As a Sabres fan I can see out window opening up but they are not realistic contenders till around 2020 IMO.
I expect they will be good for a 5-6 year run. Of course injuries, trades, Cap issues and lottery wins can change any team one way or another. This is what I would guess based on core players and depth for the rising or ready teams now.

Tampa - 2019 through 2022
Winnipeg - 2019 through 2024
Nashville - 2019 through 2023
San Jose - 2019 only
Boston - 2019 through 2022
Dallas - 2019 through 2020
Toronto 2019 through 2025
Penguins - 2019 though 2020
Washington - 2019 only
Columbus - 2019 only
Calgary - 2020 though 2022
Buffalo - 2020 through 2026
Colorado - 2020 through 2026
Edmonton 2021 through the McDavid contact
Vegas - 2021 through 2024

Your window is closed/open until it isn't.

The Sharks window was closed and they made the finals.
The Caps window was closed and they won literally that year

Truth is that anyone who makes the playoffs can win any year it's just rare for worse teams to do it. But the Kings no one saw them winning those cups even 6 months before their first one.. They barely got into the playoffs as an 8th seed.

That year, there will be a CBA and no hockey will be played. The other 129 NHL teams will be angry there hasn't been a cup finals game in Egypt yet because the great Egyptian center Bayek Tutmos passed away earlier that year after breaking all of Wayne Gretzkys records 30 years earlier. The NHLPA believes the NHL is showing bias to non-Egyptian hockey players.

R.I.P. Tutmos.

Way to conservative on some of these. Tampa isn't going to be a bunch of dinosaurs in 3 years. Point will be 25, Hedman will be 30, Stamkos 31, Kucherov 28, etc.

Windows last longer than you think. If you get in and you have talent, you have a chance.

I watched the Caps window close a year before I realized I had apparently been looking at the wrong window.

But in terms of the traditional definition of “window,” I don’t know why you think the Caps are done after this year. At the very least they’ve got their Vezina goalie, top 4 D, top 3 Cs, and top 3 wingers all signed through the next two years. After that they’ll need to figure out how to juggle Vrana, Holtby, Backstrom. But with the cap increasing I don’t see why they’d all of a sudden fall apart.

Thanks for stating the obvious.... you entirely missed the point.

As a Canes fan, I must say that our team is not quite there yet, but we're heading to the right direction. All we need is a solid goalie, a top-6 forward and some old soldiers with playoff experience to play 10-13 minutes at our 4th line. Thank God we have some nice prospects and Svechnikov. I'd say we will be contenders three seasons from now.

Its hard for me to say. Whenever I've just about had it with my hopes, something happens to make me think the cup window is expanded, which is only to be shot down rather quickly.

Truly a roller coaster with this team. No such thing as a cup window in san jose

TB's window is gonna be open longer than anybody wants to believe. We have a number of good prospects still on the way.

Flames window is open. A little light on forwards on the farm for my liking to be trading picks like they're nothing though.

Your window is when you make the playoffs. Any team can win 4 games against anyone in this league. Look at Vegas last year.

The Flames' window is open now. It also lasts beyond 2022. That's only 3 seasons from now.

By then we'll still have:

Valimaki: 23
Kylington: 25
Andersson: 25
Hanifin: 25

Lindholm: 27
Tkachuk: 24
Monahan: 27
Gaudreau: 28

Many of these guys are likely to be much better in 3 years than they are now.

Giordano, at 38, will be the only major piece to be aging. Even then, I still think he will be a strong contributor, if no longer a top paring guy. Brodie will be 31/32, and probably about the same as he is now. Same with Hamonic at 31. Backlund at 33 will probably take a step back from #2 C to #3.

The Flames window with their current core probably ends close to 2025, and that's assuming they don't manage to find other big pieces along the way.

Unless the Flames get an upgrade on defense in the next few years with Giordano aging and find a decent goalie, their window will close in relatively short order...3 years tops. Brodie and Hamonic are nearing free agency and Hamonic will not age well if they resign him. Brodie has never lived up to the hype of that one good season years ago.

Most people said the Caps’ window was closed last year and laughed at the prospect of us going anywhere in the playoffs.

Any season any team can win

I mean...our window is passing slowly but surely. The Wild need guys like Coyle and Nino to continue heating up and never cool down again, along with Dubs playing well in net, and the guys staying healthy. If we go into the playoffs with all skaters relatively healthy, and people are not cold, the Wild can make a run I truly believe.
