating a Ranger fan with his own shoe.

Totally agree; It was beyond ugly. Brown tried to decapitate him. I'm only laughing at my memory of JD being so passionate. I didn't disagree with him at all & I loved his passion. He was always rooting for the Blueshirts, but he was never a homer, if that makes sense. He always maintained a level of impartiality.

At the same time, the Flyer broadcasters were calling Sandstrom a diver. One of those broadcasters' daughter sings the National Anthem in Philadelphia now.

Never been able to give Gene Hart any respect for the way he and Bobby Taylor called that. It was flat out disgusting. When you think of Philadelphia sports, you even have to go three levels worse to get to what Hart and Taylor were saying.

Kisio was on the team that Summer? His first season with us was 86-87, not sure if I remember that rumored deal though. And Fuhr was still there, trading them Beezer makes no sense.

We had just drafted Brian Leetch, getting Carpenter was like having two of the best young Americans going into the future, obviously it wasn't meant to be, but I can see where they were going with it. Like SBOB said, they were always chasing that bigtime scorer in the 80's. If they had waited just a few years maybe Ridley and Miller go for Bernie Five Cents instead of Granato.

Kisio was picked up before the 1986-87 season, either July or September. Carpenter trade was in January of 1987. Espo's first season as a GM was the 1986 offseason. He got Kisio for Hanlon, but Pocklington was broke and needed cash, so he was peddling Oilers everywhere. That's why Coffey was traded first in 1987-- he had a contract issue and wanted more. Rangers could have had Coffey but Espo didn't want to give up Sandstrom who just had a 40 goal season.

Espo had two trades with Sather-- one for Messier, one for Gretzky and both time Diller/Evans didn't want to fork over the cash. Fuhr was a cokehead and they were looking to move him as well.

I've seen it a bunch. Rangers had good possession that entire game. But so many of the players on that Rangers team like Pavelich and Hedberg just looked tired and worn out.

Why wasn't Rogers playing that game? I've never got a straight answer, ever.

Also, as I said, it's not this big tragedy in Rangers history it's made out to be. There was no way the Rangers beat Montreal or Edmonton that season yet alone a young Washington. 81 and 86 were worse losses.

Rogers didn't join the Rangers till 1988 I believe

No you are thinking of someone else. Rodgers was on of the "original smurfs" as Herbie Brooks brought him here from Hartford in the early 80's to play with Pavelich, Roustoslainen, Eddie Johnstone, Robbie Ftorek.

Rodgers was solid for us as well. Scored alot of points and always gave the Islanders fits. Anyways, you must be thinking of someone else.

Anyone remember the '75 playoff loss to the isles? Parise scored 11 seconds into OT. After a Vickers turnover in the corner.

We were down 3-0 going into the 3rd....came all the way back to tie it.....almost got the 4th goal (Billy Fairbairn hit the post)... sooooo heartbreaking.

Another horrible trade......giving up Mio, Johnstone, and Duguay for Osborne, Blaisdell, and Huber.

Brooks had issues with Duguay. The perception was he was out partying until all hours and being a socialite. His season the year before 82-83 was about as bad as Dubi's 11-12 one. Johnstone was like Cally and was already breaking down.

Osbourne was a useful two way middle six player for a few years. He even came back for one season in 94-95 and I've said it before the picture with them raising the Cup Banner and him being there in January 1995 was just weird to see.

Huber was a former first round pick who hadn't reached his potential. They wanted him to be a monster but he was a PMD and PP guy. Apparently he was playing great that season and then hurt his knee. He changed his game and was a shutdown Dman when the Rangers made their run in 1986.

I don't think it was a bad trade based on production. Duguay had two really good years with Detroit but by 1986 his skills deteriorated and he became a 3rd line PP specialist and someone to plug onto a top line with injuries or short term. They put him with Lemiuex and then he came back to the Rangers and Kings.

Duguay ended up playing wing to Yzerman, Lemieux and Gretzky. Not permanently, but he ended up on lines with those players at times during his run with those clubs. Pretty impressive, not sure how many guys can claim that.

I disagree, I think they win the Conference. Wouldn't have beaten the Oilers, though. Nobody was.

If you've watched that game than you'll notice the main reason we lost was because Billy Smith, a player I couldn't stand, played about as good as a goaltender can play during that game. If you can recall how great JD was vs Isles back in the 1979 ECF, well that's how good Billy Smith was vs us that series. After we went up 2-1 in the series, Smith only let up 3 more goals to us in the final 2 games and alot of the chances we had were grade A chances. He was unbelievable. Hated him even more after that series was over.

Smith stole game 5.

Thats very true, I recall it was Dionne who assisted on the teams fastest pp goal, won a faceoff to Leetch who slapped home a pp goal one second into the pp?

I recall Grant Ledyard scoring a really fast PPG, but that was before Dionne was on the team. It was in 1985. I remember for two reasons. The Rangers won big and they were having, and had, a bad year in 84-85. Also, it was the night the Mets traded for Gary Carter.

Decent player. I remember him being in some weird trade thing where he went from Calgary, to Hartford to the Rangers back to Hartford back to Calgary. Something like that.

Yes, I remember that Ledyard goal too, though his was from the point off a faceoff, Leetch's record 1 sec into the PP was from the side of the faceoff dot, Leetch was positioned with the Wingers and Dionne won the faceoff to him cleanly and fast, Leetch one timed it just as fast as the puck was dropped.

Someone must have the video clip somewhere, I havent seen that goal in forever but remember it vividly.

Also, msg needs to open the vaults more, play some of those 80's and 90's games more often.....

Was just about to post the bold part. I would love to see these games again. Especially 1990 Islander series with the Jeep hit on Patty La and the subsequent brawl.

Not only is it a shame that the fans of that era don't get a chance to see some of the older classics, but also stinks for the newer/younger fans who only get to see 1994 over and over again.

There is some dude on Youtube who has a treasure trove of old Ranger games that he posts most of them from the late 70's to early 90's. Most of what he posts aren't full games but there are some very cool snipets of games most of them 15-30 minutes worth that this guy somehow got his hands on. It's very cool to listen to Jim Gordon and the Big Whistle with their commentary and the dude had quite a few Sam and Espo and Sam and JD games.

If I'm allowed to post the guys name, one of the moderators in LMK and I'll do so. If not, LMK that as well. I don't want to break any HF rules as I'm not 100% clear as to what the rules are on these sorts of things.

He's actually a poster here and has a podcast we all know. If he needs to be summoned, he's pretty easy to find, just shine the Bat Signal.

As for that 1990 playoff series, I can see why MSG wouldn't show it in the PC era. That and the 1992 Devils series had their fair share of WWF moments.

It was fun when they showed the 2-2 Rangers/Islanders game in 1985 when Potvin hit some landmark. Ridley scored late in the 3rd.

Would love to see some 80s and also 90s games more often. Even the years after the Cup from 95-97, I feel a lot of those games are never shown anymore.

Is that true? I had no idea of this. So to make sure we are talking about the same dude, on Youtube the guy has "crisis" as part of the title of his entries? Are we talking about the same guy? If so, is it cool to mention his site so that some of the peeps on this thread who said they wished the could see more old time Ranger games/highlights from the old days can get their fix? As I said, I don't 100% know the posting rules here.

Cool beans...thx Bat. So for those of y'all who don't know what Batman and I are talking about and who need a fix and want to see some Ranger games from back in the 80's and 90's go to Youtube and type in the search box "NY Rangers Crisis Show" and you'll be able to see plenty of old time Ranger games and it will bring back good memories for old timers and newcomers alike.

I've watched a lot of old games on that channel. My favorite is game 5 of the '79 series. Hedberg scoring late to beat the Islanders at the Coliseum. I listened to that game on the radio in my sister's room on her "hi-fi." The one down side is it's the Islanders broadcast and Stan Fischler is basically rooting on the air.
