Crazy how every defenceman goes out with an injury after scoring a goal.

Kronwall
Green
DeKeyser
Ericsson

All have experienced that during last weeks.

Wings defensive goal scoring is not only terrible, it also appears to be cursed. Yikes.

Interesting. But oh well XO over Ericsson. I'll take it. Actually D probably improved a bit. **** I'd take 2008 Lilja over Ericsson.

Well lets hope Ericsson gets healthy, he isn't as bad as people say. In the meantime Ouellet should absolutely play over Kindl.

Don't know if he will, with a game the next day, they needed to call somebody up should someone go down in the game on Sunday they will probably go straight to the plane right after so that is more than likely the real reason for this callup. Hope XO plays both games though.

Probably just Holland keeping their future extensions in reasonable order.

Won't be that hard. He already is

Name a trait Ericsson has

Clearing the front of the net doesn't count. He forced that on himself by turning it over

Better skater. Bigger. Better offensively (much better production in the AHL). XO has 25 NHL games. And he looked pretty rough at the end of his NHL stint last season. Saying he's better than anyone on our team right now is based on nothing but the fact that he is a prospect, just like Kindl, Ericsson and Smith were all hyped as prospects too.

I like XO. But his first order of business is proving he can cut it as a 3rd pairing d-man in the NHL. Maybe after that he can start challenging Ericsson.

XO is a 3rd pairing NHL defenseman that is stuck in the AHL due to a numbers game. Ericsson is a 3rd pairing defenseman playing 1st pairing minutes and getting exposed. The difference is one is vastly overpaid for a ridiculous term and somehow plays top line minutes even though pretty much all statistics show that he is garbage and he doesn't pass the eye test this season.

Ericsson plays 2nd pairing minutes. What are you even talking about? He's 4th in TOI/GP, 5th in EV TOI/GP. He's also 2nd among our D in +/- so I must have missed the part where he's getting exposed so badly.
Ouellet's job is to play at a similar level as Quincey, because that's the spot that opens up next year. Or, outplay Smith so he becomes expendable.

XO's not only viewed by the Wings as worse than Ericsson, he's viewed by the team as worse than Quincey, Smith and Kindl.

I don't think they're totally wrong. Kindl was certainly a better AHL dman than XO's shown to date.

By that logic they must've thought Nyquist was worse than Cleary, Emmerton, and Sammy in 2013.

So guess they've been wrong before

This is the same team that at one point thought Dan Cleary was better than Tomas Tatar and Gustav Nyquist. Babcock certainly didn't agree with your assessment either, he wanted XO as an everydayer two years ago. Generally speaking, young players have to exhaust their waiver eligibility just to make the team regardless of how good they are. Which, of course, is reactionary and stupid as hell.

Not necessarily relevant to the discussion above, but it's important to remember Ouellet is two years younger than Marchenko, three years younger than Jensen, a year younger than Sproul, and 5 months younger than Russo (this one surprised me). Marchenko may have established himself in the NHL sooner, but the extra development time can make a big difference, especially for a defenseman.

Yep that's why they wanted to buy out Sammy, and Emmerton played a whopping 18 games that year (not that Nyquist was ever competing for the job of 4th line C but still).

At one point Dan Cleary WAS better than Tatar and Nyquist. He was arguably better than both of them as late as 2012-13.
And it doesn't matter that Babcock wanted XO up. Because after a while, he sent XO down and went with Marchenko instead. Young players that want to be NHLers before they're out of waiver options have to take the chances they get. That's what Larkin did, that's what Sheahan, Jurco and Marchenko did. That's what AA is close to doing. Let's see what XO can do now.
