Tim Campbell scored both goals for Lethbridge, giving him 6 on the season, to complete the sweep for Lethbridge. So the #7 team sweeps the #2 team in the standings. This looks like an ultra-conmpetitive season in the CW this year. Both sides switched goaltenders, which IMO is wise when teams play an afternoon game after an evening game. Both goaltenders were exceptionally busy. Damien Ketlo racked up the win, stopping 38 of 39 shots. Eric Williams stopped 33 of 35 shots in the losing effort.

After two weekends away the Herd comes home as a team on a hot streak. They are 4-0-1 and their opponets have been UBC, Calgary, and Alberta. These numbers exceed expectations. Now the team needs to show if this is an upward trend of a team coming together, or just a blip.

The H0rny Ones have not been the pushovers they used to be. They have won 3 straight and are not all that far away from a top 6 playoff berth. They are 7th, just one point behind MRU and Calgary. In the last 4 seasons the Bisons hold a 13-3 lead in head to head play, including 8-0 at home. But in an early season series a year ago, the Bisons were swept by the Horns. One more point that weekend and the Bisons would have finished 4th, and hosted the quarter-final round. Even though Lethbridge is improved, this is a series where the Bisons need 3, or even 4, points to establish themselves as a potential conference contender.

Both sides have developed a goalie rotation. Despite having a load of new players, the Horns have two veteran goaltenders. Fifth year Dylan Tait has survived a cancer scare and this year's numbers (3-3-1, 2.88 GAA, and .927 S%) are superior to his career numbers (5-29-2, 4.23 GAA, and .899 S%). Damien Ketlo is similar (this year he is 1-2-0, 2.71 GAA, and ,921 S%, career is 5-39-0, 5.19 GAA, ..877 S%).

In contrast, the Bisons have been rotating 2nd year Byron Spriggs and rookie Justin Paulic. After s slow start, Paulic has found his form. He has improved to 2-1-1, 2.86 GAA, and .914 S%. Last year Spriggs went from backup to starter and picked up where he left off last year. He is 3-2-1, 2.52 GAA, and .923 S%.

On the other side, the Horns have just one player in the Top 20 scorers, namely Mitchell Maxwell (3-7-10). Meanwhile, the Bisons have 3: Jordan DePape (5-9-14, tied for 1st), Shaq Merasty (5-7-12), and Brett Stovin (4-4-8).

It is surprising that these two teams lead the conference. The shockwaves would be minimal, though, if one or both fell into the mid-pack in the standings.

The Mutts have 9 wins, 6 by one goal (2 in OT) and one by two goals. After two consecutive seasons where they were eliminated in the quarter-finals (once by UBC) there were many question marks hanging over the Mutts. They had some years where the recruiting class was far below par. But this year, their top two scorers are rookies. Andrew Johnson (4-7-11) and Kohl Baumi (2-8-10) lead the way. Second year goaltender Jordon Cooke has started 9 of 10 thus far.

There is no question that UBC is off to a good start. But last season was the first time they had a home playoff series since the 1970s. What's woth all the overtime? They have 4 OT games already (and are 1-3 in those games). They do have the league's co-leading scorer (Anthoiny Bardaro at 6-8-14), but where Sask's scoring is spread out with 3 players in the top 20, UBC has but two (Luke Lockhart at 3-5-8 is tied for 18th-20th).

This unlikely feature series of the weekend could say a lot about these two teams.

This home-and-home match-up used to be a series warranting national attention. That was back in 2014-15. Now, Bedrock U is clinging to a playoff berth and the Evil Monkeys are scratching their armpits, throwing bananas at one another, and swinging by the vines. Each weekend it seems to be the same story, except when the Monkeys played Regina: Outshoot opponent by a wide margin, yet win/lose a tight game. By the stats, and by past performance, one would expect the Primates to go on a roll any time now. Nobody wants to be their opponent when that happens.

The Cat Fight! Cougars v Cougars. Just like closing time at the Palomino, as the cliche goes. Let's call them the "Bluegars" and "Banjo-Cats" so we know what's what. Well, Regina can be counted on to have one good game and one stinker each weekend it seems. But what about MRU? After a 3rd place finish last year they have struggled to find the same form. The Banjo-Cats need to go on a roll if they want to get in the playoff picture and MRU is tied with Calgary in 5th and 6th. Being 6 points back, Regina needs clean wins right here to make it close.

When there is a Friday night game followed by a Saturday afternoon game there is often not enough time to do a Friday night recap. So I waited until all the results were in to do one massive weekend report.

The story in this series was the lack of goaltending for the Bisons. After being named stars in all four games the past two weekends, neither goaltender distinguished himself at home.

Friday night's game was a real shoot-out. The Bisons outshot the H0rny Ones 40-36 but when a save was needed they never got it. While there were not that many penalties, the Lethbridge PP was effective, going 2 for 3 and scoring within seconds of the expiry of the other.

In the 1st period, the Bisons were trailing 3-1, despite giving up just 10 shots on goal. The 3rd goal for the Horns was scored by #13 Mitchell Maxwell. He skated around the whole team and put it past Justin Paulic in the Bison goal.

The 2nd period was one of the most entertaining periods I have seen. The Bisons outscored the Horns 3-2 though being outshot 19-13. A pair of 3rd period goals 24 seconds apart seemed to put it away for Lethbridge. However, the Bisons put on a great deal of late pressure. With an empty net and about a minute left, a potential 7-6 goal was barely deflected off the knob of Damien Ketlo's stick and the crossbar. I don't recall the last time the Bisons scored 5 goals and lost.

Saturday afternoon was a similar game, with fewer dramatic moments. Byron Spriggs started for Manitoba and Dylan Tait for Lethbridge. The Bisons outshot the Horns 33-30. However, after the Horns scored 4 goals on 12 shots in the 1st period the chances of a comeback were slim and none.

As for overall impressions, the Horns are definitely an improved team. The league has now played 6 weekends and they have been tough on everyone they have played. They sit 5th at 6-5-1 and have only Regina to play to finish the 1st half. The Bisons are one point back of them at 5-5-2.

The Bisons host the Saskies next weekend, on Friday at 7:00 and Saturday at a very awkward 4:00.

Ugh. The Banjo-Cats were dominated on home ice in a shocking manner. Not to put down the Bluegars, but nobody should be dominated this extensively.

Friday's game started out OK. It was 2-2 early in the 2nd. Somehow Regina gave up 7 unanswered goals, while being outshot 42-16 on the night.

Saturday was better but still not close. MRU built a 3-0 lead over two periods. It seems funny that there would be 6 goals in the 3rd, but such is possible on a funny weekend I guess.

Both teams used just one goaltender. Mitch Kilgore took both losses for Regina and Colin Cooper claimed two wins for MRU. Dawson McAuley did not suit up for Regina on either night.

In this battle for 1st place, the Saskies easily took control with a sound win on Friday night. They built period leads of 1-0 and 3-0 while holding UBC to just 11 shots. In the end, the shots were 25-20 in favour of Sask. Jordon Cooke got the win and Eric Williams took the loss.

The Saturday rematch was strange. UBC came out guns-a-blazin', taking a 3-0 1st period lead whilst outshooting the Banjo-Mutts 17-9. The Mutts were far from finished, however. In the 2nd period they outshot UBC 19-3 and scored twice. The 3rd period saw the Huskies tie the game while outshooting UBC 10-2. But UBC scored on their 2nd shot of the period to escape with a 4-3 win. Jordon Cooke again started for Sask while UBC conrinued to rotate, going with Matt Hewitt.

This was a split series and game 1 was in the Town of Bedrock. The Dinos' playoff hopes could become a page right out of history. The stats were not as one-sided as the scoreline. However, with period leads of 1-0 and 3-0, the Evil Monkeys were never in trouble throughout the game.

The scene switched to Edmontown for the Saturday night rematch. The teams stuck with Luke Siemens in goal for Alberta and Steven Stanford for Bedrock U. It was 0-0 after regulation, and that says it all. The shots were 33-26 in favour of the Monkeys. The results leave Calgary out of the playoffs if the season ended today.

The Banjo-Mutts are in town so steer clear of any local fire hydrants. This a strange weekend in that the Saturday game starts at 4:00, which ticks me off to no end. I have Jets tickets for a 6:00 p.m. game. I thought this was going to be a 1:00 p.m. start. Jeesh.

This weekend marks the end of the first half of the CW regular season. The big question is whether Sask is as good as their 10-2-0 record would indicate. After finishing in 6th place last year, they were bound to improve. But this much? We'll see.

The Bisons are in 6th place, one point ahead of Calgary and just 5 points out of second place. One weekend can make a big difference in the standings. Like last weekend. The Bisons entered at #10 in the Official Hollywood Top 36 rankings, and left as #16. Sask is now #1 after UNB lost twice. As one looks across the standings, this is a very wide-open season across the country.

The CW LeagueStats have composite records for the last 5 years. Since these teams have yet to meet this season, we have 4 years of head-to-head we can look at. The Bisons hold a 9-7 edge in those years, including 4-0 last year. The key this weekend will be goaltending. After neimng stars twice each in trips to Bedrock and Edmontown, both Bison goaltenders fell flat against the H0rny Ones.

These teams are tied for 2nd place, 3 points behind Sask. This will tell us if UBC are a contender. The Evil Monkeys are off to a shaky start, but IMO are still the favourite to finish first. UBC is just getting ready no for the heavy lifting. Although UBC are the higher ranked team (and deservedly so) my expectation is that the Apes will emerge as #2 in the CW.

This cross-town series has produced many good games already, especially when the teams were fighting it out for 2nd place last year. Now, however, Bedrock U has fallen all the way to 7th in the standings and #20 in the OHT36, 10 places below MRU. The Bisons sit 2 points behind 4th place MRU and 1 point ahead of Bedrock, so they are likely hoping that neitehr game goes into overtime.

This used to be the battle for the wooden spoon, but no more. The H0rny Ones jumped from #22 to #11 with a big sweep of Manitoba. They are over .500 and it has been ages since they have been in such a lofty place this late in the season. Regina is in a rough spot and there must be much doubt amongst their players about their ability to go anywhere this season. I suspect they will give one good performance this weekend. We'll see where that gets them.

The story of this game was the goaltending issue. The game was 3-3 after two periods and was a very closely fought game. However, after the Bisons had the jump in the 3rd period, a counter-attack by the Banjo-Mutts at the 5 minute mark led to a soft goal. From then on the Bisons sputtered and the game was lost. The Bisons once again had trouble hitting the net on golden opportunities. Callis, Merasty, and Stovin scored for Manitoba. Byron Spriggs took the loss stopping 33 of 38 shots (with one emoty netter) and Blake Voth stopped 26 of 29 shots in picking up the win.

Sometimes it is easoer to play as an underdog. The H0rny Ones may have discovered this is a wild game back at home. The Horns scored first but after that it was nothing but a chorus of banjos. Each team topped the 40 shot mark. Ian McNulty notched a hat-trick for the Cats, and that was in the 3rd period alone. Mitch Kilgore got the win and Damien Ketlo took the loss. Both must be exhausted.

With Christmas break around corner, is there any news of new recruits popping up for second semester ?

I've heard both Kyle Blaney (Ryerson) & Cody McNaughton (Guelph) will become academically eligible in January but any other news out there for new additions?

I had to miss this game due to its 4:00 start. I had Jets tickets. Then a sick 15 year old dof has had me diostratcted, so here is a really late post. I did see a period plus on CanadaWest.tv.

This weekend marks the end of one round robin in the CW. Each team has played 2 games against each other team. More on that later.

This is a very rare Thursday-Friday series out in Banjoland. I was out at a junior game and spied on this one through CanadaWest.tv. The Bisons dominated the play from what I saw. Jordan DePape had 2 goals and 2 assists. Justin Paulic got the win, stopping 24 of 26 shots.

After Regina swept Lethbridge on the road last weekend, they must have had some hopes of a turn-about heading home. This win gives the Bisons 5 straight wins on road. The rematch goes Friday at 7:00 p.m.

Here's an Oral History of the 1995-96 Waterloo Warriors Queen's Cup championship team that I wrote ahead of Waterloo's annual alumni weekend:

www.gowarriorsgo.ca/oralhistory

Also, the Warriors are commemorating the 20th anniversary of that team in a banner-raising ceremony on Saturday night. They'll also honour All-Canadian John Wynne, who was named CIAU player of the year in 1995-96. The details are here:

The Bisons have wrapped up the 1st semester with a weekend sweep in Banjoland. After one more week of classes, the Herd will write their first exams then take a Christmas break. All but Coach Sirant, that is. He will be one of the CIS coaches of the team set to take on the Canadian World Juniors. The Team Toronto CIS was not a very good team, so they will be bolstered with 6 players from each of the AUS and CW this year.

In the game at hand, the Kittens roared (as much as a kitten could roar) out of the starting gates in the 1st period. Though they outshot the Bisons 10-4, Byron Spriggs was up to the task, stopping all shots. Shaq Merasty scored his 10th of the season and the Bisons held a 1-0 lead.

The Bisons took control of the game in the 2nd period after the Kittens tied it up. Three unanswered goals (Justin Augert with his 4th and Brett Stovin with his 7th and 8th) put the game away. The Kittens stopped playing with yarn to mount a 3rd period comeback, whoch included Ian McNulty's 7th goal of the season. However, Zach Waldvogel scored his 1st as a Bison to put the game away.

In other game notes, Brock Sutherland did not dress for either game. Regina went with Mitch Kilgore in goal, and he stopped 30 of 34 shots in taking the loss. The Bisons continued their rotation, and Spriggs stopped 33 of 36 shots.

The next action for the Bisons will be on the weekend of Jnuary 8 and 9 when the Evil Monkeys swing from vine to vine into the Wayne Fleming Arena on the U of M campus.

The Bluegars have been climbing up the standings and this big road win the Saskatown emphasizes the point. The Saskies now lead the CW with 24 points whilst the Bluegars sit 3rd at 20. This was a close game all the way through, with the final goal coming into an empty net. Colin Cooper got the win, stopping 26 of 29 shots. Jordon Cooke stopped 23 of 27 in taking the loss. Both of those goaltenders have carried the load for their teams all season.

The Dinos needed this win badly. They are now tied with Lethbridge for the 6th and final playoff berth. The once-lofty Tweety-Birds are now perched precariously in 4th place, one point ahead of Manitoba. Former Bird Steven Stafford stopped 21 shots for the shutout in picking up the win for Bedrock U. Eric Williams stopped 24 of 26 shots in taking the loss.

This emphatic beatdown is, IMO, confirmation that the Evil Monkeys are back to their old ways and the H0rny Ones are now past their peak. The Apes are just one point out of 1st and the Horns are tied for 6th. Combined with the other results from this weekend, it seems like it is 2014-15 all over again.

Dylan Tait started for the Horns and only stopped 1 of the 4 shots he faced. So Damien Jetlo went in and stopped 46 of 53. Ryan Demharter started for the first time in his two seasons with the Monkeys and stopped 21 of 22 shots. Their usual starter Luke Siemens did not even dress.

The Banjo-Mutts needed the win to stay in 1st place. The Mutts scored 3 goals on 8 1st period shots to build a lead they were able to nurse, despite being outshot 33-11 over the final two periods. MRU starter Colin Cooper was replaced with backup Cam Lanigan to start the 2nd period. One power play in each of the 2nd and 3rd periods allowed the Bluegars to pull close before an empty-netter put it away. Jordon Cooke claimed the win, stopping 40 of 42 shots in the process.

I believe that the Bisons will be quite happy to see that Bedrock U lost this game. It keeps the Dinos behind them. UBC continued their goaltending rotation, and it was Mark Hewitt's turn (he stopped 29 of 31 shots). Bedrock stuck with Steven Stanford (he stopped 18 of 22 shots). UBC built a 3-0 after two periods. Half-way through thr 3rd period the Dinos broke the shutout and then closed the gap to 3-2, but that was as close as they got. UBC heads into the break in 4th place, whilst Bedrock sits tied for 6th.

The Monkeys wrapped up the 1st semester on a roll. Six sraight wins and a jump to 2nd place. Meanwhile, the loss was the H0rny Ones' 4th straight, which followed a 5 game winning streak. In any event, the Horns are tied for 6th. At least they are now done playing the Monkeys. After Friday night's massacre, the Horns started slow, being outshot 16-3 and outscored 201 in the 1st period. The game did not degenerate into a blowout, but still the Apes enjoyed a nice comfortable victory. The Monkeys are the only CW team to play next weekend, as they venture down to Arizona State for two games.

The Evil Monkeys dominated the Hell-Dwellers but, as has been common this year, failed to translate that into domination of the scoreboard. Both games went to a shoot-out, so a split seemed appropriate.

On Friday, ASU lead 3-2 going into the 3rd period. Alberta outshot them 15-4 in the 3rd period. ASU scored with just 14 second left to force OT. Alberta split the game between Siemens and Daigle. Siemens stopped 14 of 16 shots and Daigle stopped 3 of 5 (!) in relief. I guess that's why they are going with Siemens all the way in conference play.

On Saturday it was 2-0 ASU after the 1st. Those 2 goals came on 3 shots. Alberta tied the game and in the end the shots were 43-18, including 19-6 in the 3rd period and 9-0 in OT.

So does this mean that the 2nd semester will be a replay of the 1st?

Tonight is the night. The team tasked with bringing back gold for Canada (or they can stay in Europe and nhang their heads in shame) hits the ice to face a trans-national CIS team. The Bisons have one player named, Jordan DePape, amongst the 6 players reserved for the CW.

The past two seasons the Juniors played Team Big Lemon, drawn from the GTA teams (Ryerson, Toronto, and York). Frankly, those were crap teams. So ra5ther than play a Team GTA yet again, or even a Team OUA, the powers that be allocated one 6-man unit (G-D-D-LW-C-RW) from each of the AUS and CWUAA and 11 players from the OUA.

In past years teams and mixed teams from the CW have compiled a 4-3-0 record against the world juniors. Here are the scores:

Dec. 14, 2004 at Winnipeg: Manitoba
Manitoba Bisons 4, Team Canada 2

Dec. 15, 2004 at Winnipeg:
Team Canada 6, Manitoba Bisons 3

Dec, 15, 2006 at Calgary:

Dec. 15, 2009 at Saskatoon:

Dec. 12, 2012 at Edmonton:

Dec. 13, 2012 at Calgary:

Hopefully the CIS on-line link will be good. I am considering hooking my laptop to the big screen.

I saw this on-line and, as on-line broadcasts go, it was of good quality.

The Jrs. started quickly and had a 2-0 lead. From then on the CIS team looked more organized, although the team only had 30 minutes on the ice ahead of the game.

I don't think the Jrs. would be happy with the large amount of shots (44-32). They seemed to "shoot from everywhere" whereas the U team would set up for a quality shot.

The goaltenders shone in the shoot-out, stopping all but one, the winner by Spencer Abraham.

Sunday's rematch goes at 11:00 a.m. CST (12:00 noon EST) and is scheduled for live broadcast (free!) at [CIS-SIC.tv].

I was unable to see much of this afternoon tilt. However, it is obvious that a big 2nd period paced the Juniors to a win and a series split. There were once again a lot of shots (42-33 for the Juniors).

Overall, the addition of 6 players each from the AUS and CWUAA made the CIS team vastly superior to the Team Big Lemon which played the last two years. However, when you don't have time for a practice I would say that a single team, or a two-team combo, would be even better.

Now we have to wait until after Christmas for the non-conference games:

Is Lakehead going to turn it around in the 2nd half? A sweep of Guelph cannot be taken lightly.

The OUA is now 1-20-0 against the NCAA, with one game left. In contrast, the AUS went 5-7-1 and the CWUAA went 4-8-1.

UOIT seems poised to make a run to the upper echelon of the OUA East. They are just 1 point ahead of Queen's so a one-sided win is a bit of a surprise.

Concordia was blown away by UNB, thus ending a dismal interlock season for the OUA.

Lots of unreported games over the holidays. It leaves me wondering if the games were cancelled.
