Missing a few key guys (Dowd, Farmer, Murphy) - none of the guys playing in North America (Prince, Stewart etc.)

Dowd especially is a massive loss - but still a possibility for GB. They'll be hoping to make it to Sunday with a chance to win a place in the next round - in a straight shootout with Italy.

We overperformed in the last set of Olympic Qualifiers - looking forward to the tournament this weekend.

can someone explain how this works? Do these teams have a tournament for one qualifier? One per pool? Or, is this a qualifier for another qualifier?

No Wojtek Wolski?

He's Polish and was born in Poland, but has never actually played for Poland...ever.

I don't think he's eligible since I believe he moved to Canada at a young age. Still needs another two and half years to play in Poland's league, but he did admit he would like to play for them. IIHF have crazy strict rules on what applies as a player able to play for a country. While if FIFA, all you need is citizenship and choose who you want to play for.

For some reason I thought he played once a while back after he was out of the NHL. Weird I can remember a picture of him in a Polish jersey.

During the 2012 NHL lockout, he played for Ciarko PBS Bank KH Sanok in the PHL, the top-tier hockey league in Poland. While he holds dual citizenship, Wolski is a product of the Canadian training system and is currently ineligible to represent Poland internationally.

The three tournaments now will play round robin, with the winner of each group going onto the final group stage in September. Another tournament will be held then with three groups, and the winner of each of those will play in the 2018 Olympics.

Poland games will be available on TVP Sport and their website sport.tvp.pl

Unfortunately their streams usually aren't available outside of Poland. As a Pole living in Germany, I noticed that several times.

But there's at least TV coverage which should result in streams popping up, and one could also maybe use a proxy, I guess.

Hope we can make it to the next round, will be tough to beat Hungary, though.

Wolski would have to play two full seasons for a polish team, then he'd be able to play for Poland.

Japan outshot Croatia 43-8, but only led 1-0 going into the final 5 minutes

You sure it wasn't the Avs in Team Croatia sweaters? :sarcasm:

Poland beats Lithuania by a score of 9-1.
If Hungary beats Estonia tonight (which they will), everything will be set up for a final game between Hungary and Poland, deciding who goes on to the next round.

These final games never go well for the Poles I'm learning.

Yeah, lost a close one against Hungary in the final game of last year's 1A WC. Would have been promoted if they had won it.

The result - Hungary won 2-1 on an ENG after Poland tied it with ~3 minutes to go - was closer than the actual play on the ice, though. Hungary outplayed us most of the game. Excited to see if we can match them better on Sunday!

It was a close game in those final minutes though, real exciting finish. And as much as I'd like to see Poland advance on Sunday, I feel they won't be able to, especially with 7000 Hungarian fans supporting the home team. Would be real good for Polish hockey if they could though, and a nice bit of revenge for last year.
