I watched a different version of this over on hockeyfights.com. Anyway I usually check out both these guys--because one was a former Rangers draft pick and the other has been on top of the food chain for a long time. McGrattan has floored a few in his time too. It comes with the game he plays. You don't get to see Maggio after the fight here. He's circling around kind of like he's absolutely gassed and then the camera closes in on his face and he's a bloody mess. A line of blood trickling down the side of his head past his ear and the rest of his face is bloody too. I wouldn't be surprised to hear he's got a broken orbital or cheek bone.

It was one hell of a fight.

ignoring something and saying they can't do it because you find it offensive, are two fundamentally different things, as I suspect you know.

beleive it or not, not everyone has to abide by your decision of " if that were me......"

Not sure why you're portraying this as individuals trying to assume a tyrannical posture over society.

If a majority of people find a thing blatantly unethical, that thing usually has a pretty short lifespan. For example, paying people to destroy their own brains for a cheap thrill.

free will. and if you find something unethical, whose ethics are we using to make this decision ? Yours ? for everyone ? what if I dont share your sense of ethics ? I should be prevented from doing what I think ( EVEN IF I AM WRONG) is in my best interest because you think its not ?

that's the definition of tyranny.

If people chose, fully cognizant of the consequences, to accept money to do something that might be detrimental to THEIR health, that's their decision. People choose to box, jump out of planes, crab fish, drive fast cars, drink too much eat to much. That's their decisions. Not yours, not mine.

the track record of trying to protect people from themselves is soooo abysmally poor that I'm astounded by the number of proponents it still has.

McGrattan has made his living out of what he does. When he was growing and developing into a hockey player there were guys who fought on every team---a lot of them really well. It's not a surprise that some coach spots this 6'8'' kid and developed him in that direction. Of course like other fighters he would defend fighting--sees value in what he does. He defends his teammates and his teammates are going to see value in that at least some of the time too. Now some fans might think differently and see the game trending in another direction. That's their outlook and I'll agree that it's an outlook that's gradually become more prevalent--the game is slowly getting away from fighting. Attaching some kind or morality and expecting other people to fall in line with your viewpoint though--that's a bit arrogant.

Finding the answer to this is as simple as reading what I typed the first time:

If a majority of people find a thing blatantly unethical, that thing usually has a pretty short lifespan.

So no, it's not about "my" ethics. This is about a broad public agreement that a practice is unethical. Hence the question I asked in the first place:

The post you replied to said:

that's the definition of tyranny.

No, it's really not at all. Our society is structured such that when the large majority finds a practice unethical (distinct from immoral) there is often an agreement to no longer permit that practice.

That's a lot closer to "democracy" than it is to "tyranny". Tyranny would be one person, or small group of people, projecting their ethics onto others. In this case you're actually in the shrinking minority who think it's a great idea for people to deliberately destroy their brains for sport.

If people chose, fully cognizant of the consequences, to accept money to do something that might be detrimental to THEIR health, that's their decision. People choose to box, jump out of planes, crab fish, drive fast cars, drink too much eat to much. That's their decisions. Not yours, not mine.

Do you think you would be allowed to set up a pro boxing match in your backyard through your own "free will"? Of course not, you'd need to apply for a license which may not even be available where you live, because it's broadly recognized that people should not in fact be allowed to beat **** out of each other for money at will.
