Why did he fall so far?

I believe shut-down D are a bit unheralded, and unfairly so. But believe me, he's just a tremendous get at #118

I also feel there were a bunch of big defensive d-men in this draft. Last year there were a ton speedy little guys. This year the opposite. And maybe cause McCarthy was not as big as some of them he fell? I mean heck, look at the defensive d-men we picked ahead of him.

There really weren't so many big defensive defensemen. I felt the Devils drafted 4 of the 10 most physical D in the draft -- clearly this was a target area of need, and thankfully so.

To me -- if there is a Jake Slavin in this draft, it's McCarthy. I see him as a shut-down, team-first guy with high-end compete level and physicality. It is possible he progresses at Boston University faster than anyone suspects.

If you exclude the guys with more offensive upside like Seider, Vlasic or Tuomisto then sure. And maybe teams demand some level of offensive ability from their draftees? Going with the idea it's easier to teach defense then offense.

Misyul has greater offensive upside than Vlasic, likely similar to Tuomisto -- and is far more defensively advanced than either of those two. Case McCarthy was a far superior player on the same US-NTDP blueline than Vlasic. I agree that Seider is an absolute stud.

Wonder why the kid fell so far

Why did he fall so far?

Very fortunate that he was still available at 118. :nono:

McCarthy didnt really fall, and the Devils werent "fortunate" he was around >100 picks in, he got picked right about where most professional scouts had him being picked.

NHL Central Scouting had him at #77 in North America, which is somewhere over #100 overall.
Future considerations listed him #111, which is right near where the Devils snagged him.

I have no idea where this idea (solely seemingly on this board) that he was going to be a late 1st-Round pick came from.

I had McCarthy ranked higher than anyone, but I also did my darnedest to explain precisely why. It's irrelevant now, anyone would agree he was a huge value at #118.

Whats with this false narrative of McCarthy freefalling? He was taken a little bit later where he was ranked by many people (no offense to Steve who does great work). That is why the outrage yesterday of him ‘falling’ made no sense. He didn’t fall a lot.

I think this is a really great pick. However I would like to know what @StevenToddIves thinks about Corey Pronman's description of McCarthy, especially that bolded part:

"Case McCarthy, D (No. 118): McCarthy has a good toolkit between his skating, skill and shot. He also has a physical component to his game. His decision-making with the puck leaves a lot to be desired, though."

So does the outrage start now or did I miss it 2 days ago of wither or not Case would sign with us or spend the 4 years in college and become a FA? :sarcasm:

Pronman is not just wrong, he is extremely wrong. Though I am a big supporter of Pronman, sometimes his idealization of the defense position baffles me -- making the safe play and chipping the puck up the boards is not always the wrong choice. If you'd rather see an Anttoni Honka try to stickhandle out of the zone every time only to turn the puck over five times a game, that's up to you.

Clarence Center's Case McCarthy hoping to represent USA at world juniors

He's been working with Nick Tuzzolino and following a training regimen designed by BU strength coach Kyle Czech. There's a lot of details in the article.

“I think obviously with the world junior camp, even more so, he kind of knew he was pushing for a shutdown type of role – first-pass, hard-nosed defenseman,” said Tuzzolino. “I think that’s his niche in New Jersey. ... His willingness to constantly go back and work on his weaknesses is everything. He’s so good at the little things because he doesn’t let himself off the hook on any of them when it comes to one-on-one private to a pro skate he was the least, frankly, quote unquote, pro on the ice. He won’t cut any corner whatsoever.”

Nobody messes with the Tuzzolino brothers lol

Case fished the puck out of traffic on the wall at the offensive blue line and backhanded it across to the opposite half board where Cockerill picked it up off the carom and took it in.

And then is so busy doing his celly thing that he totally leaves Case hanging.
