It's not going to happen. The Cap space next year, is even more important than it is this year for the Leafs.

on the surface it seems down right stupid.

But he said it's a 0$ cap charge for this year and 2.5 next year, I'm not sure why but sure enough it is in fact a free buyout this year there is no charge.

does anyone know why that is?
Looks like it is because his base salary was staggered. Year 1 it was 2.5. Years 2 and 3 was 5M, and his last year is 7.5M. That is why next season there is no cap followed by 2.5M the following should they buy him out.

All buyouts seem to have a low number in Year 1, no idea why, same as OEL and Matt Murray.
I’d say Murray is bought out before Brodie.

That's a pretty wild buyout structure but I'd be shocked if a team on the cusp with money available wouldn't take him for free if this is really where they're at. He was horrendous in the playoffs but has been steady for 3 years. Buffalo makes sense they could use a stay at home D and have over 16 million to play with

Would make more sense to do this instead

To :hawks
28th overall

To team that is not on Brodie NTC list
D TJ Brodie (50% retained by Hawks)

To :leafs
Asset or assets team acquiring Brodie gives up

Hawks get 1st, Leafs clear $5M in cap and get some asset (Likely pick or picks) and ? team gets top 4 vet RD at $2.5M cap hit

-- I assume Brodie would block trade to Chicago thus the 3rd team --

Hawks eating 2.5 definitely doesn't garner them a 1st outright, Brodie at 2.5 could maybe return a 1st or 2nd but Leafs certainly wouldn't pay that to dump him

I am not sure he is, Frank said they are trying to trade him because they seem him as an LTIR candidate and they don't want to use LTIR.

We’re not buying him out and we’re not paying someone to take him. Seravalli is in full summer clickbait mode.

if they did trade him they aren't paying the 28th pick to do it he's still a legitimate top 4 d

And who would replace him that would be at least as good and at be paid at most $5mil (his cap hit)?

The problem is that our D sucks, we have lots of depth but no true #1-2 defencemen. Brodie, Rielly etc. are all playing more than they should. As a #3-4, Brodie is a good player.

Brodie is a really good RHD, why on earth would we do that? Makes no sense. Worth every bit of his cap hit. He’s probably regressed from a top pair RD to top 3-4 RD but he’s still very good.
Maybe cause Treliving does not like him, didn’t he have him in Calgary.

Assuming Treliving successfully extends Matthews, Nylander and Marner, this would make zero sense:

- 2023/24: cap isn't THAT tight, our core are all on the same deals as last year. Should be able to ice a similar quality team to 2022/23, i.e. a contender

- 2024/25: Matthews and Nylander extensions kick in - likely a moderate raise for Matthews, but a big raise for Nylander. This will be THE tightest cap season for us. Tavares is still on the books

- 2025/26 onwards: Marner extension kicks in, but the albatross Tavares contract finally ends, freeing up $11 mil in cap space

Shifting cap from 2023/24 to 2024/25 makes no sense, when 2024/25 is the main issue. Plus Brodie, while aging, is still a quality top 4 dman - we're fine with having him for 1 more year at $5 mil.

If we want to free up cap space for 2023/24, without negatively impacting 2024/25, the most likely move by far will be finding a taker for Matt Murray, with some sweetener attached.
