I fiddled around with the search options at hockey-reference.com. This is what I came up with: Eight different players aged 19 or younger scored 40 goals in an NHL season. Dale Hawerchuk did it twice and was the youngest to do it.
Full list:
Jimmy Carson 87-88 (55)
Wayne Gretzky 79-80 (51)
Dale Hawerchuk 81-82 (45)
Mario Lemieux 84-85 (43)
Owen Nolan 91-92 (42)
Brian Bellows 83-84 (41)
Eric Lindros 92-93 (41)
Rick Nash 2003-04 (41)
Dale Hawerchuk 82-83 (40)

btw: the date to determine the age of a player in a certain season is February 1st.

Wooah, I might even go off on a limb here and say that that would be decent compensation when giving up Gretzky.

He'll be here all week, folks.

But seriously: there's a reason he never broke 40 goals- let alone 50- after leaving Edmonton. Carson was a creampuff diva who couldn't take a hit.

Although, to be fair, the Oilers made out nicely in the deal that sent him to Detroit (Adam Graves, Petr Klima, Joe Murphy, Jeff Sharples). Graves, Klima and even Murphy all proved key contributors to the '90 Cup win, and Sharples was traded to NJ for another big piece, Ruotsalainen.
