With the #1 overall selection in the 2013 NHL Draft, the Colorado Avalanche are proud to select defenseman Seth Jones of the Portland Winterhawks.

video-hockey-jones-articleLarge.jpg

:handclap::handclap::jump::handclap::handclap:

What says you Mr. GM? Why no Mac?

sherman-greg_220.jpg

"We had Nathan and Seth rated fairly evenly as prospects but given the incredible upside that comes with an athlete of Seth Jones's ability and character, we felt this was the right decision for our franchise moving forward."

Did Jones's familiarity with the Colorado franchise of years past have anything to do with the decision?

"Not terribly no, but it certainly doesn't hurt. We know the kind of young man we're getting, what kind of quality background he comes from his father being a solid NBA player in our city for many years but the bottom line is we thought he was the better player for us on the ice."

Dat's dat.

First of all we would like to thank the New Jersey Devils for the great hospitality and without further ado,
With the Number 2 Overall Selection the Florida Panthers are extremely excited to pick from the Halifax Mooseheads Nathan MacKinnon.
Nathan-MacKinnon-scored-three-goals-and-one-assist-against-the-Portland-Winterhawks..jpg

We are glad Mackinnon fell right into our lap, and will be a Panther for a long time. Its too bad we couldn't get a his friend and teammate Drouin but we couldnt find a trade that would work for both parties.
Thanks, we will see you in the second round.

Congratulations Nate, Welcome to the NHL :D

Stevie Y: "The Tampa Bay Lightning are extremely happy and proud to select, the third overall in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, from the Halifax Mooseheads of the QMJHL, Jonathan Drouin.

"This is definitely a historic moment for our franchise. We felt like we got an extremely talented player of his calibre, and it won't be too long before we get to see him in the NHL, so we're very excited.

James Duthie: "and here we go ...David Poile & the Nashville entourage are making their way to the front stage, to announce who will be the newest member of the Nashville Predators"

Bob McKenzie: "Nashville is going to go one of two ways here: the smart money is on Barkov, but don't count out Poile taking a defenceman here. They've historically built their teams through the draft, and they are known for building from the blueline. Darnell Nurse is your darkhorse pick here"

Duthie: "That's right, Bob. Nashville has a very good scouting department, and if they think that a player like Nurse is the best guy going forward, you have to trust that they've done their homework about..."

Pierre McGuire: "IF I'M DAVID POILE RIGHT NOW, I'M LOOKING AT SEAN MONAHAN. HE'S GROWN UP ON NORTH AMERICAN ICE, HE'S BIG, TALENTED, AND CAN SCORE. HE'S A LEADER... HE'S WHAT THE PREDATORS DESPERATELY NEED, BOB! HE'S A MONSTER!"

(Poile moves to the podium)

David Poile: "We'd like to take this opportunity to first congratulate the Stanley Cup winners, the Boston Bruins, on a great season played".
(faint boos from the crowd)
... "and thank the great fans in New Jersey for hosting such a great draft"
(louder cheers)

Poile: "The Nashville Predators are proud to select... from Tappara, Finland: Alexander Barkov"

aleksander_barkov_tappara.jpg

Duthie: "Alexander Barkov, the newest member of the Nashville Predators. Your thoughts, Bob?"

McKenzie: "He's a big, skilled center. Dad was Russian who played in the Finnish league, and they settled in Finland, so you don't have to worry about the "Russian Factor". He can be a goal scorer, he can be a play maker, and he's mobile. Nashville has Fisher and Legwand up the middle right now, so you know that there are character guys that will show Barkov how to play center in the NHL. A lot of people saw him as a late riser in this draft, that he might be able to slip into the top 3 in this draft, but you have to assume that Poile is thrilled to be able to bring in this kind of skill into the organization. People have compared him to a young Joe Thornton in style, and he..."

McGuire: "THAT'S RIGHT, BOB! "IF I'M DAVID POILE RIGHT NOW, I'M THRILLED ABOUT BRINGING IN A KID LIKE BARKOV: HE'S CAN ADAPT TO NORTH AMERICAN ICE, HE'S BIG, TALENTED, AND CAN SCORE. HE'S A LEADER... HE'S WHAT THE PREDATORS DESPERATELY NEED, BOB! HE'S A MONSTER!"

With the 5th overall selection, the Carolina Hurricanes select from Brynas.. Elias Lindholm

We feel that this pick gives us a complete player who can one day step in and be a top 6 forward for the Carolina Hurricanes who can use some more offensive depth.

"Sean will be the best player to be selected in the 2013 draft"- Jay Feaster

Top 5 talent. Character and intangibles. Top end offensive ability, elite defensive ability and off the charts hockey IQ. He can slow down a game and control it. He makes everyone around him better.

Monahan will be playing in the NHL in this fall.

A camera remains trained on the Oilers' draft table as the picks begin pouring out. As Drouin, Mackinnon and Jones go off the board, GM Craig MacTavish remains neutral, double- and triple-checking his team's draft boards. He has three scenarios in mind: a dream scenario, a plan B and a plan C. This is foolproof.

Alexander Barkov goes next. A bit disappointing to MacTavish, as his dream scenario slipped through his fingers. It wasn't surprising, though -- nobody truthfully expected Barkov to be on the board at seven, anyways.

But then another dagger hit: Lindholm was stripped from the available players list. Cameras show MacTavish frown, mutter something half-hearted to a scout, and cross another name off his list. TSN cameras reveal that the list only carries one more name with the "top-5" designation next to it.

And then, disaster strikes. With MacTavish looking in in equal parts rage, frustration and severe disappointment, Calgary drafts Monahan. MacTavish shouts something that even a deaf person could hear, and no, it isn't a prayer. MacTavish snarls, strikes a name off his list so hard that his pen punctures the paper, and wanders over to the fan area where the mascots are dancing.

ajiH8cW.jpg

He returns after a few seconds, looks at his head scout in a frantic "what now?" kind of way. Ever since Lindholm was snatched up, Edmonton had been working the phones in an attempt to deal the pick, but none of the offers were satisfactory. Everybody wanted one of their top players and kept insisting, no matter how many times MacTavish explained the math, that the cap wouldn't allow Edmonton to keep them all anyways.

The camera catches one more tactical F-bomb from MacTavish before reverting back to the panel.

Duthie: There you have it. Oilers GM Craig MacTavish is not pleased, but it looks like he'll be making Edmonton's pick shortly.

McKenzie: Edmonton was very high on Sean Monahan from the get-go. Seeing him go must be heart-breaking, especially considering that he addressed both a skillset and a position of need for them.

Duthie: And to a division rival, no less. Craig MacTavish coming up to the podium with the pick.

f2a90611474d90afdd4a82a1e586.jpg

MacTavish: Hello everyone. The Edmonton Oilers would first like to apologize again for crashing the podium during Colorado's first overall pick. It's become a bit of an ingrained routine for us. It won't happen again. Until next year.

We would also like to congratulate the Chicago Blackhawks on an excellent season, capped by their second Stanley Cup in four years. Also, hello to Oilers fans watching at the official draft day viewing party at Rexall Place, and to all of you here at the Prudential Center today.

With the seventh overall pick of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, the Oilers are pleased to select, from Traktor Chelyabinsk of the KHL, Valeri Nichushkin.

3FSgw4j.png

McGuire: Get excited, Oilers fans! This kid is incredible! He's a big body who keeps an active stick at all times! If you're not already in love with this pick you're deluded! I can't believe he slipped under the radar!

McKenzie: You had him projected to go seventh overall, Pierre.

McGuire: ...

McKenzie: ...

McGuire: MONSTER!

The Oilers draft Valeri Nichushkin. Going into the draft, we placed emphasis on two important aspects: size up front, and centermen. We were really hoping to have one of Lindholm or Monahan available to us, but with both gone we had a decision to make. There are a few players later in the round we love, but at this point in the draft it wouldn't be wise to reach for a player who may not end up as talented as the winger Nichushkin. We're looking forward to watching Nichushkin bump, grind and hit everything along the way en route to becoming a power forward who can easily rotate with anyone in our top-six.

Buffalo is on the clock.

Lou: thank you all for coming to the 51'st entry draft right here in New Jersey. We hope you all enjoy your self in the city and have a good time. The new Jersey Devils would like to congratulate the Pittsburgh Penguins on their Stanley cup win.

I would now like to call some very special people that have a special place in my and all of Jerseys heart to announce our Selection.

CAST of Jersey Shore : Sorry bro we're about to go get tans , hit the gym and chill on the beach.

Lou: alright then.....

for the 9th overall pick in the 2013 NHL draft the New Jersey Devils Select Bo Horvat of the London Knights.

Pierre McGuire: this Kid is a tremendous talent, I've had the pleasure of watching him many times and i can say he is the whole package, Bo has real top end Defensive talent, and above average offensive talent, he's a playoff performer and battles his heart out every game. he skates rather well but will have to add some explosiveness to his stride if he wants to become a real top 6 player. he gets in the gritty area's and wins battles. i really think this was a great pick considering the lack of top 6 upside centers the Devils currently have.

I really like that the devils are building from the middle out, However I'm suprised that they passed on a talent like Shinkurak given the lack of depth the organization has at wing.

YOW
Duthie : And here comes rookie GM Jim Nill for his first ever draft pick.
McKenzie : I had a long talk with Kenny Holland yesterday, and he's real happy for Jim. Pissed off, but happy. Dallas is lucky to have him.
McGuire :Completely agree Bob. This guy played his junior in Medicine Hat before representing Canada at the Lake Placid Olympics. After that he bounced around the NHL for a decade before settling in to a managment role under the tutelage of Jimmy D and Kenny Holland. Hanna, Alberta, you should be proud because he's going to be a MONSTER.

jim-nill-2010.jpg

I'd like to thank the NJ devils for their hospitality, and congradulate my good friend and fellow moustachioed man Paul MacLean on his first Jack Adams trophy.
p16158557dt.jpg

Also, we know it's not St. Patty's day. These are our new jerseys. Really.

With the 10th overall pick in the 2013 NHL draft, from the Sault St.Marie Greyhounds of the OHL, the Dallas Stars select D Darnell Nurse

darnell-Nurse.jpeg

Bob Mckenzie : Pierre, i'm surprised he fell this far. He's the second best dman in this draft, and just an all-round stud. Prototypical #1 Dman, he can score, he can pass, he can skate, and well, his physical game...
Pierre : HE'S A MONSTER!!!!!

Duthie: Well here are the Flyers, what are they going to do Bob?

McKenzie: Well the Flyers are very dissapointed that Nurse goes one spot before them, they had him ranked in their top 5 and envisioned him as the next Chris Pronger. Fucale is a bit of a darkhorse here given the Flyers troubles in net.

Duthie: I think Bryzgalov is currently heading to the Russian space station next week.

Holmgren: The Phyladelphia Flyers are proud to select, from Rimouski (QMJHL), Samuel Morin!

McKenzie: WOW! A bit of a suprise here, but Morin was a late riser.

McGuire: At 6'7, the Flyers think they have drafted the next Chara, and James he is a MONSTER!!!!

McKenzie: Certainly a boom or bust pick for the Flyers here, plenty of big defenceman have been drafted before hoping to be the next Chara and have failed. Even Tyler Myers had a poor season this year.

McGuire: Just got a text from a Flyers scout who told me that after Nurse went, the Flyers were down to Morin, Shinkaruk and Zadarov but went with Morin because he is a MONSTER! Oh and James tomorrow I have lunch with Mark Recchi but you're not invited.

Duthie: Go back to NBC Pierre.

The Flyers organization is very excited to add Morin to our team. We love his compete level and is shutdown abilities. We think he skates very well for player of his size, he is underrated offensively and we envision him as hopefully our replacement for Chris Pronger in the near future.

First off, we'd like to thank New Jersey for their hospitality, and for hosting the draft. We'd also like to congratulate the Los Angeles Kings for repeating as Cup Champs (ok, being a little optimistic ;)). Alright, let's announce our pick.

The Phoenix Coyotes are proud to select, from the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League, Kerby Rychel!

images

Kerby-Rychel1-e1348361423496.jpg

Kerby is one of the purest goal scorers in this draft. He has grown into a very solid player for the Spitfires, and is used in almost all situations. He has shown, like his dad Warren, that he can also be a physical force. We are proud to add Kerby to our organization.

With the 13th overall pick the Winnipeg Jets are proud to select from Djurgarden

Alexander Wennberg

Alexander-Wennberg.jpg

The Winnipeg Jets organization believe we have drafted quite the special player. An excellent skater with a high compete level, we love the fact Alex can play any forward position. He's so skilled and versatile that going forward he has a place in our NHL lineup and any forward spot within it.

Mckenzie: Alex really is the perfect player for Winnipeg going forward. Their young core is really starting to be defined but lack a top quality versatile forward and overall depth but Alex seems to fit that need to a T. He's going to be an NHL player and a good one at that.

McGuire: Yeah.... MONSTER (am I doing this right hehe)

Onto the next one!!

"Without further adieu New York Islanders select with the 15th overall selection in the 2013 NHL entry draft........

Hunter Shinkaruk"

Shinkaruk.jpg

SNOW: We couldn't believe that Shinkaruk dropped down to us and we thought of the pick to be a no-brainer. To get a guy with the skill and ability to create offense like Shinkaruk bodes extremely well for our future. We have high hopes for him and we know he will bring exceptional offense alongside Strome and Tavares for years to come making us a threat in the high-scoring East. The future looks well with Shinkaruk apart of this team."

Bob Mac: Shinkaruk fell farther than people would have thought but what a great pickup by NYI. They are already deep in C with Tavares and Strome coming up, Shinkaruk will only make them more lethal down the middle.

MCGUIRE: I THOUGHT THEY'D TAKE ZADOROV HERE TO SHORE UP THE D BUT SHINKARUK IS AN AMAZING PICK, WHAT A MONSTER ALONGSIDE THE LIKES OF TAVARES AND STROME, HE PLAYS C BUT HE HAS THE ABILITY TO CONVERT TO WING. HE WAS A MONSTER IN THE SUBWAY SERIES!

Ken Holland: First, I'd like to thank the fans of the Detroit Red Wings for supporting us on another successful season. I'd also like to extend my gratitude to the wonderful state of New Jersey for their excellent hospitality. *pause*. With the 18th overall pick, the Detroit Red Wings are proud to select, from the Edmonton Oil Kings, CURTIS LAZAR!

lazar1.jpg

-

Bob Mackenzie: I don't like this pick. It's too far of a stretch, and I don't think that Detroit fans are going to be happy about this. There are many great player still up on the board, why Lazar?

Pierre: I couldn't disagree more Bob, I think this is a fantastic pick. It fills Detroit's depth need at centre , and allows for more depth in the Red Wing organization. And you can never have too much depth at centre.

Bob Mackenzie: I just don't think he fits your stereotypical "Red Wings" style of play. He sometimes struggles with the puck, doesn't display a great amount of talent, and he tends be streaky.

Pierre: Again, I couldn't disagree with you more. I met Curtis Lazar's father in Keene, Ontario when Curtis was only 11 years old. It was at a Atom level hockey tournament, and even at that age, you could just see the skill ooze out of this young kid. A phenomenal pick by the Red Wings organization. Bravo Detroit!

Bob Mackenzie: I suppose we'll just have to disagree then, Pierre.

Pierre: *quietly* Monster pick...

-

Ken Holland: The Detroit Red Wings organization believes this to be an excellent pick. Lazar is known to be a goal scorer; the Red Wings could use someone in our system who's main priority it is to score. To top it off he's physical, he's quick, and he's got a quick, solid release. He's responsible defensively, and he can score. At 6 feet fall, 190 pounds, we believe Lazar has the potential to be a big, solid, 2-way Centre with a scoring tough.

Ryan Hartman
Age – 18
Position – Center/Left Wing
Height – 5′ 11″
Weight – 190
Draft Projection: 20-25th overall
OHL Team: Plymouth Whalers
2013 Regular Season Stats: 23 goals, 37 assists, 60 points, +29, 120PIM, 56 games played
2013 Playoff Stats: four goals, two assists, six points, 16PIM, nine games played
NHL Comparable(s) – Scott Laughton, Ryan Callahan
Upside – 7.5/10

Strengths – Ryan Hartman is an in your face forward who never takes a shift off. He’s not the biggest of players in terms of size, but he has the heart of a lion and won’t back down from anyone. He’s versatile as he can play the wing and is also a good centerman. Hartman can play in all situations and will not only shut down the opposition’s top players, but he can also produce offense against them, too. He is a solid skater, is very smart and his hockey IQ is through the roof. He plays as hard in the defensive zone as he does in the offensive zone, always finishes his checks, isn’t afraid to drop the mitts and will do whatever it takes to win. Hartman has a solid shot, sees the ice pretty well and overall is one of the more complete players in this year’s draft class.
