Well they waived most everyone I figured might be the tweener/press box guys they might want to hang onto…. So not related to that..

agree with the tweet it is likely to give them options to max the LTIR thing…. We were trying to figure out if we demote necas on paper but that would make the money thing weird to get the right combo of contracts…. Having more options to piece together the right contracts to hit as close to the cap as possible and maximize the LTIR of Gards make sense as well..

I mean, this is about what I expected. I wonder if the Canes also waive Brendan Smith for cap purposes in order to max the LTIR, though they might determine that his cheap cap hit and long-time NHL tenure is likely to make him a waiver claim target.

I mean, this is what everyone expected. Noesen, Lajoie, Leivo, CJ Smith, and Gelinas were always likely to be waived. And Very few rookies had a chance of making the squad.

Trocheck is hurt? I'm so shocked.
Rumor has it he was given a polonium cocktail by Russian agents. They confused him with a journalist, so honest mistake.
If Leivo clears he's great organizational depth for us with good NHL experience. I've liked him in the past but did not notice him much in the preseason.
Leivo and the rest of those 4th line/journeyman NHL tweeners basically did nothing to establish themselves above Lorentz or any of the rookies so I am not surprised they were waived. I still think they could all be decent 4th liners and 13th forwards on other teams though.

I think Noesen stood out fairly positively for that type of role compared to the others. I am still comfortable with many of them as options and also very comfortable with what several young guys showed.

I dont think I'd move Staal up unless they really really don't want kotkaniemi at center. If its just a few games he should be able to fill in. Maybe stack his wings a little and go with a top 6 like this?

Nino Aho necas
Svech kotkaniemi teravainen

Again if its just a few games. If its longer term maybe not
I am thinking of adding Teravainen to my fantasy pool thinking he is playing on the 1st line with Aho. Is he playing on the 1st line or 2nd line?

Rod tends to resort back to keeping Aho and Teravainen together but I wouldn't be surprised if Turbo starts on the 2nd line for a little while. And he could stick there... No one really knows and I'm sure it'll change a few times during the season.

He could be 1st line with Aho, or 2nd line with Trochek or even "other 2nd line" with Staal. He's solid defensively and plays well with just about anyone so Rod moves him around a lot. He'll be on the 1st PP unit though.

Oilers fan popping in in peace. How did Leivo look in camp? Just looking at past stats it seems like he's a decent offensive contributor (especially on a 750k contract)?

He was just kind of "there". Didn't make an impression positively or negatively. Pretty much the definition of what a GM is looking for in an injury callup, someone who will fill that 4th line slot without making waves.

when you think back to aho signing the offer sheet, he knew there was a remote possibility that he might have to play there. it makes me wonder if kotkaniemi is a close friend. if aho signed off on this or even better pushed for it to happen, that's going to be really cool for them and will probably manifest on the ice. if it was a "bring him here and let me play with him" we should be incredibly excited by it.

A Finnish poster in another thread said he thought that they didn't know each other that well and they never played together.

EDIT: Aho said as much in the N&O article.

Aho, 24, said he has never played in international competition with Kotkaniemi, 21, and does not know him well. He did say they “talked a little” after the offer sheet was made.

I have similar impression. They haven't played together internationally, they are from different clubs and enough age difference that they haven't really met in junior national teams. Of course Finns are close-knit and it's natural to contact other Finns in matters like this.

Would be cool if Kotka clucks with Aho and TT. That would be a cool line for the Olympics.

I edited my prior post. Aho said he didn't know him well.
