Really, though, he is.

Letting a mere technicality get you rustled is useless. You could order your jersey (if we weren't rolling out a new one.

There is a grammatical and logical difference between "is" and "will be". One is factually correct based on our situation, the other is not.

Now, you can deny there is no difference (you'd be wrong) or argue it's technically insignificant. The latter is fine, it probably is insignificant. But that still doesn't make it any less correct/annoying/pet peeve.

Matthews is to Arizona what McDavid is to Toronto and the desire and will to try obtain the local kid would be high so it would be out of curiosity alone be an interesting debate as to what would be too much to pay to make it happen when the team wants something so badly.

If Edmonton (hypothetically) would say give us Matthews, Rielly and 1st and we will send you McDavid would it be too heavy a price?. Similarly if TO told Arizona send us OEL, Strome, 7th and 22nd overall would they do it or better question should they do it?

Its fun to speculate and dream of possibilities but at the end of the day these teams are running a business and there will be a breaking point where is simply wouldn't make sense to pay "whatever it takes".

Of course trading off too much of your future in a lopsided deal doesn't make sense but to get McDavid we might over pay slightly and too Arizona may also but it would have to make sense for both teams even if one team is getting a player that they covet and slightly overpay, to do so.

Now we can focus on the important picks, which are the Pittsburgh pick & #31. We still have 12 picks this draft, which is insane.

Leafs SHOULD consider serious offers for that first overall pick. It wasn't long ago that NYIslanders offered ALL of their 2012 picks to Columbus for the right to draft Ryan Murray at #2 but Columbus didn't have the GUTS to accept. IF they had accepted, they could have taken Morgan Rielly or Filip Forsberg with 4th overall, Damon Severson at 34, Jimmy Vesey, Shane Gostisbehere or Frederik Anderson at 65 and so on...Instead they took Ryan Murray who has accumulated just 49 points in the NHL! So, be prepared to listen and be confident in Mark Hunter's skills. It could turn out to be an offer too good to refuse!

I agree you need to listen to all offers.

Your argument is flawed as defense-man in the top 5 typically have a different optimal success rate.

I would consider Matthews for Laine if it included the right +. Will have to watch them closely in the wc. I still think Matthews is the best prospect but he is not a generational talent and the younger Laine has been getting better and better. I am not sure Winnipeg would pay that much to flip picks.

I posted this in a thread on main board so this is just copy paste:

I think for the Leafs this isn't the time to get fancy by trading the 1st OA pick. Still need to add quite a few pieces (and few current ones to continue developing and improving) just to make the playoffs. If it was Edmonton winning the Lottery, i could see them at least considering options to help the team take the next step by targeting a good defenceman, but Leafs should just remain calm and pick whoever they feel is (and will be when all is said and done) the best player in the draft.

But just for lols: Coyotes do have some very good pieces, but if they were looking to acquire the #1 pick from Toronto, going from #7 to #1 just wouldn't work. They would first have to move up to #3 spot and from there make a deal for #1 pick so the Leafs would still get one of big three at #3 spot. Would Blue Jackets want Strome (+sweeteners) for #3 pick? Then you package #3 and #7 (if you didn't use it for first deal, else other pieces) for #1. The reason i think something like that would theoretically work is if Blue Jackets would want a potential #1 center after trading away Ryan Johansen, and if the Leafs would consider Puljujärvi as someone who could potentially have as high celling as Matthews or Laine and could make him a center.

Now us Leafs fans say NO, NO WAY! to all ideas about trading #1 overall, but if the Leafs MANAGEMENT theoretically see Matthews and Laine as equal talent and think Puljujärvi could actually turn out as good or maybe even better and could maybe even move to play center why wouldn't you consider?

I wonder if we can spin that Pittsburgh pick and random prospects and extra picks into another top 10 pick? Would it be worth it?

Yep I would if we could get Chychrun or Sergachev with that pick. Otherwise move up a bit and get Fabbro

I don't understand why people would not want to listen to what Arizona would offer to obtain an asset that they covet and in a deal that may greatly improve the Leafs and they would dismiss out of hand a deal and decide what Arizona should or should not do.

Every deal is based on what a team feels is what they need and since there is no deal on the table and no one knows what is offered or counter offered, we can speculate on what a deal may be.

It basically boils down to this. There isn't a package that fits our team needs and wants that Arizona SHOULD or WOULD give up. Any package that we want destroys a chance they have to be competitive in the near and long term future. End of story.

There isn't a scenario where trading Matthews to Arizona makes sense outside of fantasy where people aren't thinking about Arizona's needs as an organization (which go far beyond one player, even one as good as Matthews). Sure Arizona management COULD go crazy and offer some ludicrous offer but that is HIGHLY unlikely and outside the realm of possibility and in the realm of fantasy.

I'm not sure any team would do it TBH. The gap may be too big for them, especially if the Pens make the final four - plus for us, I'm not really interested in going all out and moving multiple picks do to so.

I'd be more than content with staying at wherever the Pens pick falls and 31st.

I'd rather use those assets to try and land a young player in the NHL now (like Barrie) to solidify the current core group. Otherwise just let Hunter go to work and find some gems in that late 1st/early 2nd round range

We need to target Dmitri Sokolov once we get out of the 1st round. 30 goals, 53 pts on a terrible Sudbury team. He alone scored 16% of all their goals this season.

Ranked around 120, I would take him with the Caps 2nd or our 3rd.

He had a great season for where he was, guy has loads of potential.

I think our 4th is where we should aim for him, there are better players that will be available at the end of the second/start of the third.

Used to think that was a good idea, but I don't think it is anymore. Goalies are a crapshoot, and you gotta go with best player available.

Just hope Hart or Fitzpatrick drop to 60.

We have NOTHING in terms of goalie prospects we NEED Carter Hart
