On Saturday afternoon the Bisons were much imrpoved over Friday at converting possession and territory into valid scoring chances. After enjoying period leads of 2-0 and 3-0, they built a 6-0 lead before a pair of late goals by the Banjo-Cats spoiled Byron Spriggs' shutout bid.

Around the league, nobody escaped unscathed. All sides picked up least one point. More on that later.

Each side had a slightly altered line-up. For the Bisons, Sean Christensen took Rene Hunter's place on the blueline and Jordyn Boyd replaced Jonah Wasylak up front. The Banjo-Cats replaced Trent Lofthouse with Christian Magnus.

Here's how they lined up:

MANITOBA

Goal:
36 Spriggs (1 Paulic)

Defence:
3 S Christensen - 6 Paulsen
12 Sutherland - 2 Henry
5 L Christensen - 4 Bresciani

Forwards:
25 Merasty - 28 Stovin - 27 DePape
18 Kelly - 21 Brooks - 16 Paradis
24 Augert - 8 Bilton - 22 Boyd
20 Bruyere - 23 Schreyer - 17 Callis

Scratches:
9 Hunter D - 34 Sydora G
15 Stockl - 18 Waldvogel - 29 Wasylak

REGINA

Goal:
31 MacAuley - 1 Kilgore

Defence:
8 Bourhis - 6 McMullen
28 Peel - 4 Sonntag
7 Schneider - 24 Bell

Forwards:
13 Appleyard - 15 Geibel - 22 Hunter
27 Fowlie - 10 Coleshaw - 11 McKinlay
23 Magnus - 16 McPhee - 17 Pereira
9 McCombie - 14 McNulty - 19 King

Scratches:
2 Dech D - 18 Luhning D - 29 Cross D
20 Virtanen F - 21 Hladun F - 12 Lofthouse F
25 Langford F - 30 Desautels G

Jordan DePape opened scoring for the Bisons, then line-mate Brett Stovin added two more as the game wore on. Justin Augert also scored twice. In between Stovin's pair and Augert's pair, Brett Brooks scored unassisted from a turnover.Stovin's 2nd goal was the Herd's 5th, and chased starting goaltender Dawson MacAuley from theHillbilly goal, to be replaced by veteran backup Mitch Kilgore.

Justin Spriggs was well on his way to a shut-out when Dylan McKinlay (who scored the winner on Friday) burst the bubble with less than 5 minutes left. J.J. Coleshaw added another when he rolled one at the net which somehow eluded Spriggs.

The Bisons are off to Calgary next weekend to face the other set of Cougars. Their next home games will be Saturday, October 24th at 7:30 and Sunday, October 25th at 1:00 when the UBC Thunderbirds come to town.

What a turn-around. From 6-5 to 1-0 in 24 hours. Any way you slice it, Bedrock U gets just 1 point at home. They went with last year's #3 goaltender, Myles Hovdebo. Sask stood by Jordon Cooke. The only goal was cored shorthanded by rookie Andrew Johnson.

So who had money riding on the H0rny Ones to win this one? This one went into double overtime, so the Evil Monkeys still get 3 points on the weekend. The game was tied 2-2 after 2, and the shots were pretty close at 26-21 in favour of the Apes. In the 3rd period and overtime, however, Alberta went bananas and outshot Lethbridge 27-10. Dylan Tait saved the day for the Horns, and wound up with 51 saves on the night. Tim Campbell (with his second of the night) scored the winner with just 19 seconds left.

This was yet another close-fought game in the CW. Come to think of it, every game on the weekend was a tight one except for the Saturday Manitoba-Regina game. MRU outshot UBC 30-17. However Matt Hewitt stopped 29 shots to give UBC a chance at victory. Antilla the Hun scored the winner with less than 3 minutes left.

So at the end of one weekend, Saskatchewan and UBC lead the way with 4 points, then come Manitoba and Alberta with 3 points. Next we have last season's cellar-dwellers from Lethbridge and Regina with 2 points each. And bringing up the rear are MRU and Calgary with just one point a-piece.

Wow. I guess any upset of that magnitude can happen if you get hot goaltending.

Speaking of which best of luck to Dylan Tait who overcame testicular cancer this year!

Yes, I posted about the cancer scare last year.

However, goaltending only "stole" the 3rd period and OT on Saturday. The big story is that the first 5 periods of the weekend were pretty even. Friday the shots were 30-26 and an ENG put it away. Saturday after 2 periods it was 2-2 and the shots were 26-21.

Coming in to this game we were hoping for a hard-hitting battle between the CW's two traditionally biggest teams. Not to mention the two top scorers from weekend #1, Matt Brown of MRU and Jordan DePape of Manitoba.

Instead, the Bisons were blitzed. They went with the same lineup to start game @1 against Regina, except that Justin Paulic made his first start in goal. It seems penalties and powerplays were a factor. The Bisons took 4 penalties to MRU's two, and gave up a penalty shot. MRU connected for 3 powerplay and one shorthanded goal in the process.

Colin Cooper got the win in goal, stopping 17 of 18 shots whilst Paulic was tagged with the loss and stopped 31 of 37 shots. Matt Brown scored twice for MRU, and Tyler Fiddler notched a goal and 3 assists.

Each side is now 1-1-1 heading into Saturday's rematch. I suspect that Byron Spriggs will start in goal after being U of M Athlete of the Week last week. The game is on CanadaWest.tv.

Remember back when the H0rny Ones were those lovable losers? They are only off to a 1-2-0 start. However their games have been against the two most highly touted teams in the conference thus far.

Jordon Cooke got the win in goal and Player of the Week Dylan Taite took the loss. Rookie Andrew Johnson scored twice for the Banjo-Mutts.

The Evil Monkeys must have been mad after their loss to Lethbridge and took it out on those poor little Banjo-Cats. The game was tied 2-2 at the first intermission. Then the Apes got serious and outshot their hosts 30-3 and outscored them 4-0 in the 2nd period. Regina tried to match fire-for-fire in the 3rd period. Although the ****s were 18-14, Alberta still scored the onky 3 goals of the period.

Despite the onslaught, Jordan Hickmott was the only Primate to score twice. Luke Siemens git the win in goal, and Mitch Kilgore took the loss. I suspect that Dawson MacAuley will get the start for Regina in Saturday's rematch after having sttolen a win in Manitoba last weekend.

This was more like the type of hockey one would expect from these two teams. The Bisons went with the same line-up as on Friday night except that Byron Spriggs got the start in goal. Colin Cooper got the start for MRU. The Bisons outshot the Blue Haired Cougars 31-27 on the night. Brett Stovin had the Bison goal, his 3rd of the season.

This allows MRU to jump ahead of the Bisons in the standings. They are 20101 and the Bisons are 1-2-1. The Bisons host UBC in a Saturday night/Sunday afternoon series next weekend. Meanwhile, MRU plays a home-and-home with the Evil Monkeys on Friday/Saturday.

Tha Banjo-Mutts have the knack so far of pulling out a victory from a tight battle. This win makes them 4-0-0, with two overtime wins and two more one-goal wins. The H0rny Ones are now 1-2-1 but could just as easily be 4-0-0 themselves.

Of note, Sask tied the game in the final minute of play on a power play goal by Andrew Johnson (his 5th of the season). Once again, Jordon Cooke got the win for Sask and Dylan Tait took the loss.

After an escape with 3 points against Lethbridge, the Evil Monkeys hit the road well-fed with bananas ready to do some damage to the Banjo-Cats. On the weekend the score was 15-3. Alberta is tied for second place at 3-0-1 and Regina is 1-3-0.

Regina once again went with Mitch Kilgore in the net. After he gave up 5 goals in two periods, rookie Andy Desautels saw his first action in the 3rd period. The Apes were taking no chances, once again going with Luke Siemens. Six different Monkeys scored goals, and they outshot their hosts 53-29.

Well, Bedrock U was due for and deserving of a win, and likewise UBC for a loss. So it is fitting that when this one went into a second overtime and 3-on-3, it was the Tweety-Birds who tasted defeat. Still, UBC must be happy wih their 3-0-1 start, hood for a share of second place. The Dinos are in a 3-way logjam with the Bisons and Lethbridge at 1-2-1.

Steven Stanford started his 3rd game of the season for Bedrock, while UBC continued their rotation and went with Eric Williams. Bedrock U had a big edge on the shot clock, 37-24.

The Tweety-Birds will be playing their first game away from British California when they come to town to face the Herd this weekend. Instead of the usual Friday-Saturday series, thisone will go Saturday night-Sunday afternoon. Which works out well since I have Jets tickets on Friday night.

UBC is off to a great 3-0-1 start. However, they could just as easily be 0-4-0. Their games have been nail-biters all the way through.

But what of the Bisons? They have had inconsistent goal scoring. They had an outburst in game 2 at Lakehead and game 2 against Regina, where they scored 6 goals in each game. However, inclusing the pre-season, scored 1 goal in 5 of 10 games, and were shutout once.

Byron Spriggs has done well in net and their top line (Merasty-DePape-Stovin) has been productive. They will need to perform for the Bisons to claim 2 or more points on the weekend.

Both sides are 1-2-1. That is disappointment for Bedrock and yet glorious for the H0rny Ones. Both sides have played Sask and had the same results (a 1-goal loss and an overtime loss). So will the Viagra wear off? Or will Lethbridge turn a corner this season?

When Banjo-Cats meet Banjo-Mutts anything can happen. The age-old canine vs. feline battle fought to the tune of banjo music with generous amounts of moonshine for the spectators. The Mutts are off to a terrific start after having barely edged their Hillbilly neighbours to the south for the CW's final playoff berth a year ago. Let's see how it goes!

Oct 23: Friday Night Recap

With the Bisons' series against UBC not due to start until Saturday at 7:30 p.m., all we have is a very active Friday night from elsewhere across the country. There were three very close battles in the CWUAA, all of which were the debut of a home-and-home series.

For the 5th time in 5 starts, the Banjo-Mutts have claimed a win from a close game. In fact, they were outshot by the Kittens 37-30 on the night. Dawson MacAuley was back in the Regina goal and took the loss. Blake Voth was the winning goalie, in his first start of the season.

The Monkeys raised their University Cup banner and then proceeded to be beaten by the New Kittens on the Block, who were seemingly unimpressed by their hosts. The game turned in the 2nd period. The Apes had a 1-0 lead after the 1st. MRU then dominated the 2nd period, outshooting the Apes 10-4 and outscoring them 2-0. Ultimately an empty netter sealed the deal. Colin Cooper was the winning goalie and Luke Siemens took the loss.

The Bedrock Boys seemed to be well on their way to an easy win. Then in the 2nd intermission a healthy dose of Viagra allowed the H0rny Ones to make a big 3rd period comeback. It fell short, but should give these pesky underdogs some confidence heading into Saturday's rematch at Bedrock U. Both sides switched up their goaltending. Damien Ketlo took the loss in his first start for Lethbridge. Myles Hovdebo got the win in his second start.

WOW. Maybe they were being a little complacent?

With a night game followed by an afternoon game there is not much turn-around time. So just the "bare bones" in this post. The Saturday night opener was mostly evenly played. The problem for the Bisons was turning territory and possession into shots ON goal. They had many more shoits TOWARDS the goal, but the boards and glass behind the UBC net saw much more action than usual.

Here's the alignment:

After losing the opener, the Bisons needed this win. The game was very similar to Friday's in that the Bisons were great at generating scoring chances but often ended by shooting wide or high. However, a slightly different alignment seemed to give them a better and more balanced attack. Shaq Merasty centred his own line with Zach Waldvogel and Jordyn Boyd, all former Portage Terriers. The Terrier line was effective throughout. Although team leader Jordan DePape scored both regulation goals, Merasty set up Adam Henry for his first goal as a Bison in OT. Goaltender Justin Paulic had his first win as a Bison. On the night the Bisons held a 36-28 shots advantage.

Here's the alignment:

MANITOBA

Goal:
1 Paulic (35 Spriggs)

Defence:

U.B.C.

Goal:
30 Hewitt (35 Williams)

Defence:

2 Fafard - 22 Guenther
5 Becker - 6 Underwood

Forwards:
28 Clayton - 10 Bardaro - 17 Vetterl
18 Robinson - 39 Hamilton - 33 Hilton

20 Antilla = 23 Lockhart - 27 Connolly

Scratches:
9 Hayer - 12 Buonassissi - 14 Grewal
29 Wagner - 31 Devji

The win gives the Bisons a record of 2-3-1 and they are alone in 6th place. UBC is now 4-0-2 and are alone in 2nd. The Bisons visit Bedrock U next weekend.

Weekend Photos and Updates

GoBisons.ca has uploaded photos from the weekend.

bisons-151024-stovin.jpg

Brett Stovin, first year player playing on the top line. He has 3 goals and 1 assist and is a +3.

bisons-151025-paulic.jpg

Justin Paulic, the rookie golatender from the WHL had his first home start on Sunday afternoon.

bisons-151025-depape.jpg

The captain, Jordan DePape, has 3 goals and 3 assists, tied for the team scoring lead with Shaq Merasty (0-6-6) and tied for 10th in the league with a handful of others.

And the UBC links for Sunday are now available:

Finally, due to my time constraints on Saturday I never posted links for the out of town games. Here they are:

Regina v Saskatchewan

Links:

LeagueStat: [Summary]

Stories: [UofS] : [rp @CW] : [UofR]

All three other series were on a home-and-home basis. This game was played in Saskatown. Despite the score, Regina was largely in this game. In fact, they outshot the Mutts 38-36. Michael Sofilas scored twice for the Mutts. Jordon Cooke got the win in goal, and Mitch Kilgore suffered the loss. The win gives the Mutts and unexpected 6-0-0 record.

Alberta v Mount Royal

After a loss on home ice in the opener, the Evil Monkeys needed a win. The fact they fot it in overtime takes a bit of the shine off, because MRU picks up 3 points on the weekend. Luke Siemens picked up the win and Colin Cooper took the loss. Cooper kept his team in the game, since they were outshot 34-21.

Lethbridge v Calgary

The H0rny Ones looked impressive in the first two weeks, and maybe they have come back to earth. My;es Hovdebo got the win, and Dylan Tait the loss.

These teams are normally trying to chase down the Evil Monkeys at this time of year. Well, I guess that holds true, but with a twist. The Monkeys are sitting in 3rd and these teams are 5th and 6th. Mr. Slate might have to spring for some big recruits next year. The Dinos lost a paur of top-notch goaltenders and former Bird Steven Spafford seems like a decent backup at best. He has a 3.53 GAA and .866 save%.

The Dinos still have some punch up front, with 4 top 20 scorers (9 Collins, 11 Pearce, 13 Edwards, 16 King). They played an incredible 10 exhibition games this year. Like the Bisons, they had some positive signs but have generally been spinning their wheels.

The Bisons came on nicely in their series with UBC last weekend. I will be interested to see if they keep their shuffled lines. I liked the Terrier line.

This is a home-and-home series. MRU gained a load of credibility with 3 points against the Monkeys last weekend. On the other hand, Lethbridge has faltered after a shocking start. They were swept by Calgary last weekend.

This series is the highlight iof the weekend. The Banjo-Mutts are off to an incredible 6-0-0 start. The Evil Monkeys are 4-1-1 and, with the exception of their mauling of Regina, have looked vulnerable in the early going. Are the Saskies that good? Well, before beating Regina 3-1 and 6-2 last weekend, they won all 4 games by one goal, two of those coming in overtime.

This looks to be a mismatch on paper. #3 vs #32. But I saw these two teams play live and I believe Regina could give UBC a good run for their money.

This was a big win for the Herd. A weak pre-season was followed a spotty start to the regular season. Now they are 3-3-1 and tied with Bedrock U for 5th place, 2 points back of 4th place Alberta. This spoiled the grand re-opening of the Father David Bauer Arena.

The Dinos opened the scoring when leading scorer Chris Collins scored a 1st period PP goal. The lead did not last much more than 2 minutes, at which time Shaq Merasty replied with his own PP goal.

The 2nd period was scoreless, as was the 3rd period for almost 15 minutes. Jordan DePape scored the 3rd PP goal of the night to put the Bisons in the lead. Joel Schreyer scored into an empty net to finish the scoring.

Justin Paulic stopped 29 of 30 shots to claim the win, making his 2nd consecutive start. Myles Hovdebo stopped 20 of 22 shots to take the loss.

Saturday's rematch goes at 2:00 p.m. CDT and is available at CanadaWest.tv.

The Banjo-Mutts move to 7-0 with their 5th one-goal win of the season. The Evil Monkeys came out hurling bananas, outshooting the Mutts 23-8 in the 1st period. But the score was 1-1. They kept it up in the 2nd, outshooting Sask 15-7 and taking a 2-1 lead. I guess that during the intermission the Mutts went outside, sprayed a few fire hydrants, and regrouped for the 3rd. Logan McVeigh scored two 3rd period goals to give the Saskies the W. Jordon Cook stopped 44 of 46 shots for the win, whilst Luke Siemens stopped 22 of 25 shots while taking the loss. Going into Saturday's rematch, the Monkeys sit in 4th place, 5 points behind Sask and only 2 points ahead of Manitoba and Calgary.

This one was a tight battle right down to the controversial ending. The H0rny Ones are showing that while they may not be a playoff team, they are not to be taken lightly. Trailing 3-1 going into the 3rd, they rallied with two 3rd period PP goals to tie the game. With overtime looming, the Horns were penalized with just 28 seconds remaining. As fate would have it, Jordan McNaughton scored for the Bluegars with just 3 seconds left. So not even an overtime point for Lethbridge. Colin Cooper was again in goal for MRU and stopped 24 of 27 shots. Meanwhile, Damien Ketlo took the loss, stopping 29 of 33.

Despite being in last place, the Banjo-Cats are capable of putting up a good fight. And that they did in British California on Friday night. I saw the ending of this one on CanadaWest.tv. For some reason the away team wore white. Although UBC controlled the play more often than not, this was anybody's game until an empty-netter sealed the deal. Matt Hewitt got the win, stopping 16 of 17 shots, and Dawson MacAulay stopped 29 of the 31 shots in taking the loss. The win allows UBC to keep within 2 points of Sask.

A sweep in Bedrock is always tough to get and the Bisons must be pleased. Also, neither game went into overtime so this was a 4-0 road sweep. This result gives the Bisons a 3 game winning streak and a 4-3-1 record. At least temporarily, they are tied with Alberta for 4th place. The Dinos are 3-4-1 in 6th.

This matinee saw the Bisons make a goaltending change, going with Byron Spriggs. He stopped 32 of 34 shots. So the Herd has two goalies going string right now. Bedrock U stuck with Myles Hovdebo, who stopped 18 of 23. Shaq Merasty scored twoce for the Bisons and singles were notched by Kesse Paradis, Liam Bilton, and Brett Stovin.

The Bisons are off to Saudi Alberta where they will face the Monkeys next weekend. On November 13-14 they return to home ice to face the Lethbridge Pronghorns.

With the evening games n progress as I post, part 2 of tonight's report will come later tonight or early Sunday.

Oct 31: Out-of-Town Scoreboard

CW-condensed.jpg

The Bisons played a Saturday matinee and I fell asleep before the late stories and summaries were posted from points west. Hence the split of the report on Saturday's goings on.

Whilst the first month of play has just ended, IMO the fact that the teams have played 8 of their 28 regular season games (29%), means that we are far enough into the season to make some calls as to where our teams generally belong in the pecking order.

Well, here's what happened ...

The first remarkable thing about this result is that it gives the Saskies their first loss of the season after 7 straight wins. The second is that it vaults the Evil Monkeys from 5th to 3rd. The third is that it makes us ask whether this game is an omen of things to come.

That the Monkeys are fighting it out in the middle of the pack should come as a surprise to everybody. However, they continue their practice of dominating the shot clock. In this game, they outshot Sask 20-4 in the 1st period, yet had just a 1-0 lead. The 2nd period was high in shots, 15-14 in favour of the Monkeys, but they cashed in 3 times in taking a 4-1 lead. With Sask in need of a 3rd period rally, they were nevertheless dominated 20-4 on the shot clock. Not a great sign for Sask.

In this game itself, rookie defenceman Jordan Rowley scored 2 goals for the Monkeys, both on the PP. The teams also stuck with their starting goaltenders, Jordon Cooke taking the loss and Luke Siemens claiming the win.

The H0rny Ones are a tough opponent this year as proved in their home leg of this weekend split series. On Friday the game was decided only by a PP goal with 3 second left. Saturday's game was not that close. All the scoring took place in the 1st and 2nd periods. The shots favoured Lethbridge at that point, by a 26-23 margin. Then came a 3rd period that defies normal statistical analysis. The Bluegars fired 27 shots at Dylan Tait in the 2rd period, yet did not score. Lethbridge was clearly just standing around watching their goaltender save the day, since they only had 4 shots of their own. A team can get that from the neutral zone on line changes. MRU is now 4th with 10 points, and Lethbridge is 7th with 5 points.

UBC scored 4 goals on 8 shots in the 2nd period to put this one away. Regina outshot them 35-28 on the night. The Tweety-Birds must have been protected by a little old lady armed with an umbrella willing to smack the Puddy-Tats. Regina went with their 3rd goaltender, Andy Desautels, making his 1st start. He stopped 22 of 28 shots. UBC continued their rotation, going with Eric Williams who stopped 34 of 35 shots. UBC is now tied with Sask for 1st place.

So the Bisons come into the weekend series in Saudi Alberta in 5th place. Well, OK. But they are just 2 points behind the two-time reigning national champions. And the Herd is riding a 3-game winning streak. Now, that sounds a lot better.

Where does that leave the Bisons? A convincing sweep of the Dinos, following a split with UBC, must have confidence riding a wave. Both goaltenders had solid performances last weekend. Will the rotation continue with Paulic going Friday and Spriggs on Saturday? Will the top line of DePape-Stovin-Merasty be used as a unit? Or will Paradis slip in there with Merasty centering his own Terrier line?

And what about those Apes? Yes they are in an unaccustomed 3rd place. But they are first in goals with 29 and tied for first in goals against with 16. They dominate the shot clock every game. They have 5 of the top 20 scorers in the conference.

So what about goaltending? The vet is now Luke Siemens. The backups had some dubious starts in the pre-season, so Siemens has started and finished all 8 regular season games thus far. His numbers are good (1.84 GAA and .927 S%). But it is highly unusual for the Evil Monkeys to ride one goaltender.

IMO the Bisons would be happy coming from Edmontown with 2 points in tow. That would leave them above .500 and they would have played all their away games against the top 3 teams from last season.

Are the Banjo-Mutts for real? I wish we had access to advanced stats. My guess is that, while impressive, the Mutts are not quite as good as their record. They have won 5 games by one goal, and one more by 2 goals. A bounce or a break here or there could obviously have had a dramatic impact on their record. Although MRU had a great weekend against the Bisons, they have otherwise been a so-so team so far. They sit in 4th place, one point ahead of the Bisons and one point behind the Evil Monkeys.

When you are struggling, the Banjo-Cats are the team you want to be playing. And that's the situation in the Town of Bedrock. After being in the nationals last season, and having been the seemingly entrenched #2 team in the conference, the 6th place standing must bother the Bedrock Boys. Is it down to goaltending? The Dinos graduated their top 2 tandem after last season and are going with last year's #3 Myles Hovdebo (2.63 GAA, .868 S%) and UBC transfer Steven Stanford (3.53 GAA, .866 S%). If those numbers hold steady they will have a lot of trouble finishing in the top two.

As for the Cats, I suspect they will have one good game and one dud this weekend. They have enough of a veteran presence that they can be tough. And if rookie goaltender Dawson MacAuley (3.77 GAA, .895 S%) has a good night they could steal games.

This series is a Saturday-Sunday schedule, just like when the Birds visited Friendly Manitoba. The H0rny Ones are no pushover this year. They sit 7th but they have seldom been out of any game so far. Other than a 6-2 loss against Calgary, every game they have played has been decided by either 1 or 2 goals.

Meanwhile, the Tweety-Birds are tied with Sask for 1st place. That really seems strange. While UBC is a solid hockey team, they don't yet strike me as a 1st place team. They are coming off a 6-1 win over Regina. However, in their other 7 games all have been decided by 1 or 2 goals. The foregoing tells me that we should expect some very close games in this set.

Since Iafrate turned 21 in March, I assume his two games with Providence this season makes him ineligible until next fall, correct?

He's still eligible for this season.

You can play Pro after your CHL season ends and into the Fall as a 21 year-old. The deadline is around January 8th (the CIS handbook specifies the exact date). If he plays any pro after that date (as a 21 year-old) you get hit twice (1) 365 days of rest and (2) loss of 1 year of eligibility.

As a 5-year CHL player - he would have a full 5-year degree covered.

If my math is correct wrt the roster cap the only teams that would probably add him this year are Acadia/UNB/STU... I think SMU has one spot but Stephen Johnston hasn't played yet. I think PEI/X/Dal are maxed out already.

All I saw of this on CanadaWest.tv was most of the 3rd period and overtime. Good thing I nevefr had to suffer through two periods of watching the Evil Monkeys outshoot the Bisons 31-7. But since it was only 1-0, all was good. I missed seeing a goal by Kruise Reddick and a bunch of saves by Justin Paulic.

What I saw was a 3rd period where the Bisons throttled the Bears with a well-pklayed road game. However, Jamie Crooks gave the Monkeys a 2-0 lead on a scramble followed by a screen shot. The Bisons were not done. Monkey Jayden Hart took 4 minutes for spearing and on the ensuing powerplay Shaq Merasty scored with just over 6 minutes left. Then with Paulic on the bench, Merasty notched his 5th of the season to force overtime.

In the first overtime period (4-on-4) the play was back and forth with each goaltender making game-saving saves. However, the second overtime (3-on-3) was all Primate. A goal seemed inevitable and Crooks scored his 2nd of the night to bring victory to Saudi Alberta.

Luke Siemens got the win with 17 saves on 19 shots, and Paulic took the loss despite 42 saves. Siemens has now started all 9 regular season games for the Monkeys.

The point lifts the Bisons into a 4th place tie with MRU at 4-3-2. The Monkeys are 3rd at 6-2-1.

Saturday's rematch goes at 6:00 MST, 7:00 CST.

Bedrock U needed a win and the Banjo-Cats were the perfect victim. Steven Stanford returned to the Dino goal and racked up a 17 save shutout, At the other end, Dawson MacAuley was peppered with 39 shots. Bedrock had 5 different goal-scorers. The Dinos are now 6th with 9 points, one behind Manitoba and Mount Royal.

Yet another one-goal win for the Banjo-Mutts. This time they were outshot 36-24. How long can they keep this up? Maybe all season, like last year's Calgary Flames. Jordon Cooke once again got the win for Sask, and Colin Cooper took the loss for MRU. Sask is now in 1st place at 8-1-0, and MRU is tied for 4th with Manitoba at 4-3-2.

So the Herd make it a 3-point weekend in the Land of Monkeys! I was at a banquet and missed watching this one on-line. The UofA game story gives a nice recap.

The Bisons continued their rotation in goal. Byron Spriggs stopped 43 of the 45 shots he faced. Brett Brooks scored twice the 1st period to give the Bisons a 2-1 lead. There was no scoring in the 2nd period. Nor was there any scoring for almost 18 minutes in the 3rd. Rhett Rachinski scored his 5th of the season and it looked like the game would be headed to overtime. Then with just 12 second left, Jordan DePape scored his 5th of the season and there was no point for the Monkeys.

The Bisons are now 5-3-2 and are alone in 4th, one point behind Alberta (6-3-1) and 2 points behind UBC.

After two weekends on the road, the Bisons return home to face the Lethnridge Pronghorns next Friday at 7:00 and Saturday at 1:00.

The Banjo-Cats needed a win to avoid falling completely oit of contention. Even with this OTW they are 6 points in arrears of a playoff berth. The Cats are now 2-8-0, both wins coming in overtime. The Dinos fall to 4-4-2, even with MRU in 5th place.

Mitch Kilgore played perhaps the best game in his career as a Kitten, stopping 46 of 48 shots. Steven Stanford started his 2nd in a row and took the loss, stopping 23 of 26 shots.

The Banjo-Mutts have mastered the art of winning games where they have been outshot. On Saturday at Mount Royal they were outshot 33-24. Jordon Cooke stopped 32 of those 33 shots, whilst MRU backup Cam Lanigan stopped 20 of the 23 shots he faced in his start, the final goal being scored into an empty net. The Saskies are sitting 1st at 9-1-0 and MRU is tied for 5th with Calgary at 4-4-2. Next week the Mutts host UBC in a battle for 1st place.

This was UBC's first regulation loss of the season, and it demonstrates that the H0rny Ones are no longer the pushovers they were. While a 3-5-1 record and a 7th place standing may not make other teams dance for joy, the fact is their results this year have been a massive step forward.

In the game itself, UBC held a 1-0 lead entering the 3rd period. Lethbridge managed a 3 goal outburst, with the winner coming within the final 3 minutes. Dylan Tait was back in goal for Lethbridge and stopped 27 of 29 shots. Meanwhile, Matt Hewitt took the loss for the Birds, and stopped 34 of 37 shots in the process.

Next week both sides hit the road, UBC playing at Sask and Lethbridge coming to Manitoba.
