I know it's not the cool thing to say here, but I like the deal. People here seem to not understand where the market is in the NHL.

Of course no one does.

Nor does anyone want to hear the fact about the Illitch family not wanting a lottery team going into a new arena. But that's what i'm expecting Detroit to be this season.

but it's really not a good idea for the Wings to be giving 32 year olds 6 year contracts

Maybe it's not ideal, but what's the alternative? I just like the idea of having a reliable 2 way center on our roster. Take a look at the Isles board, he's pretty universally liked there. Also, I'm not sure that it will be an anchor for us. I can't see the cap going up so modestly the next few years like we saw this year, plus those bad contracts that we currently have will be gone in 3ish years. I just can't get too upset about this signing.

I hated the Richards signing - it was obvious he was toast - but at least it was a one year deal. I wouldn't mind Neilsen if you paid him much more per year on a 2-3 year deal. The 6 year deal is gonna go south about halfway through.

Zetterberg, Larkin, Sheahan, Nyquist, Tatar are also in the top nine. That leaves one spot in the top nine and maybe one spot on the fourth line.

Could have traded Mantha for a top 4 d-man. More important to have an AHL prospect than an actual NHL d-man.

Here's thoughts on Nielsen from the mod of the Isles forum:

Smaller forward, not physical, plays a good two way game, can play in all situations, good #2 center, great #3 center, shootout specialist, more of a playmaker than a scorer but has a great wrist shot. He was definitely a fan favorite.

He will be missed, but he took the money which is something most of us didn't think he would.

Yeah, like I said I dont like the term however Frans is a great player who will help take the center load off of Larkin and a dinosaur Zetterberg (who should be playing mostly wing this year). Maybe I'm just desensitized to Hollands terrible long term contracts

I think you will end up loving him when the dust settles. He is the perfect 2C in my opinion. Great on PP, PK and shootouts. Works hard and is a team player. Was hoping he would come to Winnipeg! I do think the term was a bit over the top though...

At least it sounds like Frans is a good guy, but like, what a waste of the next six years.

How long until Mantha and AA are waiver-eligible? I assume at least one will get shipped out for a spare Legwand at the TDL this year.
