The thing is, Helm is at 3.85 for 3 more years, and he's a solid 3rd line guy. In my ****ty opinion, that's borderline overpaid; and in a couple of years of Cap inflation when his contract is up, it will be a bargain 3rd-line guy contract.

Of course it's not a "bargain" now, but in a rebuilding scenario, you've gotta pay to have the roleplayers/mentors play.
Its quite literally the way the salary structure is set up. You get older and you get paid more based on what you've done then what you can do today. Its not by accident either.

All 31 team are trying to roll that way and as a result, sooner or later, all give in. Because you will come to a point of need in order to keep winning and will have to sign your own free agents or those on the market.
Take Chicago, would it be even remotely feasable to let Toews or/and Kane walk? As a result, downgrades elsewhere had to be made, like losing Panarin.

Witkowski is a much more capable player than I initially realized upon his signing. Ideally you want him as an 8th/call up on a good team, but for a tanking team, he's fine as a 6th/7th. What he lacks for skill he does his best to make up for with work ethic, grit, and entertainment factor (fights). As anyone who has played a sport can attest, players like that, good character guys in a locker room, are worth their weight in gold, even if not the most talented.

If we're going to suck, he's more fun to watch than players like Ericsson at this stage.

Helmer played almost a full season in GRG then came up and played every PO game for the DRW - 2 consecutive years in a row. He deserves $$ for he played for a lot less those 2 years
