I expected slightly better ratings in Seattle, but I guess considering the time the game aired it was a pretty good showing there

The NBC affiliate here moved the game to its secondary channel so as not to preempt the 5:00 news. Probably had a slight drag on the ratings.
Yes, KING 5 (Seattle's NBC affiliate) does put the game on the secondary channel, KONG for Mon.- Fri. games. Any weekend games like game 2 are on KING. The other reason that the Seattle ratings are lower than expected is that many viewers in that market watch the game on the CBC. Those ratings are not calculated. The same thing happens to the ratings in Buffalo and Detroit and other border states with smaller cities such as Spokane.

Game 3 on Vs.

First, viewership averaged 2.76 million viewers. That’s down from last year’s cable record of 3.6 million viewers for Philadelphia-Chicago which went into overtime. Again, we take into account one US market and Canadian markets are not measured by the US Nielsen ratings.
Viewership peaked at 3.52 million viewers in the 9:30 — 10 p.m. ET half hour in the 2nd period.
Versus says in the 8 — 11 p.m. time period, Versus ranked 3rd among all cable networks in primetime.
In Boston, Versus saw a 23.37 rating, the highest local rating ever for Versus. And the rating was up 57% from the last time the Bruins were on Versus which was game 7 of this year’s Eastern Conference Final against Tampa Bay.
And Versus was the top rated network on both cable and network TV in Boston and Providence.

So Boston has been 25, 21 and 23. Looks like we have no trouble finding where Vs. is.

This may sound like a stupid question so keep in mind I don't know how the channels work in the USA. Don't the Bruins get more viewers from Boston watching NESN than Versus?

Maybe during the regular season they did, but not in the playoffs. Due to the fact that NESN only gets 2nd round games, and starting next season they will only get the first round. The longer you go in the playoffs, the higher the local ratings.

Wasn't last night's game and tomorrow's on VS, and not NBC?

Yeah, but VS is now an NBC asset... and they're changing it to an NBC brand next season.

I just don't see the point of continuing to advertise a brand you're planning to drop like a hot potato. Why not go ahead and slap the NBC logo on the boards, while you have a massive audience?

Probably would cause confusion for the initial time being. Didnt the deal happen after the playoffs started? An interruption in the middle of the playoffs probably wouldnt have been the best move. I bet its NBCSports for the awards and draft.

Probably would cause confusion for the initial time being.

They're already running the NBC logo ahead of the broadcasts. Who would be confused by it? If anything, the confused person would then find out that NBC has acquired VS... thus gaining their first exposure to the pending re-brand.

I know it's not a huge deal, but it just seems like a mistake to keep on reinforcing a lame-duck brand.

I wonder how much a blow out sinks the ratings if much at all

I believe viewership peaked for the last game at the end of the second period. Usually it's in the third period that it peaks, which means lots of casual viewers changed the channel.

Had the game been 4-1 with a late goal in the third, then it could have probably done around 3.3 million instead of 2.75

I think ratings will go up in this case since it's mostly Bruins fans driving them.

Seattle would have been #2 if the CBC ratings were added into the equation.

Thanks for figuring that out for us. Wonder what Seattle's numbers for game one would have been with both markets factored in.

With a close rival and over 10,000 going to WHL hockey in the area, is there any doubt Seattle's ready for a team?

So, even though ratings are down from last year, the fact that it's not by much is still very good since there's only one US team involved, right?

Definitely. Only down 13%, even though last year had two massive US markets (Phi + Chi) and this year only has one. If you were to include Canadian ratings, this SCF would probably blow last year's out of the water with respect to ratings. Which is all very good news; NHL's gotta keep growing in terms of TV ratings.

Holding steady.

Game 5 drew a fast national of 4.35 million viewers (the number will go up in the final adjustments by a few hundred thousand) for NBC. That was down 27% from Game 5 in 2010, which drew 5.95 million viewers for the Philadelphia/Chicago series on a friendlier night for television. The game did, however, improve by 2% on Game 5 from 2009 between Pittsburgh and Detroit, which drew 4.28 million viewers. This, as I said, marks the second time in this series that Boston and Vancouver have improved on either of the last two Finals, as Game 1 was the most-watched in 12 years.

CBC’S HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA

An average audience of 6.1 million Canadians watched the Canucks 1-0 win over the Bruins

Friday’s Game 5 delivered a new ratings record for CBC’S HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA, with an average audience of 6.1 million Canadians tuning in. That’s the most-watched NHL broadcast in CBC history* – edging out the 5.6 million that watched earlier in this same series.

The game, which saw Vancouver defeat Boston 1-0 to take a 3-2 series lead, reached a total of just over 14 million different Canadians, and peaked at 10:53 pm ET when 8.9 million viewers tuned in to see the dramatic ending.

Game 6 of the series goes tonight in Boston, starting at 7:30 pm ET with Scotiabank Hockey Tonight on CBC’S HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA.

Only 25% of the population tuned in for a peak, and many think there is no room for growth of the game in Canada. I figure there are at least 20 million more Canadians we can convert.

I've seen data for individual markets in the US but is data like that available for Canada?

Also, are the people watching the game on the big screens in downtown Vancouver counted? With the amount of people doing that plus the people watching in Rogers Arena I would assume that's not negligible.

Overall

Last night’s Game 6, an easy win for Boston, drew a 3.9 overnight rating for the network, easily the highest-rated game of the 2010 season. Though this was down 33% from last year’s epic Chicago/Philadelphia series closer – which drew a 5.8 – it is even from the last non-clinching Game 6 NBC aired, between Detroit and Pittsburgh in 2009, which also scored a 3.9. It is up a terrific 44% from Game 6 of the 2006 Carolina/Edmonton Final, which is the last Game 6 to feature a Canadian team.

The ratings continue to be very strong. Really surprised it's up over 2009 Pittsburgh-Detroit, which was considered a dream final for the league (the hype was huge).

The game being blowout really sunk the ratings

The CBC says Monday’s Game 6 of the Stanley Cup final between Vancouver and Boston was its highest-ever-rated NHL game.

The public broadcaster says the game, which saw the Bruins defeat the Canucks 5-2 to tie the series 3-3, averaged an audience of 6.6 million viewers, making it the most-watched NHL broadcast in CBC history.

The introduction of a new measuring system in September 2009 has seen sports TV ratings skyrocket in Canada.

The game peaked at 8.1 million viewers near the end of the first period and reached a total of 16.2 million viewers — the most ever for the final on CBC.
