That's not what waivers is for, as if the Jets wanted to do that, he'd have to go back on waivers and the Caps would be able to claim him right back, and send him to AHL Hershey (where he was bound originally).

Waivers is designed to keep deep teams from burying guys in the minors when other teams have a role in the NHL for them. It doesn't permit teams to claim guys who are already headed to the minors and turn around and stash them in the minors themselves. The original team gets to put in another claim in such a case.

The Jets get time to evaluate him and see if he's a fit on their NHL roster. If, like Buffalo last year, they find him wanting, he goes back on waivers before he'd go to the Moose. He's a Jet or a Hershey Bear, most likely.

AJF is a speedy, defensively responsible winger who's effective on the PK. His offensive upside is limited, but he's taken further steps in his development each year and had a mini break-out offensively at the AHL level last year (34 points in 44 games). I'd be surprised if he ever tops 25 or 30 points at the NHL level, but he doesn't need to in order to be worth his roster spot. At only $750K cap hit, he's a solid value buy as a 4LW PK specialist.

I remember Ray Ferraro talking about this guy at the world juniors

"He does a lot of work with the crossovers and cutbacks and toe drags, but it never leads to a single thing"

He's one of those guys who really seems to "get" that this is his role though. That has some value. You're not trying to turn a scorer into a checker or anything. Pretty plug 'n play as a 4th line energy guy. But yeah, the upside is pretty...limited.

Jets organization loves those guys. If Maurice was still here he'd probably see second line and pp time.
