SFU hosts TWU for the first time this season on November 23rd at Bill Copeland Arena. Both teams faced off against each other once during the pre-season where SFU won 4-0 with the help of Rookie Josh Mckissock, former Captain of the Fernie Ghostriders, who tallied 2 points in the game.

So far, SFU has been playing very strong and are currently sitting on top of the BCIHL standings with a 5-0 record. The 5-0 record didn't come easy as they had to face tough opponents like Selkirk college, last year's BCIHL Champions.

TWU will look to lean on former Powell River King (BCHL) Rookie JP Villeneuve for some offense as leads all TWU skaters with 9 points over just 7 games. However, SFU also has two players in the top 10 of the BCIHL scoring race with one having 14 points and the other having 12 in just 5 regular season games.

Jono Ceci and Nick Sandor have been the offensive catalysts for the SFU Men’s Hockey team this season, and it was no different on Saturday.

Despite an injury-riddled roster, the SFU Clan cruised to their seventh win of the season Saturday night at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre, defeating the Trinity Western Spartans by a score of 7-1.

Jono Ceci led the way with two goals and a helper, while Nick Sandor collected three assists in the win. The Clan outshot the Spartans 32-20.

Andrew Parent made his fourth start of the season for the Clan, turning away all but one of the 20 shots he faced Saturday evening.
Harry Fredeman made the start for TWU, but was chased by the Clan late in the second period after giving up five goals on 23 shots. Silas Matthys made seven saves on nine shots as his replacement.

With their win on Saturday, the SFU Clan advance to 7-1-0 on the year. Their only loss came in their last game prior to Saturday, a 9-5 defeat at the hands of Selkirk College on November 16th.

The Clan’s ability to rebound was something head coach Mark Coletta could appreciate. “Anytime you lose, it’s always good to come back with a win. A solid all-around good effort from the teamâ€.

The Clan also got goals from Yan Kalashnikov, Josh Mckissock, Aaron Enns, Colton Schock, and Mike Ball on Saturday. Graham Smerek contributed with two assists.

McKissock’s goal was the go-ahead goal late in the first period. It came on a penalty shot after each team had exchanged goals earlier in the frame.

After the first period, the Clan would run away with the game, scoring five unanswered goals to bring the crowd to their feet.

Jono Ceci scored his seventh and eighth goal of the season in the win, while Sandor’s three assists put his point total at 19 on the year.

“We knew going into the season, these two were going to have to be big time players. They are going to garner a lot of ice time and are responsible at both ends of the ice,†said Coletta.

Both teams’ power-plays failed to make a difference on Saturday. SFU and TWU both went 0-3 on the evening.

With the loss, Trinity Western falls to 5-7 on the season.
The lone TWU goal was scored by Joey Walter, as the team’s leading scorer JP Villeneuve was held off the scoresheet for only the second time this season.

The teams meet each other again Thursday November 28th, and Coletta knows Villeneuve is always somebody to watch out for.

“I think we just have to stick to our game plan and keep playing with confidence. We have to make sure we find a way to shut down Villeneuve. He is a very dangerous player out there.â€

As mentioned, the Clan played the game with injures to a few key players. They played Saturday without Trevor Milner, Jared Eng, Mike Sandor, and Kale Wild.

The team continues regular season play with a rematch at TWU on Thursday before heading back home for Saturday’s match against UVIC, a team that has one win and is currently last in league standings.

The Clan continues to prepare for the 2014 Great Northwest Showcase, taking place January 3rd and 4th at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre.

Gotta love The Clown. I checked out the BCIHL standings:
http://www.bcihl.ca/leagues/print_standings.cfm?leagueID=11139&clientID=3692&divID=0

The Clown have only played 8 conference games. What the heck gives? The rest have played 11-13 games.

UVic is only 1-10. That has to concern them. They won this league not so long ago.

I root for Selkirk College, the only college team left in this. After being a cellar-dweller year after year they came on to win it all last year.

When The Clown play the UND Peaceable Farmers maybe the whole Clown team could pile out of a Volkswagon. That would be sure to delight the crowd and would get UND thinking. UND's lack of a nickname is definitely their weak spot.

Hollywood: You provide a great service for this board but it would be nice if you stopped acting like the name calling nerdy kid from grade 7.

The Simon Fraser University Men’s Hockey team had one goal in mind as they took to the ice this past weekend at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre, to head into the Christmas break as the best team in the BCIHL. The Clan made that goal a reality, winning back-to-back games against Eastern Washington University, and are now set to face off against two powerhouse NCAA Division 1 programs traveling to Burnaby in the New Year.

After dropping a 5-0 deficit to the University of Victoria Vikes two weeks ago, the team knew they had to get their game back on track before closing out the first half of the season. Powered by a dominating performance from offensive catalyst Nick Sandor, SFU rebounded with two back-to-back decisive wins over EWU, propelling them to overtake Selkirk College as the top team in the BCIHL.

“The goal at the beginning of the year was to be going into the break in first place. We still have things to work on, but we are very happy with where we are at,†said SFU coach Mark Coletta.

The Clan took down the Eagles 5-2 on Friday night, then skated to a dominant 7-0 win on Saturday, out-shooting their opponent 55-19.

Saturday’s game also marked the annual Teddy Bear Toss, in support of the Burnaby and Surrey Christmas Bureaus. Hundreds of teddy bears showered the ice at the 4:33 of the first period when SFU forward Aaron Enns potted his eighth of the year putting the Clan up 1-0. The Bureaus also raised over $400 in donations at the game.

The back-to-back games closed out the first half of the season for both teams as the Clan will head into the break with a 10-2-0 record. With the two losses this past weekend, the Eagles fall to 4-9-1 on the season. Nick Sandor complied a whopping eight points over the two games for SFU, earning him the praise of coach Mark Coletta.

“He has played very well. He has come in with a new attitude and has great leadership qualities. He has terrific skill and he showed it this weekend.â€

With the eight points he recorded this weekend, Sandor now becomes the top scorer in the BCIHL with 30 points in 12 games. After registering five points this weekend, his linemate Jono Ceci now has 28 points on the season, good for third overall in the league. Sandor and Ceci led the charge both nights, but that isn’t to say the Clan didn’t get any scoring from their other offensive talents.

While Nick Sandor registered four points and Jono Ceci collected a goal and an assist in the first game on Friday, the Clan also got two point performances from Aaron Enns and Josh McKissock. Jesse Williamson also potted his first ever career BCIHL goal in the 5-2 victory.

Andrew Parent started in goal Friday for the Clan, turning away all but two of the 34 shots he faced. Derick Moser got the call in goal for the Eagles in Friday’s game, surrendering five goals on 30 shots.

Eagles’ defenseman Zack Maxwell registered a goal and an assist for the Eagles while Jake Flynn also collected a goal and added a helper. The team’s leading scorer Uriah Machuga was held to only one assist on Friday and actually left Saturday’s game after taking a tough body-check from SFU defenseman Colton Shock.

Both team’s power plays struggled in the first game. The Clan went one for seven while EWU was one for 11 on the night. Both teams’ swapped goalies for Saturday’s game. Graeme Gordon made the start for the Clan while BJ Leach made only his second start of the season for the Eagles.

Nick Sandor put up another four point night on Saturday (1 G 3A) while Jono Ceci scored twice and added an assist. Aaron Enns also helped lead the charge offensively, potting a goal and adding two assists in Saturday’s win. With his five points this weekend, Enns now sits eighth in league scoring with 20 points in his first year with SFU. The Clan also got goals from Graham Smerek, Pavlo Zerebecky, and Jesse Mysiorek. Defensemen Mike Ball and Jared Eng each had two assists in Saturday’s win.

Graeme Gordon stopped all 19 shots he faced for his second shutout of the season, while BJ Leach made 48 saves on 55 shots for the Eagles.

With the two games this past weekend, the first half of the BCIHL season has officially come to a close. The Clan’s next regular season game is Saturday January 11th against Thompson River’s University.

First, however, SFU will face off against NCAA Division 1 powerhouse teams University of North Dakota, and Princeton University for the second annual Great Northwest Showcase. The teams travel to Burnaby on January 3rd and 4th to face off against SFU and UBC at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre.

UND, with alumni such as Jonathan Toews, Ed Belfour, Zach Parise, and Travis Zajac, boast a current roster with 15 players currently drafted in the NHL. Princeton, home of legendary college hockey great Hobey Baker, will represent the Ivy League in Burnaby for the first time.

Tickets for the Great Northwest Showcase are on sale now at www.greatnorthwestshowcase.com, and fans are encouraged to purchase tickets now as they are selling quickly. Priced from $10-$20, these tickets could make that great stocking stuffer!

Princeton goalie Sean Bonar, a former Penticton Vee is from Delta BC, so this will be his first home game in a long time. Sean's a great kid, he will put the butts of a lot of friends and former team mates into the seats for Princeton's games.

I think the people have but one question:

How was Garry Valk at dropping the puck?

IMO UBC should get Harold Snepsts to drop a puck at one of their games. They'd easily sell out the building for that! The NHL needs more guys like Snepsts and Brad Marsh these days.
