When : From June 8th to June 12th
Where : Palais des congrès of Montreal
Price : 1$ per ticket (1 to 8 tickets per beers but can go higher)
Beers : http://festivalmondialbiere.qc.ca/pdf/MondialBiere-Beers-ciders-2016.pdf

It's the time of year again!

USA's offering is probably the worst I've seen since I go (10 years).

Here's what's on my list of stuff to try :

Norway
NØGNE Ø : Kriek of Telemark
NØGNE Ø : Imperial Rye Porter (collaboration with Terrapin)

USA
Captain Lawrence Brewing Co. : Barrel Select Gold
Captain Lawrence Brewing Co. : Hudson Valley Harvest Sour Strawberry
Captain Lawrence Brewing Co. : Rosso e Marrone
Weyerbacher : Riserva

Québec
Brasseurs du Monde : Assemblage Fruits-Brett
Brasseurs du Monde : Gueuze 2014
Brasseurs du Monde : Cerisette du bretteux
Brasseurs du Monde : Porter de glace 5
Trou du Diable : Bella Ciao
Benelux : DIPA 10e Anniversaire
Oshlag : Inca РBi̬re vapeur
Oshlag : Nano IPA
Dunham : Assemblage no.1
Dunham : Saison Rustique variation brett drei
Dunham : Saison Fleurs Sauvages

My suggestions :

Québec
Trou du Diable : Dulcis Succubus
Kruhnen : King Cogne
Benelux : Grande Armada Réserve 2015
Dieu du Ciel : Moralité
Les Trois Mousquetaires : Berliner weisse
Vox Populi : Double Fruit Punch IPA
MaBrasserie : Everything
Dunham : Petite mort

Stuff to avoid :
Brasseurs RJ
McAuslan
Grimoire
Granville Island
1664
Carlsberg
Dos Equis
Krombacher
Grolsch
Newcastle
Rickard's
Mad Jack
Creemore springs
Alexander Keith's

This "stuff to avoid" list doesn't necessarily mean the beers are terrible but it's mostly cheap and easy to find beers that aren't worth trying at the Mondial. It includes all Labatt and Molson distributed beers other than Goose Island.

Ah yeah.. I'll be there.

Question: Why do you recommend avoiding Grimoire?

IIRC I've has several beer shots from there that weren't just their commercial bottled product.

Because it's ****, the owners are ********** and they have absolutely no respect for the product. They took Breughel's place as Québec's worst micro since they got shut down.

In that case you should make a 3rd list ;)

Well I don't know about that.

Personally I'm going to avoid Benelux. I'm a bit disappointed that I'll have to walk to Le Pub des Soeurs Grises do have a pint of their brews. How the hell aren't they at the fest?

Not sure why exactly, but I would think it's because their system doesn't hold enough capacity to be able to produce for the Mondial AND their pub.

I have a friend who lives in Percé and heaps praise on Pit Caribou beers. Have they ever been at the Mondial and have any of you ever tatsed any? Just curious.

Pit Caribou makes greaaat beer. They have been at the Mondial a few times and it's always worth trying.

One of the brewery founders left it recently to open his own one named Auval. I have personally never tried one of their beers yet since the distribution is very limited but people have told me it's incredible. If you ever come across a bottle of Auval you should definitely buy it.

Are they offering mostly seasonal summer beers ?

Auval is amazing... better than Pit Caribou... i'll recommand Arcane 17 and Super A.. if you like IPA...

I live in Gaspésie... so their products are kind of easy to find...

I'll suggest Vic Secret IPA, from Norway, I tasted it when I was in Brussels last Fall. It'S not an easy beer however.

Beau's is also an amazing brewery IMHO

The Duchesse de Bourgogne is interesting but you should be able to find it in a SAQ shop.

There's a lot of variety. The seasonal light beers are there sure, but that's just not the point of the fest. I tasted a lot of dark chocolate stouts or weird stuff like whiskey/hemp ales in the past events.

A couple of interesting names popping up:

Les Trois Mousquetaires: Porter Baltique Édition spéciale (Pretty sure I had the normal edition before, and that was quality)
Microbrasserie Noire et Blanche: Rastafayan Fou D’cave
Microbrasserie Noire et Blanche: Lacroix Fou D’cave
Microbrasserie Noire et Blanche: Fluide largement québécois
Microbrasserie Noire et Blanche: Cougar
Loup Rouge: Mackroken Maple

Le Temps d'une Pinte: OsstidShow de Boucane

This thing is a rip-off full of 450 people and in a terrible venue too. Just go to Benelux pub instead if you want top notch craft beer in a more civilized setting.

Duchesse de Bourgogne is one of my favorite. Another one I really like is Innis & Gunn original. So much flavor.

Depends when you go. If you go after 5pm it gets crowded and on week-ends I agree with you it's full of 450 *****.

Between noon and 5 pm it's the best of time and very enjoyable.

Yes, go early because new beers are in limited quantities anyway. I go there for lunch and stay there till ~4pm.
