New Lottery Rules for 2016
NHL announces changes to Draft Lottery format
Under phase-in plan, odds will be adjusted to reflect increasing competitive balance in 2015; Lottery will be expanded to determine first three selections in 2016

2016 NHL Draft Lottery

Beginning in 2016, the Draft Lottery will be utilized to assign the top three drafting slots in the NHL Draft, an expansion over previous years when the Draft Lottery was used to determine the winner of the first overall selection only.

Three draws will be held: the 1st Lottery draw will determine the Club selecting first overall, the 2nd Lottery draw will determine the Club selecting second overall and the 3rd Lottery draw will determine the club selecting third overall.

As a result of this change, the team earning the fewest points during the regular season will no longer be guaranteed, at worst, the second overall pick. That club could fall as low as fourth overall.

If the Leafs keep winning - we're gonna have two picks in the middle of the 1st round.

I'm not worried about getting a high pick. Besides Matthews, there doesn't appear to be any must-have franchise players in this draft. Mainly just average top 6/top 4 players which we can still get in the top 15. The real franchise defining moves are drafting great players beyond the first round.

seems like we're winning games where we get outshot like always.. which is the only way they're gonna be able to win seeing as theyre an awfully unskilled group. please start playing more possession hockey

I don't think if they can keep up the pace and will end bottom, and we hopefully we can draft in top 3

We really don't need a pick in the top 5-10. I'd say the best part of our draft in 2015 came after the 4th overall pick when management got creative and flexed their muscle. I'd like to see us draft around 10 and then around 20 and see how the draft turns out. Granted we're also potentially looking at an extra 2nd, maybe a couple 3rds, so on so forth. Start drafting those diamonds in the rough. Detroit has done it, even recently with Mantha and Larkin (Even Svechnikov is a great pick). We have Rielly, Nylander and Marner, let's start to add around that.

i mostly agree but i think the ability of a proper coach is showing. when carlyle was fired the team was in a playoff spot. we dont have kessel but we give up less goals.

skill wise we are bottom 3 forsure but proper coaching + grit and we could very well be a bubble team.

Honestly speaking...I think tanking isn't gonna happen anymore with the new rules on the lottery. It was clear that sabres and arizona did it on purpose and they still lost out to the oilers.

I do agree that we are playing much better but with lack of talent it's very hard to keep up with the pace, we are going to be competitive but not enough to contend for any thing. The results are definitely there but still need couple of years to be able to contend (which in itself is a big achievement). This team is overachieving for the last 10 or so games

Someone said that Laine has attitude issues. He really don't have anymore, but he has had. But it was a long time ago.

the Sabres didn't lose anything, the best tank team last year's reward was always likely Eichel, they got their reward.

Now like you said the best tank team gets a reward of ~50% chance at the 4th pick, and 50% chance at the top 3.

Matthews would be ideal, but even coming in last would give us low chances of getting him. I'm fine with drafting in the top 10 at this point and understand that it is the likely outcome.

Though this crop doesn't seem star studded like last year, I still like a lot of names and would be fine guys like Nylander, McLeod and Brown.

Really? The Oilers have consistently been stockpiling talented forwards and refusing to address their defense and goaltending for years. If that's not tanking, what is?

And it's gotten them where exactly? I've seen flames, panthers and so on they do well wihout the oilers tactics

Right now based on where we are in the standings on not accounting for the lottery I see us getting either Nylander, or McLeod.

Edmonton - Austin Matthews
Carolina - Patrick Laine
Colorado - Jakob Chychrun
Columbus - Jesse Puljujarvi
Calgary - Matthew Tkachuk
Philadelphia - Alex Nylander
Toronto - Michael McLeod
