:blues are very proud to select, from USNTDP, JT Compher.

We're thrilled to add such a talented young player to our organization. We feel like JT's game translates well to our hockey club, as he'll be able to learn from veterans David Backes and TJ Oshie who play the same kind of game.

With the 51st overall pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, the Toronto Maple Leafs are proud to select John Hayden from the United States Development Program

HaydenJohn1.jpg

McKenzie: No surprises here, folks. This kid was a riser throughout the season after returning from an injury that he sustained earlier this year. Hayden was a large contributor offensively and physically for the United States' U18 team, which helped lead the team to a Silver medal. We've seen the Toronto Maple Leafs favor the United States Development Program before, and with a need upfront of both size and offensive prowess, John Hayden is an ideal pick here for Dave Nonis and his staff.

Round 1 (21st overall): Morgan Klimchuk (C)
Round 2 (51st overall): John Hayden (C)

From the Quebec Remparts, Anthony Duclair

View attachment 65335

Duclair possess one of the best skating strides in the entire 2013 draft class. The first thing that jumps out about him is the high speed he plays at. He consistently beats defensemen out wide. His acceleration is very impressive and he gets to his top speed very quickly. He’s incredibly agile and a very shifty skater. He has very impressive puck skills considering he’s constantly at high speeds. Duclair has the puck on a string at times, and can make defensemen and goalies alike look silly. He’s very creative with the puck on his stick and is incredibly dangerous 1-on-1 or on a breakaway. His shot is accurate and comes off with a good release. He has the ability to make crisp, accurate passes and find open teammates but is considered more of a finisher.

:stars select D Jan Kostalek from Rimouski of the QMJHL.

sfp_2926_jan_kostalek.jpg

Solid all-round dman who impressed in his rookie season, being named to the QMJHL all-rookie team. Great puck poise. Like the rest of the Oceanic was disappointing in their first round playoff loss to gatineau. Needs to add size this summer to continue his progression, but will take on a larger role on a rimouski contender next season. Projects to be an all-round 2nd pairing guy in the NHL if all goes well.

Jarry-was-his-teams-player-of-the-game-in-the-CHL-Top-Prospects-Game-last-month-The-Canadian-Press.jpg

Pictured: Edmonton Oil Kings goaltender Tristan Jarry can't hold back his joy at hearing that he wouldn't have to play in the frozen, frostbitten, godforsaken desolate wasteland of California.

McKenzie: This should come as a surprise to nobody. Edmonton has had more chances than most to watch Jarry, since he played in their backyard with the Oil Kings. Jarry is a technically sound goalie, but not one who will avoid highlight saves, either. He's a big guy, and combined with his obvious desire to win, the Oilers have an eventual successor to Devan Dubnyk. The Oilers will monitor his development carefully next year, where he'll be getting the bulk of the starts for the Oil Kings.

Edmonton Oilers 2013 entry draft:
1st round (7th overall: ) LW Valeri Nichushkin
2nd round (37th overall: ) D Robert Hägg
2nd round (56th overall: ) G Tristan Jarry

Los Angeles is now on the clock.

The Boston Bruins are proud to select, from the US National Development Team, KEATON THOMPSON.

Keaton+Thompson+USA+Hockey+Top+Prospects+Practice+Gdm93ClRMvnl.jpg

McKenzie: This is an interesting pick. Thompson is a September 14 birthday, which means he just barely made the cut for this year's draft. He's the youngest guy in the entire draft, and was a day away from being 2014 eligible, so Boston is investing in a bit of a long-term pick here. Scouts agree that he will probably become a very good two-way defenceman in the NHL, but I think with the prevalence of close-to-NHL ready players in this draft, Thompson might have slid a bit because of his age. Boston got a great value pick here.

Viktor is a very talented forward who displays significant upside on his best nights. Overall, he shows an advanced understanding of the game, evident in his quick decisions. He has impressive puck possession skills to go along with his good speed.

Poile: With our 3rd round selection, the Nashville Predators are proud to select, from the US National Development Program, HUDSON FASCHING.

HudsonFasching.jpg

McKenzie: Hudson Fashing, here's a guy whose draft stock took quite the tumble over the year. His name was in discussion as being a potential 1st round guy last summer, and his mid-season projection had him as an early 2nd rounder. He's big, strong... he's got the perfect body and playing style to become a very good power forward in the NHL. Think Andrew Ladd, and that's a good comparable to where this kid can get to with the right coaching & development. His two way game is already very well developed. He's got great puck skills in close, with a deadly wrister. Nashville are going to have to wait on this kid however, as while he has all the tools to become a deadly player in the NHL, he still needs a lot of development. He's probably 3 years away. Long term prospect, but Nashville are clearly enamored with his ceiling, which is very, very high. One of the bigger "Boom-or-Bust" players left in the draft, and now he's a Predator.

Sather: With our 3rd round selection the New York Rangers are proud to select, from Grand Rapids Minnesota, Avery Peterson.

Avery-Peterson.jpg

Info: One of the top Minnesota prospects he is a smart centre-forward who plays a strong two-way game. He plays as strong passing centre with a power game and three zone responsibility, and could also project to the wing. Has a frame with room to fill out into, and already plays physical. at his present size. Strong on the wall with a really nice shot. If his hands improve, so will his chances to advance up the ladder.

:stars select C Vincent Dunn from Val D'Or (traded to gatineau in the offseason for two 1st round picks)

small but plays big, scores, fights, etc. Potential 2nd or 3rd line center. Was ranked a mid 2nd but then fell after being moved to wing and having his scoring come way down after a hot first half. Might be a racist.
