ha ha! Goddamn....yeah. Nico really made me eat my words and I'm happy for it.

Hope the same for Nemec, tbh.

EDIT : @PKs Broken Stick , but in that same thread you linked I acknowledged my error :

I know, but my point was that you were so adamant about Patrick being the correct pick, just like you are now with Wright. I find it hilarious honestly.

I am still scratching my head over the Flyers. Trade Ghost because his cap hit was too high and then use that cap money and lots of picks on Risto, who is also a pylon but can't score, then trade for the scumbag with more picks because no one on your blue line can score.

Insanity
The summary from the TDA thread. Brutal.

In
Rasmus Ristolainen
Tony DeAngelo
7th round pick

Out
D Shayne Gostisbehre
D Robert Hagg
2021 1st Round Pick
2022 2nd Round Pick
2023 2nd Round Pick
2024 2nd Round Pick
2023 3rd Round Pick
2022 4th Round Pick
2022 7th Round Pick

No one is going to overpay. Look at what we just moved for Vanecek coming off 2 much better years. At best we'd get that same return AND we'd then need to find another goalie in that dried up goalie market you mentioned. It would literally make no sense to move him in the scenario you're laying out.
supply and demand

this year it was probably a good idea to strike early, as i expect the demand to pass the supply. capped out teams will not just look at any options. they need cost effective options. the difference between debrincat and hagel in trade return was closer than on the ice.

Can I just say that I hated the way this draft went logistically league wide? I wish we did first round Friday night and the rest Saturday. Having to keep track of it while at work, while not being allowed to actually be on the phone or computer at work, annoyed the F out of me today.
Come to Europe.

I mostly missed the first round, which started for me 1AM Friday. The second round was perfect. 5PM Friday afternoon I checked out of my Home Office.

don't know if its true or not but rumor on the Habs board is that during the player meetings the grilled both Slafkovksy and Wright about their deficiencies. Slaf was calm and agreed with some of the criticisms while arguing others. Wright however apparently was "Shook" and his answers didn't please the Habs draft team.

Sorta does line up a bit given his "deserved being picked 1OA" comment.
I’m not sure I buy it. I could see the shock in Wright. He thought he was going first. If he was grilled and didn’t respond well he might have had more doubt about it.

I would love to hear what Nemec thinks about Slafkovsky's game, and what Slafkovsky thinks about Nemec's since they played together. Players know this better than any GM or scout, they live it.

I watched a video of the two together and Nemec appears to have pretty soft looking hands. Nice touch passes and noticeably agile as he breaks out and passes while transitioning to offense. I had my heart set on Slafkovsky or Wright but will have to get over it. Nemec might be a surprise and be a wonderful pick, I just hate seeing a player as big and talented as Slafkovsky slip away. A big power forward is so valuable in the playoffs and can be a momentum changer when the series gets chippy. That being said he could wind up being streaky. We will soon find out.

Our team is growing with talent and I think we will really see it this year.

From my understanding Fitz has been in pretty close contact with Craig Ramsay (his old coach in FLA) the Slovakian HC. Out of anyone he would have the best idea what these 2 guys are capable of. I don't think it's a secret we wanted Slaf but the MVP of the playoffs was an offensive minded D, I'm all for it.

Just getting caught up here after watching the initial draft night and was dismissing people calling for Fitz's head, but did they really select 4 (!) RHD? 3 after Nemec? Hahahaha

Clown show.

That's like discontinuing pulling out just to keep her around in the hope it'll keep her around once the kid is 3 despite all the other deficiencies which used to be a strength in the relationship.

This draft wasn't very sexy but I think overall this is the sort of draft we needed. We have a ton of mid forwards either playing pro or late stage college, but we needed to get the ball rolling on defense.

Take a bunch of guys with various skill sets and traits, stash them away, come back in three years and see what you have. Defensemen take time, so let them start marinating now when we don't need them.

None of these guys outside of Nemec are going to be anything within the next three years, but we don't need them to be. The guys who will be pushing for spots the next few years are already in the organization.

I like the forwards and goalie we took as developmental picks, they all clearly have some projectable strengths and obvious areas of improvement.

Overall I'd give this draft a B-. Again, not very sexy but I think most guys we picked have a shot at pro careers.

Not the first analogy that comes to mind

I've been out in Nashville for 3 days straight. Pull out, draft more sensibly, and have Xanax, milk, starbursts, electrolytes, and b12 on the ready for the inevitable fallout.

I'm full of weird ass metaphors right now and going back to bed.

Btw, that first sentence made more sense than half the posts immediately after the Nemec pick and significantly more sense than the devil's drafting strategy.

Glad I could entertain you, sir.

But somehow I think Wright will fare just a tad better than Nolan Patrick.

Just a hunch.

Since the Devils went with Nemec, I am now sitting here hoping that it works out for us.

Yep. I mean...if he was going to go just about every pick at RHD, he could've picked Wright and did that anyway.

I'm beginning to believe he was hell-bent on getting Nemec - Wright be damned - if Slaf was off the board. Sigh....

You seem concerned that it might be a zero sum game where the success of one precludes the success of the other. I think that is unlikely. I think it’s easy to project all the top guys to have good outcomes. Maybe nobody is Makar and maybe nobody is McDavid but if Nemec has a solid positive impact on the eventual upward trajectory of the Devils it’s a worthwhile pick at a very difficult position to find.

Yes, Nemec was most likely 2nd on their board. So once Slaf was gone, their BPA was Nemec.

Which is why I'm hoping it works out for us (or rather the Devils).

Continuing to whine about it won't change things for me but it makes me feel better so....

...DAMMIT FITZ!!! ARRRRGH!!

You're missing the point though. Even if we move Blackwood for a high return in that "dry market" then we're giving up a high price to replace him in that "dry market". It makes no sense.
