Really, really hoping he's going to be back in time for the playoffs, but what's most important is he takes enough time to heal properly before coming back. It's good they did the surgery without really waiting so he can recover as soon as possible.

'Removing a part of disc'? Doesn't sound very nice for Z's future career. But what do I know

Shut him down. I don't care if he's sitting in his mansion doing cartwheels during playoff games, he's played a ton of hockey the last... decade. The team isn't going to become a championship contender when he's here, and they're not going to nose bomb when he's gone. But that's assuming Datsyuk is healthy. That time table seems very short for any kind of back surgery, and for him to play this season unless we're miraculously playing in late May would not be smart.

Has someone ever recovered fully from back surgery and never showed signs of it, before? Especially at his age, this will affect him in some capacity from here on I'm sure.

In 1994 Steve Yzerman had a herniated disk removed from his neck and two vertebrae fused together. Afterwards he went on to play in 11 more NHL seasons, amassing 699 games, 633 pts, 4 Stanley Cups, a Conn Smythe Trophy, Selke Trophy, Masterson Trophy all while being the Captain of the most successful franchise in the NHL over that time period.

I think it can be done.

I think it's best to leave it up to the back specialists on whether it's smart or not. I love Z, I want to watch him play for many more years, but if he's ready to play during the playoffs and is feeling good, I would expect him to be in the lineup. He's getting paid a ton of money to play and he's the leader of the team, I think he would expect himself to play, too.

That's almost what worries me. His work ethic is so strong, he WANTS to play so bad that he's played through injuries constantly. I'm extremely worried he's going to try to come back too soon because he feels like he owes it to everyone to play.

I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I thought Allen was the one who broke his leg with the slash...? Or was that Belak?

On another note, it's amazing how Holland will basically have escaped any and all significant cap issues based on injuries alone this year, since it looks like Z will be out til the playoffs. For such an anti-trading GM, he's probably breathing a sigh of relief now.

I'm pretty sure it was actually Brad Stuart in the flames series with all of the crosschecks to the back. Allen was the slash.

I am not sure, but I think it was the game vs Canucks and I believe Allen crosschecked him and he has had back problems ever since. But I might remember wrong.

I wouldn't say Datsyuk needs to step up, rather he just needs to stay healthy. It's not like he's played like a bum this season.

Weiss needs to step up and Franzen needs to discover what consistency is... the GOOD side of consistency.

I do not think we will get consistancy from Franzen, but if he can get back and stay healthy great.
Weiss on the other hand has to be better, he can not be any worse..

I believe it was Brad Stuart, then with the Calgary Flames, who gave Zetterberg a few hard crosschecks back in 2007 that lead to him missing the last twenty games or so of the regular season.

It was the playoffs?

But I believe the 1st time it was back in '04/'05 regular season game. I am not 100% sure.

Everyone crosschecks him the back. Why not? **** sportsmanship, it wins games, and no one on this team will every retaliate in the slightest. It drives me nuts seeing scrubs like Jackman and Gudas lumberjack away on him every damn time they play.

It was a regular season game against Calgary when he was playing some of the best hockey of his career as I recall.

It's probably hard to point to one specific incident that's caused all his problems, though. I'd imagine it has more to do with the way Z gets leaned on while protecting the puck with his body.

Oh yeah, the 04-05 season. That really was a forgettable season. Almost as if it didn't even happen. :sarcasm:

But yeah the important thing here is that Zetterberg gets healthy. I don't believe this is the Red Wings' year anyway so if they shut him down then so be it. I'm not saying tank but just don't risk further, career threatening injury by rushing him back.
