Oh, ok. I thought that the "3 run lead" rule actually came from the tying run being in the hole.

nope, there are 3 ways you can get a save.

pitch the last 3 innings(or more)

pitch the last inning and when you came in the lead was 3 or less

tying run on deck when you come in and you finish the game.

and of course you can't get the win and the save so if any of these things happen to the winning pitcher they don't get the save too.
