I took a look on the Lightning website and it appears Brad Whelen has been promoted to Assistant Director of Amateur Scouting in replacement of Darryl Plandowski joining The Coyotes. Whelen was hired by Yzerman back in 2011 and primarily scouted the WHL and western Canada.

So based off his area he'd probably be the guy credited with the Point pick, right? Unless I'm missing some intricate backstory like that story Joe Smith just did on Palat.

With Button moving him up and Pronman mentioning him as high as Detroit, Ottawa's 2nd pick, and NJ, I'm curious if Askarov is a late riser who could go higher than people think.

Hard to say. The majority of the articles I've read give credit to Al Murray, who lives in Regina, which is about 45 minutes away from Moose Jaw. I've also seen some that say Whelen had been watching him for a long time as well. So maybe a team effort there.

Gunler would be a good boom or bust choice
Yeah that's an interesting one. Most rankings have him as a 1st rounder. If he falls to us, that might not be a good thing. On the flip side, a guy who seems to be rising up the rankings is Chinakhov. He's fully taking advantage of the draft taking place in October instead of June. He was in the MHL last season, but he's now playing in the KHL this season and having some early success with Omsk (7pts in 12 games).

Specific draft picks are rarely the product of a single scout 'finding' them. Point was known for a few years by every scout in N. America and would have been seen multiple times by 6 or 7 Bolt scouts (although the WHL-based guys would obviously have a few more sightings and insights).

What really counts is backing a player who you feel others on your club are underrating in the draft build-up meetings. If you really go to bat for your guy, and he turns out well, you get big kudos.

Let's hope Luke Tuch falls to us and maybe he will be as good as his brother :sarcasm:. Interested in the scouting report on Egor Sokolov though, he has got some size could project into a decent power forward.

If I remember correctly,Yegor Sokolov played really well for Russia on previous WCH u20. So he could be good addition for Tampa in future

There's absolutely no chance Gunler makes it to 62, I also can't see how he makes it out of the 1st round. We don't draft Swedes so he could be there at 62 and would still pass. If a team picks Askarov in the top 10 that's a mistake. He's the best goalie in the draft but not a top 10 pick. Sokolov is already 20 he's a big kid but he played the season as a 6'4 230 19 year old against kids from 16-19. He has a great shot but don't think the rest of his game is good enough to be a 2nd round pick. Would take a flyer on him with one of the 3rds or the Detroit 4th.
