The following is a list of the players who have missed the WJC due to NHL (or other professional or senior) commitments. I found that Macman made essentially the same thread nearly 11 years ago (http://hfboards.mandatory.com/showthread.php?t=123004) but I was unable to update that thread. Like Macman, I'm going to focus on 1982 onward when Canada started sending legitimate teams. I've made some changes to Macman's original list (impressed that he made the list using Total Hockey) and updated it for the tournaments since 2005. If there are errors, let me know and I will be happy to edit accordingly.

Talking about losing some firepower! That had to be 5 out of our top 6.

Yes considering that Reichel and Jagr were dominant the year before and that Holik wasn't that far behind, the 1991 Czechoslovakian team could have been loaded up front. Palffy and Rucinsky was already a good place to start.

I'm curious if anyone can confirm this. Did Czechoslovakia just not invite Nedved in 1990 because he went to the WHL? I think that I remember that but I'm not certain.

He didn’t just go to the WHL. He was an actual defector. They took that stuff pretty seriously in the days of the Iron Curtain.

Yes my wording was clumsy there, I know that he defected. Dumb question on my part though I suppose since the communist government was still around when the team would have been picked for 1990.

Had to look up the whole roster:

Team Czechoslovakia - U20 World Championships 1991 - Player Stats

Like you said, Palffy and Rucinsky but also Stumpel, Straka and Slegr on D. They also had Chechmanek and Hnilicka in net. If you add Reichel, Jagr, Holik, Nedved to Straka, Palfy, Stumpel and Rucinsky... that is one hell of a forward corps. Both goalies went on to be NHLers as well.

I really don't think the Czechs or Slovaks will ever come up with a roster this potentially good again.

That’s a deadly lineup. And I’m guessing that some of the guys that stayed and played at home instead of coming to the NHL were probably pretty decent too.

What was funny, that in 90s there was a promise here by our Ice Hockey prominent people, that players playing in Canada should not be nominated. They were named as "Traitors". And because of that, Zdeno Chara never played on this tournament.

Who was a major loss at the time, but doesn't seem so in hindsight because his NHL career never took off?

Not exactly what you were looking for but I remember Devante Smith Pelley getting sent back to play and getting injured. I can’t remember if it was during exhibition play or one of the first few round robins. That was considered a substantial loss

I updated this for the summer 2022 tournament, but the timing of the tournament makes it difficult to figure out which players are essentially not allowed to go, which players just don't want to go, and which players are injured. To simplify things I just added any player who missed the first edition of the 2022 tournament plus any players who are not returning from the December tournament for the August tournament. I'm not confident that I named all of the players who dropped out from the December edition of the tournament.

I appreciate any information regarding players that I missed or players who are injured.

It's funny as Czechs are missing 2 to 3 goalies, a few key D and 2 good forwards yet I think they'll finish 5th with or without those guys.lol.

D .. krutil, Moravec and alscher
F... Brabenec and Novak
G... Malek, malik and one more who's name I forgot

Blomqvist for Finland this summer should be added. Easily top 3 goalie for this tournament but finnish coach is acting like a child.

Ciernik didn't opt out, he simply was unable to participate. idk about the others.

Brabenec is rehabbing an injury. Same as before: idk about the others.

Blomqvist wasn't chosen.

Remember: this is a list of only players who themselves chose to opt out. Not injured/ill players, or players who weren't chosen.

I mean he opted out of the vaccine so technically that is an opt out. And the others the same wanting to prepare for the Slovak league (Krajc). Lasak also chose to opt out, although I don’t know why.

Thanks for the extra information. You're right that it isn't for injured players, which would be too difficult to track over the years, or for non-selected players, which would be more of an opinion call on who to include and who not to include. This redux tournament is trickier to categorize but still, injuries and non-selected players are out.
