*Note* Not a mock draft, a top-30 of the best players available to the Sabres. Post yours.

Edit: Now with Notes!

1 Sam Reinhart C (WHL) R 6' 1" 185
Notes: For me, Reinhart and Bennett are neck and neck. With that said, I've felt all along Reinhart has a slight edge, based mainly on 3 ppg years in the CHL.

2 Sam Bennett C (OHL) L 6' 0.25" 178
Note: My favorite player in the draft. Complete package of speed and skill. Worried about durability further down the road with his style, but he'll be an exciting player to watch. I have him ahead of Ekblad soley based on Sabres need.

3 Aaron Ekblad D (OHL) R 6' 3.5" 216
Note: He doesn't jump out at me the way Jones did last year. I see him as a very, very good defensemen, but not enough to justify taking him over either Sam.

4 Leon Draisaitl C (WHL) L 6' 1.75" 208
Note: Best non-Sam center. As mentioned by others, I do see some Grigorenko in his on-ice motion, but he seems more assertive in board battles then Grigs. I don't expect to see him as a Sabre.

5 Nikolai Ehlers LW (MJAHL) L 5' 11.5" 170
Note: It's close, but of the next 3 guys, Ehlers is the one I think would have a fall-back game if he wasn't producing. I expect him to be a very fast goal scoring threat. That being said, I could also see him as a great checking line speed guy in the Matt Read mold (maybe not as physical).

6 Michael dal Colle LW (OHL) L 6' 1.5" 179
Note: Great Shot. Great Sniper. A bit overrated size-wise I think. Personally, he looks like Armia but less board-battle skill to me. Still, a solid pick at 6.

7 William Nylander C (Allsvenskan) R 5' 11" 175
Note: Pure offensive boom/bust. He's Patrick Kane in all but name. He'll either wow a team with offensive skills (who has defensive forwards to cover him), or he'll flame out.

8 Nick Ritchie RW (OHL) L 6' 2.25" 230
Note: Great size and battle. Fits that 'heavy' team Murray's talking up.

9 Haydn Fleury D (WHL) L 6' 2.75" 204
Note: Big, mobile for his size. Left-handed shot. He'd be a stellar pick-up if he fell. Some people think our defensive depth is set. I disagree.

10 Jared McCann C (OHL) L 5' 11.5" 174
Note: Plays bigger than he is. Could be a future captain in the league. Strong defensive play. You win with these players today.

11 Jake Virtanen RW (WHL) R 6' 0.75" 208
Note: Heck of a shot. I think he falls second to Dal Colle in shot power, but he's got a great one. He edges Tuch with his speed.

12 Alex Tuch RW (USAH-NTDP) R 6' 3" 222
Note: Since I'm typing this post-Murray's 6/19 presser, I can add that I believe this is the trade-up-to-the-teens target. Big. Battles. Gets flack for not being an offensive catalyst because he plays with Eichel. I see him as a player with range, even if the scoring isn't there.

13 Ivan Barbashev LW (QMJHL) L 6' 0.5" 185
Note: Maybe the most stand-out d-forward to me outside of McCann. Seems to make all the right reads. Saw him live in Halifax, and he effectively shut down Drouin all night. Moncton won 2-0.

14 Brendan Perlini LW (OHL) L 6' 2.5" 205
Note: If he was a little more consisent, I'd have him ahead of Virtanen and Tuch. When he's on, there isn't much better in this draft in terms of scoring power wingers.

15 Roland McKeown D (OHL) R 6' 1" 185
Note: Best skating d-man in this draft. Effective PP-QB, set-up man (we need one bad). First pass is awesome. Hyperbole here, but I see a young Duncan Keith in McKeown.

16 Adrian Kempe LW (Sweden) L 6' 1.5" 187
Note: All about the Puck Possession. The swedish hounds of Kempe/Larsson would be quite a pair. Worried about his ability to fore-check though.

17 Kasperi Kapanen LW (SM-liiga) R 5' 11" 172
Note: At this point, the talent drops off in my eyes. Kapanen tops the list here mainly on 'potential'. Good skating, good handler. Not a strong battler.

18 Dylan Larkin C (USHL) L 6' 0.75" 190
Note: Decent size. Defensive-center potential at the NHL level.

19 Robbie Fabbri C (OHL) L 5' 9.25" 166
Note: You can't deny some serious offensive potency here. Unfortunately, he looks like a better version of Tyler Ennis, and we already have a Tyler Ennis. Were this the 05-06 team, he's an easy add.

20 Nikolay Goldobin LW (OHL) L 5' 11.5" 178
Note: Pros: speed for days, and a good release. Cons: off-ice attitude. The cons keep him from being in the 10-16 group for me.

21 Nikita Scherbak LW (WHL) L 6' 0" 172
Note: High IQ winger with a knack for finding his way to the puck. I really see a less-big Baptiste with a bit weaker shot.

22 Jack Dougherty D (HS-MN) R 6' 1" 185
Note: Size is alright, but the key here is first pass. He has a good one. The one of unheralded strengths of the Chicago defense is the first pass.

23 Thatcher Demko G (USHL) L* 6' 3" 190
Note: Best goalie in a crop of decent 2nd round talent. He's a 1st for me mainly due to the weakness of the other choices(non-goalies) in round 1. Could be the high-upside goalie the Sabs are said to need.

24 Kevin Fiala RW (Sweden) L 5' 9.75" 165
Note: A feasty battler. He's not quite Marchand, but he'll mix it up. Has some offensive talent to boot.

25 Travis Sanheim D (WHL) L 6' 3" 181
Note: A big riser since the CHL season ended. I do see the size, and make note of the offensive talent he showed, I just question his skating. Moreso as a defensemen. Still, at this point, a potential top-4 'project' is a solid pick.

26 Conner Bleackley C (WHL) R 6' 0.5" 192
Note: When Baker mentioned O'Reilly comparisons, I had to go back and re-watch this kid. I sort of see it (could've been a while selective seeing by me), but I think he's a ways off from that. Another 'pick on potential', which is really the rest of this draft.

27 Brandon Lemieux LW (OHL) L 6' 0" 211
Note: I personally 'want' him higher, but talent trumped some positions. His ceiling is a third-liner. I feel he's a pretty good lock for that 3/4 line pesk role. Name and size will help, but he also seems to score timely goals. Good 3/4 liners are usually claimed to be such for 1) good defensive play 2) toughness 3) timely goals. Dave Bolland built a mighty reputation scoring timely goals and playing pesky defense. Lemieux isn't Bolland, but he's a guy I see making an impact on a future cup winner. I hope we get him at 31/39.

28 Sonny Milano LW (USHL) L 5' 11.5" 183
Note: Another offensive boom/bust, but not nearly as talented as Nylander. I'd take him over Schmaltz though. He'd basically fill the role Ennis currently should have when we're good (match-up scoring line, heavy o-line start lw), except Ennis is developing a bit of an edge. So. hopefully we pass.

29 David Pastrnak LW (Allsvenskan) R 5' 10" 165
Note: Again, offensive potency when the puck is with him (think Hodgson). Suspect when it isn't (think Hodgson).

30 Anton Karlsson LW (SEL) L 6' 1" 189
Note: The b version of Lemieux. I have less hope for him than the former, but still, heck of a checking-role player.

  1. Bennett
  2. Reinhart
  3. Draisaitl
  4. Ekblad-I think he will be a solid d-man in the league but I'm not very high on him. I think he could disappoint some despite being one of the "sure fire" players in the draft.
  5. Ehlers
  6. Dal Colle
  7. Fabbri
  8. Goldobin-Definitely some boom potential. He's a guy that could fall into a range for the Sabres to grab.
  9. Barbashev-One of my favorites from early on. Would love to trade up and grab him, but I think he will go earlier than the area we can trade up into.
  10. Milano-I know he's a bit high on my list, but if his vision/skills translate to the NHL he could be a strong playmaker.
  11. Nylander
  12. Fleury
  13. Ritchie
  14. Virtanen-Lower ceiling than guys above him, but a 'safe' pick.
    [*]
McKeown-I think he's really good from what I've seen which isn't much.
  15. Scherbak-Another one with a high ceiling. Some of his moves really are similar to Malkin's, but the chance of that staying true in the NHL aren't too high. If they do though he could be great.
  16. Honka-Could be a huge steal just like the other d-men that could go in the first round.
  17. McCann-Underrated-probably even by myself
  18. Kempe
  19. Hawryluk
  20. Fiala
  21. Vrana
  22. De Leo
  23. Sanheim
  24. Kapanen
  25. Tuch
  26. Ho Sang
  27. Point-A guy I hope we can grab in the second round.
  28. Cornel
  29. Perlini
    Just missed: Bleackley, , Pastrnak
Guys to watch for: Watson, Goulet, Mangiapane

Note: While I did my best to rank them, I think just a pure 1-30 ranking isn't necessarily the best way to do it.
If I'm an NHL team I would add notes about ceilings, floors, and styles of players.
For example, I have Virtanen at 18, only because I think his ceiling is lower than some other guys, but I see him as a safe pick.

I agree, and those points usually come out in the debate... ranking is the quick view...the explanation comes out in the debate

for example: I think Goldobin, Fabbri, Fiala, and Milano all have a similar "summary".... very high end/explosive offensive talent, questions on how it will translate, and not much of (as Tim Murray would say) "fall back game".

But I have Goldobin high in the 1st, Fabbri in the mids, and Fiala/Milano late... why?

IMO
Goldobin has a Mackinnon level of speed/puck skills. His game is not nearly as refined, or well rounded (or he'd be a top 2 pick), but he does have one rare and elite skill combo. His ceiling is off the charts, but the question of development/game translation leaves a high bust factor. In the end, that off the charts ceiling is too much to ignore.

Fabbri doesn't have the off the charts explosive factor, but in his favor he has more of a fall back game than the rest, less bust factor. He's got a physical/nat/pest style to go with his skating. He's not as well rounded as Bennett, but he's very similar.

Fiala is as boom/bust as it gets...He's much rawer than Goldobin, and thus a more likely bust.

Milano lacks the high end upside that Goldobin's skills provide (the ability to be the creator), and lacks the fall back game that Fabbri has.

Added notes to all my choices. Which helped me juggle my order a bit.

I agree with what you had to say about: McCann, Barbashev, Tuch, and Kempe....

If we draft Reinhart, and somehow trade up for one of those guys... I'll be very happy with this draft.... i'd take all of our picks, and trade them for those Reinhart (move to #1), and one of those 4 (trade up to teens)

NOTES: Really high on Barbashev and Kempe. Both are big strong bullish forwards who would be ideal pick ups. Not as high on Ritchie/Perlini, I have concerns over how well their game translates. Husso might be unusual but from my (albeit limited) views of him he was good. Demko may be high but I really like his combination of size and technique. Karlsson may be high for some but he too is a big, strong, in your face type of forward. DeAngelo is low mainly because of character issues. If it were purely skill, he'd be in my top 10. Fleury may be higher than others but I really like his poise and mature two-way game. Milano and Tuch are the two I've seen basically none of (1 game each) so that ranking is purely from what I've read about them.

I also agree with McCann and Barbashev. The other two that I feel similarly about are McKeown and Fabbri. Ennis is the first player that comes to mind when I watch him.

I put some notes on mine as well.

Love Barbashev and Kempe at 9 and 10

I locked my top 10 in immediately when I started yesterday. I resumed today and found myself waffling on the other 20 before submitting. I do feel Kempe at 10 is a bit of just going with my gut, because there are some seriously talented players I have after him. I saw him play a lot for Modo (more than any other Euro player) watching our prospects there this year and I feel like this kid could really be something.

I'm with you. He reminds me of Girgs.

Big bullish forward who hits, scores and does it all for the team. A poster (can't recall who) mentioned his forechecking issues but I think that can easily be rectified, if we're talking "fall back game" he has it in abundance.

Maybe when everyone's done submitting we can do a combined ranking like we started doing alongside our latest prospect poll.

I remember how close our recent Sabres prospect ranking was as well. Freaky!

Kamenev sounds good to me but I've only seen him twice (U18's).

Anyone else think about how deep this first round could potentially be. I know people call this a weak draft because of the top end talent, but I think there are going to be some pretty nice picks that continue into the 20s and 30s.

I've thought it was pretty good into the early 30's for a "weak draft". Some people have said it really drops off after about 20. I do see a drop off around there, but I think those guys after are still 1st round material or pretty close. This draft stands out in a couple areas to me:

- The top 4. This article uses the charted data that is its premise to reach some conclusions, one of which is that the top 4 in this class projects to be a notably better group than the top 4 in 2011 (RNH, Landeskog, Huberdeau, Larsson) which was highly vaunted at the time. I agree. In the thread for that article on the prospects board I said something along the lines of Reinhart > RNH, and all four will be better than Huberdeau and Larsson, but perhaps not Landeskog. I think that's reasonable. There's no Stamkos, but the depth of the top 4 is very good. Not as good as last year, but last year was truly exceptional in all respects.

- The next 3 or 4. Guys like Nylander, Ehlers, Dal Colle, and Ritchie are pretty good possible picks for your typical forward in the 5-8 area. Nylander and Ehlers have the potential in my eyes to end up the best offensive player in the draft. Dal Colle and Ritchie bring good/great size with great shots, both have a shot at being 30 goal guys, especially Dal Colle. Without actually reviewing all the past picks in that area, I think that stacks up quite favorably.

- Right through to that 20's dropoff, I see many guys who I think have a solid shot at being good NHLers. Look how high Goldobin is on Jame's board. He's pretty high on mine too. Reality is, he'll probably go in the 20's, but he could end up one of the very best offensive players in this draft and his all-around game is already alright. There are many examples of guys who might go at #10 or #12 or be "steals" in the 20's, guys who have the potential to be really good at whatever their NHL role may be, particularly top 6 scoring winger + PP assets and two-way all-around cog + PK aces.

I think the early 2nd round is OK but probably average at best. Some think that most of the good 2nd round-graded talent is actually in the 20's-30 and that the 2nd round will then be barren from the start. I don't see it that way, but the 2nd round does look like it dries up of legit 2nd round talent early on, then the draft snowballs from there, lacking a depth of both 2nd and 3rd round talent. I don't know too much about a lot of the guys slotted in those rounds, though.
