A bit disappointed South Africa couldn't make the final, but I'll settle with the bronze. Pity for Japan but their tournament was impressive anyway. Congrats to Fiji, first and well deserved GOLD medal.

Athletically and physically, the Brits look like 12 year old boys next to the Fijians. Those guys are insanely built.

It was men playing boys yesterday, I was amazed. I never really watched Rugby before but the sevens was quite a bit of fun to watch.

Normally, I would root for GB but I told a Brit friend, I have to root for Fiji in this instance, and he took no offense. He invited to Vegas to the sevens to party with some of his hooligan friends (lol they're not), I am definitely attending.

My first time really watching it seriously as well, became a huge fan. Not every day you get to see a country win its first Olympic medal, and have it be a Gold, to boot.

Am I also invited?

There is a sevens world series sort of thing, where they have a number of tournaments around the world throughout the season.

I don't think there are any domestic leagues, a lot of these guys are signed by pro regular Rugby Union clubs and specialise in sevens. Really though the skill level of these players is not that great, most of them are nobodies in regular rugby union. The only real big name in this Olympics was Sonny Bill Williams who has switched between Rugby League and Rugby Union so many times and can play sevens as well because he's that versatile. France and Fiji also had 1 player who are in the regular international XV.

They are two almost entirely different discipline sevens and fifteens. Most of the players with the top teams are centrally contracted. Most are decent fifteen a side players albeit not of the top calibre.

However several teams use the sevens circuit to hone the passing and technical skills of their youngsters. Several of the current Pumas back line like de la Fuente, Moroni, Imhoff and Cordero have come through this route.

This is also true of the All Blacks, sevens is a good proving ground for young players on a big stage. A number of All Blacks have come through the sevens circuit early in their career, including some huge stars like Jonah and Cullen.

If top players have come through this route I don't really understand why they didnt just send them to this tournament. I watched this thinking someone like Mike Brown or a quick running scrum half like Rhys Webb would do a good job for GB.

Maybe is it because it's a different type of fitness and stamina required and they've moved away from that and have got used to the fitness they need for 15s?
