I actually wondered the very same.

I was told that many of the people after the start of the game were checking out the arena, and the different clubs/restaurants all around the concourse. They apparently show the game on the giant screen that envelopes the entire upper bowl, so I doubt many missed too much. But that's always been the story over the years, even at the Joe, a lot of the lower bowl seats are bought by companies & corporations, so they are not always in a hurry to get to their seats.
I kinda figured it was somewhat to do with the new arena affect. People wanting to check the place out. Walking around in intermissions and losing track of time or getting stuck up there trying to get back to their seats.

It seems like a lot of stadiums these days leave a bunch of empty seats due to corporations. There certainly must have been a lot of people wandering as well, but the section behind the benches looked like it had 50 people in it for the third period. It was really odd for the opening game in a new stadium.

Doobs could've been better on the last two goals, but he was awesome early on, including a showstopper on a breakaway.

IS Suter even capable of moving the puck quickly. All he does on the PP is slow down the puck movement , allowing the PK to regain position.

And if Dumba isn't going to be on the point during the PP, then why is he even on the team?

Brodin and Dumba looked mediocre at best. Even Spurgeon looked meh. A game like this really drives home how much we lack an impact forward. Granlund was the best thing out there, I guess?

Also felt like we were fighting the Wings AND the refs all night. There were some damn weak calls, and both interference calls were puzzling to me. Initially, Foligno put himself in the crease, but he was held in there afterward by DRW players so he couldn't get out, THEN the puck went in. On the second one, Granlund was getting mugged, and was shouldered into the goalie. THAT should've been an interference penalty on DRW.

Can't win 82. Wild were the better team 5v5, but PP's were wildly different between the two clubs. The Wild's 5v3 was hard to watch. I'm guessing they didn't practice PP at all because they had no idea who was supposed to be initiating the PP attack.

Pretty surprised to see Staal had the most 5v5 ice time among forwards. Outside of maybe 1 or 2 plays I didn't notice him at all. Until Coyle lost his shit didn't notice him much either. The Koivu line controlled the puck but didn't seem like a consistent threat to ever score.

On the plus side the bottom 6 was solid. Foligno and Cullen were good, Ennis had a positive though not overwhelmingly great game. Winnik had a great night and that penalty against him looked BS. From the replay it looked like there wasn't even contact to the stick.

Brodin saved a goal and overall had a positive game, Suter-Spurgeon is still just such a great pair. The 3rd pair looked decent but I don't know if they even got ice time in the 3rd.

Poms had two goals and apparently Scandella was impressive for BUFF.

That hit on Coyle was not dirty. Selfish to get a penalty retaliating for it, at a time when the team needed to focus on a comeback.

Was frustrating seeing those goals. Those are exactly the situations Pominville was good at, finding a soft spot on the back door ready for a quick shot after a feed. He got those chances with the Wild but it seemed every time the puck hopped over his stick or he missed the net. I don't mind that he's having some early season success but it would have been nice if he could have finished those chances with us the last few years like he did last night.

Even against teams that aren't supposed to be all that good, you're still going to only have so many shots at it, so the two no-goal calls (1st one probably right, 2nd one very much disagree with) and the empty 5v3 were tough to swallow. Then add in Detroit scored twice on pucks that were going wide and you get that result. On to Carolina.

Well it isn't exactly in the nicest of areas either. One of the big issues with Detroit in general to be honest.

True, a lot of Detroit (like any Downtown area) has its shady areas, but the Arena itself looks to be just further down on Woodward, which is not far from Comerica Park, Ford Field, Campus Martius, Hard Rock Cafe, Fox Theatre, and within driving distance to 3 Casino's.

In short, there's plenty to do and see in and around Woodward Ave (the first paved road in the country, as a nerdy side fact), lots to check out and be perfectly fine.

The things I took away from this game:

-4th line will be good, but they need to learn each other's games. Same with the current 3rd line, actually, even though they were the only line that scored. I noticed a lot of missed passes on those lines, and it was because someone would drop the puck to where they thought a teammate would be, and that teammate had already started skating away from there. Timing was an issue with those lines, and that'll come together in time, as they play together and get more familiar with each other.

-Coyle on the point is not great. The only reason to have him up there is because he's a right handed shot. The problem is his shot isn't about being a boomer from long distance, and his style isn't one that does well from the defensive line. He's a forward, a big, skilled one! We need to utilize his strengths as such. We could have used a right hand shot among the forwards for that first PP line. Also, what are Dumba and Spurgeon for? Both are good offensively, both are defensemen, and both would do better up there at that point. Why aren't we using them there? Bruce is a smart coach, so there must be some reason he put those lines together like that, but it clearly didn't work.

-We're going to miss Pominville and Parise. I was thinking that even before I saw Pominville's stat line last night. He was just really good on that 3rd line, and they were missing him. Luckily, we should be getting one of them back, eventually.

-As usual, Dubnyk is great at making the difficult saves, and for some reason has lapses on the routine ones. I've always felt he's a goalie that will let in 1-2 goals against most games, occasionally 3, but will rarely either get a shutout, or let in 4. If you can score in front of him, you'll win most games.

All in all, disappointing game in that we could have won it, but I can't be too upset. A lot of what went wrong is fixable.

I came away with the same thing. I was impressed with Foligno on that 3rd line, but you could tell they were just not quite in sync. Times where they would leave it on the boards just when the other player circled to a different area of the ice. Things like that.

That will all come together as they get more minutes together, and it will only make that line better.

That felt like a playoff game to me. Tons of pregame ceremonial-type stuff, then a period-plus of solid play but after two overturned goals you know what it's getting nice outside so I don't mind that this won't last much longer after all.

So, to the important questions. What does Little Caesars pizza cost at Little Caesars Arena? Is it true that everywhere you see an empty seat, a little boy is getting his wings for giving his old man shit for getting a terrible deal on pizza?

Russo on KFAN tonight said that the place was packed, but they have so many club areas that at the beginning of each period the place looked empty because so many fans were out of their seats and gathered in their respective club spaces.

He said the arena is very similar to US Bank Stadium in terms of the sheer amount of different club spaces for fans.
