Hyman had a great playoffs. He regained his Nov-Dec form, and helped his line out.

But I'm posting here because I’ve seen, in the year-end grades, a lot of folks saying Hyman is a good penalty killer. He plays the PK a lot, yes. In fact, he leads the league in PK TOI. But that doesn’t mean he’s good at it. The below includes all our guys who played more the 60min on the PK, and the league leader/loser who played more than 120m on the PK…

His effort was fine in the playoffs but I still don't think he has the talent anywhere else outside of forechecking to be a regular top 9 winger. I sure hope he doesn't get overpaid based on effort alone because if you have no other skills to fall back on and the effort starts to flag, well...

What is one year of Bozak really worth? A 2nd from a playoff calibre team? It is not bad and no I am not undervaluing our scouts. Just that the situation we are in with plenty of solid prospects and such a young core, we really need to keep a couple of veteran guys like Bozak around.

55 point c and one of the best face off men in the league

and you think all he is worth is a 2nd?

how odd.

Hyman is a valuable member of the Leafs and among leafs best 2-way forwards and best PKer. Nothing not to like about his 120% effort every shift of every game.

The Leafs will rise as a team however when current roster players end up on the depth chart where their skillsets dictate.

Hyman is a 3rd line player on offensive talent and would fit well in the bottom 6 in a checking/shutdown and energy role.

He is currently playing higher up the depth chart due to Leafs weaker LW spots and the coaches desire to balance his 3 offensive lines.

If Bozak is dealt this summer, then I could see a Hyman -- Nylander (learning C position) -- Kapanen as Leafs 3rd line.

You guys can complain all you want about how he's used but to me, that's just nitpicking - I think his value to us this season was more than most people think. The guy came from nowhere, played his butt off every shift setting a valuable example for everyone else and made a solid contribution in his own right. Bottom line is that McKegg had no future here and that we were able to parlay him into this guy who ended up playing next to Matthews all season is just amazing. No matter where he slots in going forward, Hyman did a great job this season and is now a valuable asset.

So is your argument against him being a good penalty killer because he has the MOST sh toi in the league AND is still top 5 in all those stats categories?

try reading it again.

I trust babcock but he needs to try something else at least for an extended period. maybe hes just using hyman as a placeholder guy to eat minutes and easing in the other rookies, i think its still a long term plan

Babcock will likely have more options at LW to choose from at the start of ne t season which may lead to Hyman playing down the lineup in a role better suited for him. Better for the player, better for the team.

I don't know Daniel. Perhaps read my post. I'm asking for clarification.
I'm not sure what he's saying.

Leafs Home Board
XXXX -- Matthews -- Marner
Komarov -- Kadri -- Brown
Hyman -- Nylander -- Kapanen
Martin --- XXXX ---- Soshnikov

Means JVR, Bozak and Boyle are OUT !!!

Leafs need to find a new Hyman with more offensive skill, but with all the great traits Zach has to replace him on the top line.

He's a top five PK forward on the Leafs.

I included best/worst in the league so we can see how different Leafs compare not only to each other but the league more broadly. It's not a full list of every penalty killing forward in the NHL.

Sorry for confusion.

So the upshot is Hyman is the 4th best forward on the PK on this team. Yeah, he's a rookie, but so are Brown and Sosh, who are appreciably better, and Kappy, who looked more promising in the quick look we got at the end of the season.

How close were the others in sh toi to hyman?

I had previously pointed out that our PK has sucked for the last 40 ish games & Hyman was the 4th best of our 4 regular PK forwards. But that doesn't fit the "Hyman is a PK beast" rant.

Good thing Leivo didn't play, he doesn't do PK. Not as though we needed his scoring prowess, especially considering our playoff PK was 14th out of 16 at 70.6%. :sarcasm:

My 4th highlight-montage for.. Zach Hyman..., who presently plays Wing position with the 2016-17 Toronto Maple Leafs...
Zach was one of six Leafs 2016-17 Rookies, in the NHL's Top 21...

He's a two-way (offender-defender).., who comes from Toronto..
and is ready to play.., in every game..

If Hyman had a little more nastiness to his game he'd be great.

He plays with a lot of energy and he's a bit of a pest but he just needs to be a little meaner to play the role he does.
