“We think the top three have clearly separated themselves,” said Dennis MacInnis, the chief scout of Independent Scouting Service. “There’s a clear break after those top three (Matthews, Puljujarvi and Laine) down to the next tier, which runs about a dozen deep — from No. 4 to No. 16.

My attempt at a mock (1-30). Will probably do 2nd round at some point.

1 Leafs = C – Auston Matthews (Switzerland) – Leafs FINALLY get their franchise #1C. Compared to the likes of Kopitar, Malkin, Barkov, and Toews, Matthews could easily end up being the best player to ever play for the Leafs.

2 Jets = W – Patrik Laine (Finland) – The Jets are thrilled to even be picking here, let alone getting a stud like Laine. There is some debate that the other Fin may end up the better player long-term, but Laine is the consensus #2 who projects to be a 40-goal-scorer with lots of character.

3 Blue Jackets = W – Jesse Puljujarvi (Finland) – Jackets’ GM is ecstatic to get a Fin of this calibre. Pool-Party projects to be a bigger, more dynamic Hossa, and some believe he could end up better than Laine.

4 Oilers = W – Matthew Tkachuk (OHL) – It’ll either be the Oilers or whoever they trade the pick to who drafts Tkachuk at 4. Is there a chance MTL trades Subban for a package including this pick, where they’d select Dubois? Ya never know, but probably not.

5 Canucks = W/C – Pierre-Luc Dubois (QMJHL) – Canucks will (and should) take whichever of Tkachuk/Dubois is left at 5, with perhaps some thought given to Nylander. Everyone knows the Canucks need to rebuild, but this will still be a solid pick for their “retool-on-the-fly” that’s been ordered by maligned and oft-criticized owner, Aquilini.

6 Flames = W – Alex Nylander (OHL) – Flames happily take Nylander, by far the best winger available, and a great fit for their offense-starved lineup. Thought was given to a PF like Jones, Gauthier, as well as Jost.

7 Coyotes = D – Olli Juolevi (OHL) – With plenty of offense in the pipeline, the Coyotes need D, and it just so happens the BPA left on the board is a dman. Juolevi projects to be similar to Maatta, who should be a pretty solid fit on their OEL-led blueline.

8 Sabres = D – Jakob Chychrun (OHL) – Sabres want one of Juolevi/Chychrun, so they’re happy to get the dynamic Chychrun, who should be a good fit with Ristolainen.

9 Canadiens = C – Clayton Keller (USHL) – It’s no secret the Habs lack high-end offensive talent. Luckily for them, Keller/Jost are both great options here, and they’ll get to choose between the two. Ultimately, they decide on Keller, who may have a little more offensive upside.

10 Avalanche = D – Mikhail Sergachev (OHL) – The Avs are a dysfunctional mess. They desperately need help on D, at wing, and becoming a much better possession team. Lots of options they could go with here, and it’s a tough choice. Ultimately, the Avs make the smart, obvious choice here and select Sergachev, the BPA who also happens to be a defenseman.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

11 Devils = C/W – Tyson Jost (BCHL) – GM Shero made a somewhat surprising pick at #6 last year, taking Zacha. I personally liked it a lot at the time, and it looks like it’s paying off for NJ. Taking another high ceiling forward this year makes sense, and they go with a good one in Jost.

12 Senators = W – Vitali Abramov (QMJHL) – The Sens are stuck on the dreaded treadmill of mediocrity; owner Melnyk is notoriously cheap and wants playoff revenue every year. And Karlsson is getting ever-closer to UFA. They do have some nice young talent and had an excellent first round last year with Chabot/White. Ottawa make the first surprise pick of the draft by selecting the electrifying winger, Abramov, who they believe can be a high-end offensive talent.

13 Hurricanes = C – Michael McLeod (OHL) – GM Francis had a fantastic draft last year with Hanifin/Aho, and I expect him to make another great selection this year. Could go any number of ways, but ultimately they choose the blazingly-fast, two-way workhorse C, McLeod.

14 Bruins = W – Max Jones (OHL) – Much like the Canucks, everyone realizes the Bruins need to rebuild except for, you guessed it, their ownership, who’d rather limp into the playoffs as the 8th seed and get trounced as opposed to selling off and rebuilding. It’s been a nightmare in Beantown to say the least. Hoping to put last year’s draft behind him, Sweeney makes a solid pick here with Jones.

15 Wild = C – German Rubtsov (Russia – MHL) – The Wild love their two-way C’s with size. Detroit’s not going to be happy, but Minnesota chooses Rubtsov here. Is probably slightly undervalued due to flying under the radar in the MHL.

16 Red Wings = C – Luke Kunin (Big Ten) – Detroit is flabbergasted that Rubtsov goes one pick before them, but the Wings have a solid backup plan in Kunin.

17 Predators = D – Jake Bean (WHL) Nashville ends the run on forwards. Bean projects to be a point-producer from the backend and may have underrated defensive skills. Probably becomes another solid Dman for the Preds.

18 Flyers = C – Pascal Laberge (QMJHL) – Philly is absolutely stacked on D, luckily there are a lot of forward options. They’re going to get a good one here, and a perfect fit to boot, in Laberge.

19 Islanders = D – Charlie McAvoy NYI gladly takes the falling McAvoy and adds him to their impressive prospect pool.

20 Coyotes (from Rangers) = D – Dante Fabbro (BCHL) ARI is happy select Fabbro at 20. They’ve done very well for themselves here in the first round. Really bolstered their depleted D prospects. Watch out for the Yotes.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

21 Hurricanes (from Kings) = D – Lucas Johansen (WHL) – Carolina goes D here after going F earlier. I like the pick.

22 Jets (from Hawks) = C – Logan Brown (OHL) – Another faller, Jets scoop up Brown and add him to their ridiculously deep prospect pool. The Jets can afford to gamble on him being better than Joe Colborne.

23 Panthers = D – Frederic Allard (QMJHL) – New Cats GM makes his first pick, and Allard is a sleeper. He’s got a decent frame, plenty of character, and offensive skill. Analytics like him and favor his production translating to the NHL.

24 Ducks = W – Kieffer Bellows (USHL) – Despite many on their list being taken, Ducks still get Bellows, who’s both a good pick and a great fit.

25 Stars = G – Carter Hart (WHL) – The Stars get their tender of the future in the first goalie taken in the draft. Solid pick that just makes sense.

26 Capitals = D – Logan Stanley (OHL) – Caps take the huge shutdown D who falls to them. Should be a good fit down the road as Orpik ages.

27 Lightning = C – Will Bitten (OHL) - Bolts get a swiss army knife-type of two-way C. One projection is Mike Fisher with more offense. Sounds like a damn good player. Could be a solid 2-3C in the future, perhaps replacing Filppula at some point.

28 Blues = W Alex DeBrincat (OHL) – Blues make a great pick here. Debrincat could be a dynamic points-producer if his game translates.

29 Bruins (from Sharks) = W – Riley Tufte (USHL) – Lots of options for Bruins here, especially between Tufte/Gauthier, but ultimately they go with Tufte who has better hockey sense.

30 Leafs (from Penguins) = D – Markus Niemelainen (OHL) – The towering Fin has good upside as a solid two-way defender. He’s flown under the radar for whatever reason, but the Leafs should have a solid tab on him since he played for Saginaw.

According to TSN hockey insider Bob McKenzie, the Toronto Maple Leafs are not interested in trading the #1 overall pick in the 2016 NHL draft. They like Auston Matthews.

http://iphone.tsn.ca/tsnpodcasts/LL_McKenzie_June32016.mp3

“Okay. Let’s approach this on a couple of levels. Are the Toronto Maple Leafs interested in trading the No. 1 overall pick? No, they’re not. They like Auston Matthews. They think they really earned this honor, if you want to call it that, by finishing where they did. ‘It was our year.’ You can say it went perfectly according to plan, and on many levels it did, but it’s still hard to be the worst team in the National Hockey League, and the Leafs worked at it, and they were. So to get this reward is hard-earned. And I don’t think they would easily think of giving that up. Never say never, but I would seriously doubt the Leafs are interested in moving that."

“Now, do the Arizona Coyotes have interest in Auston Matthews because he’s a homegrown kid from the Phoenix area? Absolutely, they do. Are they willing to pay an exorbitant price that might perk up the ears of the Toronto Maple Leafs? No, I don’t believe that they will. I don’t think they’re as bullish on making this deal as many would lead you to believe because of where Matthews grew up and what he might mean from a marketing point of view, never mind the hockey side of it."

“I’ve heard rumors out there that, ‘Oh yeah, they’re going to give up Max Domi, Dylan Strome and the No. 7 overall pick, and if they have to they’ll throw in No. 20 or Christian Dvorak to make it happen."

“I don’t believe for a moment that they are interested in giving up what they believe are foundational players in their organization. I don’t think they want to give up Max Domi under any circumstances. I don’t think they want to give up Dylan Strome under any circumstances."

“Could I see them offering the No. 7 and the No. 20 pick and a player like Christian Dvorak? Sure, I could see that. I don’t think that even gets the Leafs to pick up the phone."

“I’m sure that they’re likely to be dialogue between the two organizations, but I’m not sure I necessarily see a fit there because I don’t believe that Arizona is going to get so emotional as to make a really bad hockey deal, and that’s what it would take for the Lafs to have to listen and give up the potential opportunity to have a franchise No. 1 center.â€

There's a tonne of guys trending up into second round and Sean Day is a guy trending down. He might end up being better than them but I'd rather go with the guys trending up for that 61st pick. This isn't a deep draft in terms of the top 10 or 20 in comparison to last year but there's a bunch of intriguing and quality depth into the second and third imo. Could very well be a European skater like Grundstrom that gets missed and falls to the 61st pick or one of those WHL guys that didn't make the jump that was expected but still had good seasons.

I don't get the picks at 30 and 31. If Johansen is the honourable mention at 30, why is Mascherin the pick at 31?

Connor Bunnamun. Not wowing upside but someone that I could see take a Leivo-like jump and have a good shot to be a solid nhler. Good pro skill base.

Dylan wells for me possibly.
Sean Allen,Kristian Afanansyev, Luke Kirwan (sleeper IMO)
There's this giant who is draft eligible this year but I can't remember his name. I believe he plays for Ottawa or somewhere in the OHL. Name sounded Russian. Anyone know who I'm talking about? haha

Stephan Falkovsky?

Because I think atleast one of them will be gone by 30. Just hoping 1 is available at 30.

I'm hoping to trade up for either Fabbro or McAvoy, that would be perfect in my books.

Speaking of needs, that would fill a) RHD spot in the future and b) our defensive needs.

Assuming we're taking Matthews as nr. 1, defencemen should be the targets with the next few picks.

Say that we trade up for 14-17, there's got to be either of Fabbro or McAvoy available, and then at 29/30 or 31, which ever decide to keep after the trade up, take someone like Hajek or Johansen - that would be one huge haul to the D prospect pool.

I really like Mascherin, and hope that we snag him in the 2nd, but if that won't happen, then we should take a goalie, whose ever left at our second 2nd round pick.

e: Speaking of fallers, if Gauthier is available at the end of the first, no way should we pass on his potential, IMO.

Most scouts think that hockey sense isn't something you can teach, it's just something they have. With that information, I'd say anyone taking him in the Top 60 is really swinging for the fences. It'd have to be a team that has a good core and is set for the future. Maybe a Tampa Bay?

That said, Gardiner went 17th overall, so maybe there's a chance Day goes higher than I expect. :dunno:

I'm still taking my chances with him. Learning to play D is tough and I don't think he ever learned how to do it as a kid because he was so good he didn't need to. Now he has had to learn against older and smarter players and has struggled. Maybe he will never have great instincts but with the proper coaching and mentors there's no reason why he can't become a solid NHL D. I just think he needs more time to develop and for people to lower their expectations from a modern Bobby Orr to a Jay Bouwmeester (lite, maybe).

Ryan Lindgren looks really good. I like the way he moves around the ice, controls the puck, Impressive passing skills, really QB's a PP very effectively. Think he's gonna get drafted higher than he's currently projected.

Crazy. Kunin looks quite a bit bigger than Auston when they stand beside each other.

Did the least amount of bench press in his group, only 6 but I see a lot of untapped physical potential. He's a beast on the ice and if we get him set up with Roberts or something? Oh boy.
