Well, another day and another game for the Winnipeg Jets! I have not been too successful with making GDTs, although I still do not have a regulation loss...I'm 1-0-2...so I don't know why @Ginger Papa keeps wanting to send out the mob for me...
Oh well... I thought about what the GDT could be about for tonight's game, so I put together something a bit more serious. Is that me who said that? Anyway, my theme for the GDT is...
As many of you know, I have been collecting sports autographs for quite some time. It all started about 1995, when one of my co-workers (at the time) showed me his autograph collection. It was quite impressive, and I asked him how he got so many. He said that he got most of them in-person, while the rest he sent away for. I thought this was pretty cool, so I started to send some hockey cards away to get signed. Little by little, I received a few back each week, but to my horror, most of the autographs were smudged because the surface of the cards that I sent were not made for signatures. Disappointed, my co-worker suggested I send blank index cards instead, and he showed me a bunch that he had received. The only problem with that was they just had a signature on them, with no indication on who it was or who sent it. That was no good, so I thought a bit, and came up with a solution: I would print my own cards using my computer printer. They were simple in design, but when I received them back, there was no smudging! Hooray! Some of the players I wrote to even liked my cards:
So I continued to send out to as many players as I could. Finally, I wanted to show them off, so I started my own web site on GEOCITIES and it became quite popular. I began with writing to hockey players, but then I started writing to everyone, from football and baseball, to lacrosse, golf, tennis, and even celebrities!
It became so popular that I ended up getting my own web address! At it's height, my web site was ranked #2 behind eBay for sports autographs! Since I hand wrote every letter, I was doing around 2000 a year, and as you can guess, it started to take its toll on my “spare time”. Between updating the web site, answering e-mails, writing letters, printing index cards, and dealing with the trolls, I ended up shutting down my web site near the end of 2002, five years after I started it.
I still collect, but almost exclusively hockey and mostly draft picks. It is not as fun as it used to be, as most of the NHL teams have stopped giving the players their fan mail, so I'm glad I've cut back on the hobby. I have quite a big collection now, with over 9000 autographed items on my web site, with more still in the envelopes waiting to be opened and displayed!
