I felt that Trottier, Potvin and Parent were all relatively cheap. Hull was expensive, but can't find myself passing on the arguably greatest goalscorer in the history.

Mark Messier, $3
Bobby Clarke, $3
Jaromir Jagr, $3
Bobby Orr, $6
Chris Chelios, $2
Bernie Parent, $1

...or possibly:

Jari Kurri, $1
Wayne Gretzky, $7
Mario Lemieux, $6
Paul Coffey, $2
Sprague Cleghorn, $1
Bernie Parent, $1

...or if I can't use Messier as a Left Wing or Lemieux as a Right Wing, either:

Frank Mahovlich, $2
Wayne Gretzky, $7
Jari Kurri, $1
Bobby Orr, $6
Scott Stevens, $1
Bernie Parent, $1

...or this:

Bobby Hull, $5
Jean Beliveau, $5
Brett Hull, $1
Paul Coffey, $2
Eddie Shore, $4
Bernie Parent, $1

It reminds me of those LSAT puzzles: Bernie Parent, at his price, is probably the only goaltender I should consider. If I don't take Bobby Orr, I take Paul Coffey. If I take Paul Coffey, his defensive partner needs to be physical. The Kurri/Gretzky/Coffey combination at $10 is beautiful, because along with Parent, you still have $7 to spend on a Winger and a Defenseman. I used that $7 on Lemieux and Cleghorn, but I could just as easily do Messier and Potvin with a $1 to spare.

Okay, one last one with a new goalie:

Mark Messier, $3
Bryan Trottier, $2
Gordie Howe, $6
Denis Potvin, $3
Paul Coffey, $2
Charlie Gardiner, $2

Hull-Esposito-Jagr ($10)
Orr-Pilote ($7)
Parent ($1)

4 of the top 10 or so best offensive players of all time, I probably could've made a more complete team if I ignored proper winger positions (initially had Bossy for Hull and Potvin for Pilote) but I wanted to use an actual LW and Bobby Hull seems to be #1 by such a huge margin it didn't make sense to not pick him. I felt the same way about picking Bobby Orr, which meant $11/$18 gone on two players.

Pretty hard not to go with Parent here The more I think about it, the more of a steal he feels like.

Also, Kurri is pretty decent prized, but he should only be picked with Gretzky, IMO.

I was doing:

LW: Mark Messier
C: Bryan Trottier
RW: Gordie Howe

so that's the crazed, early-1980s version of Messier.

Seems a lot of people are putting Kurri on the left side. Is that allowed?

Didn't he used to play LW before Blair MacDonald got hurt? Before Callighen-Gretzky-Kurri, I believe it was Kurri-Hagman-Anderson, right? I tried to keep him on RW unless I was using the Gretzky/Lemieux duo though.

it was Anderson on the left side of the Hagman-Kurri line. Anderson mostly played left wing until Messier was switched permanently to center, then Anderson rode Messier's right side for the rest of his time in Edmonton, 83 onward. actually, for a while in 81-82, Hagman & Kurri were separated, & Hagman played between Messier on the left & Anderson on the right for a couple of months.

Down Under
Kurri - Lemieux - Jagr
Coffey - Stevens
Hasek

66 and 68 fits nice together, and having Kurri there both to snipe and to do some groundwork sounds sound to me as well. The D is good value and complements eachother real well. Hasek in net is a luxury du to that D value, to have the GOAT there is good insurance.

Was very hard for me to get this together but I pretty quickly picked Lemieux, Jagr and Lidström without realizing the cost which brought me down to $5 left which made me actually ended up with the following team and actually being below $18 but that was mostly because of the lack of possible good picks in the $2 bracket except for in the defence maybe.

I ended up with $3 left for a goalkeeper and a winger so Parent definitely made it a bit easier cause he is definitely a steal which some people pointed out. I can't see any other options unless I wanna drop Lemieux or Lidström. Jagr was pretty cheap too.

Jari Kurri -(1$) - Mario Lemieux ($6) - Jaromir Jagr ($3)

Nicklas Lidström ($4) - Paul Coffey ($2)

Bernie Parent - ($1)

TOTAL: $17

--------------------------------------------------

Here is my "low"-budget team. Originally going for the $10 cap with Stevens instead of Chelios but I couldn't make myself to do that so I ended up with $11.

Jari Kurri -(1$) - Joe Sakic ($2) - Jaromir Jagr ($3)

Paul Coffey ($2) - Chris Chelios ($2)

Bernie Parent - ($1)

Total: $11

Well, you did extremely well High Budget & Low. Seriously, not a vast difference talent~wise whatsoever. Stevens instead of Chelios? I picked Stevens, could live with either or, somewhat ambivalent as they each bring a bit of different this n' that to the party yes?.... and Welcome to hf Iceman. Have fun. ;)

I believe Bonnie Prince Charlie was Chuck Rayner good sir. Gardiner on the other hand, a true tragic legend. Coworker of mine is the great grand niece of him and gave me a nice scan collection of Gardiner related articles from the old Winnipeg Tribune. I will try to upload them some day.

Jagr at 3 bucks is a bargain seeing as he's the 3rd best winger of all time behind Howe and Hull.
