We talk about players being on the move because they are overpaid but by how much? What I want to know is, all things considered how much has Zaitsev earned on a 5 year contract signed today?

I would also like to know how much does the gap between what his real contract is worth (5 x 4.5) and what you think he is worth over 5 years going to cost the Leafs in a trade. Examples of other cap dumps encouraged.

From what we've heard so far, he's not being treated like a cap dump, but the Leafs are probably going to get a "soft" return for him.

Considering Tyler Myers is likely to sign for more than 6 million a year long term it wouldn't be a stretch for Zaitsev to get his current contract as a UFA today.

If I had to decide: 5 years x 3.5 million
If he were UFA tomorrow: 5 years x 5.0 million

Not kidding, NHL GMs are dumb. Someone would likely pay him more than his current contract gives him.

If he were on the UFA market right now, he'd make similar money, if not more due to UFA inflation and a weak market.

I don't think anyone would give him a 5-year contract if he were a UFA this summer. That's a long commitment for a guy who's playing toward the bottom of your roster.

Nobody would give him 5 years right now, NOBODY. You can argue the value though.

I think most teams would give him 5 years right now. Are teams not going to give Myers 5 or 6 years then too? He's 2 years older, so his ends at 34 or 35. Zaitsev ends at 32, which is the kind of age you want it to end.

He’s a solid 5/6 long term. He can spot duty top 4 but expecting he’s a legitimate top 4 for that duration is to be wishfully ignorant.

Should be worth $2.25 million per on the high side.

At 5 years, he would have to give a discount on his AAV. Jack Johnson went for term last year, but came under $3.5 mil. Contrast that with another 2018 free agent, Ian Cole, who got $4.25 mil on a 3 year deal.

Jack Johnson received his deal at 31, so his goes until he's 36. That plays a large part in it too.

Ian Cole goes from 30-33.

So that is a no? Benefit of Zaitsev is that the UFA tax doesn't apply, because if it did, he'd probably make more than 4.5 mill on the open market.

His deal could've been much worse is what you're saying.

habs fans, ladies and gentleman. Showing why not only their teams logo is a toilet bowl, but their posts are deserving of the toilet as well.

How surprising coming from a someone who’s team hasn’t won a playoff round in well over a decade.

He could be making more than 4.5 mill if he was on the UFA market.

Then why are you trying to get rid of your only NHL caliber RHD if he’s signed below market price for 5 more years?

Jensen is a better Dman and signed for 4 years 2.5 million per as a pending UFA after being traded to Washington. Something along the lines of that I would assume.

Zaitsev wants out. Before that, Dubas wanted to trade him at the TDL so he could get a top pairing type guy, and if we got that guy, then Zaitsev became a luxury. If Zaitsev did not want out, then we'd probably keep him. We may keep him anyways.

A comparable that comes to mind is Alzner - although he was a smidgen older and showing obvious signs of decline - and some team was idiotic enough to give him 5 years at almost $5M per.
