Thought I'd start the thread for the event I'm looking forward to the most.

Obviously hoping for my girl Aliya Mustafina to have another successful campaign. Fully expecting Simone Biles to take all-around gold and a few apparatus golds, and USA to easily win women's team gold. Can't wait for all the bandwagoners to find the thread.

Hoping Claudia Fragapane will medal for GB on floor, and GB men to win a team medal and some individual medals.

I would love Mustafina to win. or just some kind of upset re: Biles - i can imagine all the drama  but yah it should be a 4 gold medal haul for the USA,maybe 5 if Aly repeats.

I've got nothing against Simone Biles but imagine the NBC seethe if a Russian beats their golden girl

me either. like if she wins - she wins, and considering she hasn't lost a major competition in three years, why would she now, but then - Jordyn Weiber was looking pretty darn good until she didn't qualify so i guess i'm on team drama ;) NBC would lose it if Biies doesn't win gold.

But for that to happen, truly, someone is going to have the meet of her life, and still count on biles to make a mistake. her difficulty is outrageous. (I miss the old days when - if you used to make a mistake, it actually mattered in Gymnastics. now a days you could fall, and have all the balance checks in the world but if you can do a difficult move, you're still good to go).

Yeah in I think it was the 2014 Commonwealth Games the Indian vault specialist girl won a bronze. She did one really crap vault, then thought she would have nothing to lose by attempting a handspring double front which has an insane start value as her 2nd vault, and she miraculously landed it.

Same thing with McKayla in the last Olympics when she fell, I think because her feet hit the mat first it still counted as completing the move which gave her the start value and combined with the other vault got her the silver

So my understanding is the US women are like 10 fold the favorites they were in 2012 and they were overwhelming favorites then and won by several points if I recall

I wish there was more attention on Kohei Uchimura. If he wins the all-around again it would probably be his last and will cap off what is already the greatest run ever.

Toba with a good performance on the pommel horse after badly twisting his knee.
Edit: just saw the French gymnast. That was bad.

Beyond the gruesome aspect of seeing a lower leg break and limbs pointing in the wrong direction, I can't help but feel so sad for these athletes who train insanely hard, having their Olympic dreams end in that manner.

The stuff gymnasts put their bodies through is insane... kind of surprised that this stuff doesn't happen more on landings from the vault, actually.

It does happen fairly often but it's usually serious soft tissue injuries rather than broken bones. Mustafina tore an ACL on a vault landing in 2011.

Something is off with that vault. I know during podium training it was moving a bit - there were a lot of men falling forward and to the side - enough to make me (if i were a coach) asked for it to be checked out.

that French guy... oi. at first i thought it was his knee then i realised his leg was .. oi.

Yeah, I remember hearing about that.

I'd be interested in a sport science (ESPN thingy) on the amount of cumulative force and stress exerted on a gymnast's body, especially lower, throughout their career. Short career, obviously, for a reason.

Saw the picture. Wish I didn't.

Yahoo Sports has an article about it, with a warning for graphic video next to the headline.....and then the picture with the leg going every which direction ABOVE the link to click. So you are seeing it either way there.
