I believe Bonnie Prince Charlie was Chuck Rayner good sir. Gardiner on the other hand, a true tragic legend. Coworker of mine is the great grand niece of him and gave me a nice scan collection of Gardiner related articles from the old Winnipeg Tribune. I will try to upload them some day.

I think you might be right, my mistake. He was born in Scotland (Gardiner) and I remember him being referred to as "Smiling Charlie" and "The Roving Scotsman", may have confused the "Bonnie Prince Charlie" with Chuck Rayner.... And ya, that would be nice to see, some old articles from the Winnipeg Tribune. :)

Center: Joe Sakic $2
Right Wing: Jaromir Jagr $3
Left Wing: Brett Hull $1
Right Defense: Lidstrom $4
Left Defense: Chelios $2
Goalie: Hasek $5

Total: $17

3 insane scoring threats up front, with excellent puck movement. Anything that gets through them needs to go through Hasek.

I'll stick to those who impressed in the WHA (not the NHL stars who began or ended their careers with a whimper there).

Kent Nilsson ($4) - Serge Bernier ($4) - Tom Webster ($3)

Rick Ley ($3) - Ron Plumb ($2)

Joe Daley ($2)

I wanted Shmyr and almost settled on Ruskowski as a physical up the middle presence at center but decided Bernier was too good a fit and so went with WHA HOFer Plumb on the blueline.

Boy this brought back memories... thanks! :)

I'll go with ex-Seals where possible:

Hull - LW ($5)
Carleton - C ($1)
Ferguson - RW ($2)
Shmyr - D ($4)
Maggs - D ($1)
McLeod - G ($3)

and I've got $2 left over!

Bobby Hull(5) - Ulf Nilsson(5) - Anders Hedberg(5)
Ted Green(1) - Scott Campbell(1)
Wayne Rutledge(1)

I thought those three $1 picks were good bargains, so might as well grab the Hot Line and hope to win a lot of 7-6 games.

Well, you did extremely well High Budget & Low. Seriously, not a vast difference talent~wise whatsoever. Stevens instead of Chelios? I picked Stevens, could live with either or, somewhat ambivalent as they each bring a bit of different this n' that to the party yes?.... and Welcome to hf Iceman. Have fun. ;)

Thanks. Been reading the forums for a while so I decided to finally register. :)

yeah, hard not to go with the Hull-Nilsson-Hedberg line, but i figured i'd go with slightly cheaper forwards to bolster the D & goaltending:

M Howe $4
Nedomansky $3
Cloutier $4
Roberts $2
Langevin $2
Dryden $3

Keeping wingers at their real life sides. Which do you like better?

Team A
Dickie Moore(1) - Joe Sakic (2) - Jaromir Jagr(3)
Doug Harvey(5) - Bobby Orr(6)
Ed Belfour(1)

OR

Team B
Dickie Moore(1) - Joe Sakic (2) - Gordie Howe(6)
Bobby Orr(6) - Chris Chelios(2)
Ed Belfour(1)

Leaning towards Team B, for Team A I'm a little worried that there wouldn't be enough puck to go around between Orr and Harvey.

The most psychotic team I could come up with for $18.
Lindsay-Clarke-Richard: $11
Cleghorn-Shore: $5
Belfour: $1

An attempt to design a balanced, offensively strong team for $11:
Moore-Richard-Br. Hull: $3
Stevens-Orr: $7
Durnan: $1

.... good one. Some far more "psychotic" players available than that lot though. Lots of em. Id include Shore on Defense for sure and though Sprague Cleghorn ranks up there, might wanna pick Billy Coutu instead. Only played a few seasons as he was Banned for Life for "assaulting" a Referee & Linesman during the 1927 Stanley Cup. In terms of Head Cases this guy was a real piece of work. He'd had an on-going feud with Shore & winds up traded to Boston. First practice with the Bruins, Body~Slams Eddie into the boards, head butts him in the process, stick up, severing Shores ear.... Also you might wanna go with a 14Karat Nutjob in the crease with either Suitcase Smith (not uncommon for him to leave the ice after a loss in full gear, get into his car & drive home) or Gilles "The Count" Gratton who believed in Reincarnation & that he could remember all of his past lives in Total Recall. Loved sharing them with his team mates, in interviews. How he'd been a "Spanish Count" & so on. In one interview on NBC starts off with "you know, I have to tell you"..... then goes on to explain how he used to line~up the peasantry against the castle walls & whip rocks at them.... As for Lindsay, Clarke & Richard, nope. You want guys like Ted Green, Eddie Shack, Link Gaetz etc.... and welcome to hf. ;)

True enough, but I wanted to stay on the menu for this team. If you could pick just anybody it would look a lot different, but I figured this was about as bad as you could get from the choices offered in OP. I also wanted it to be at least somewhat competitive; anybody could probably get near the top if they picked outright goons, but getting a mean team that can also compete at a high level is something else. Otherwise, it just comes down to finding the three forwards+two defensemen with the highest rate of penalty minutes per game, then finding someone like Hextall or Billy Smith to cap it off. Thanks for the reply and welcome.

This idea really hammers home the idea of a 10 team Auction ATD. One at a time each GM would nominate a player and have an opening bid. The auction for each player would last 24 hours, 1 bid per GM on each player. You'd have to outbid the previous bid by Min. $5. $150 budget for 3 forward line, 4 D and a Goalie.
