This is weird...and hopefully not true...

Take this for what it is worth. Bob McCown, a well connected sports talk personality on Sportsnet's Prime Time Sports just mentioned he has heard the Detroit Red Wings, Detroit Tigers and Little Caesars are up for sale, stating the Ilitch's have made this known.

This all came about during a discussion with a caller discussing the Babcock to Toronto rumors.

Isnt little caesars their money printing franchise? why would they sell it?

McCown has to be careful when he makes this kind of claim. he can actually get sued

I mean, why? Aren't the Wings still profitable? Sure he's getting up there in age, but he's got sons to take over and one of them basically has judging from personal appearances.

Just because you are a well known sports personality doesn't mean you have business connections.

Does he?

McCown brings up again that the Ilitch Family has put their enterprise up for sale and making retirement plans. Can't say how long it will take.

Is this man Pejorative Slured? Mike and Marian have been "retired" for years. They're nothing more than figureheads. And the "kids" are nowhere near close to retiring.

Also, selling Little Caesar's, the Tigers, and the Wings wouldn't just allow anyone in the Illitch family to retire. They'd have to sell off MotorCity, Olympia Entertainment, Blue Line, and whatever other entities they own if this were for the sake of "retirement."

Lastly, why on earth would Illitch be looking to sell the Tigers when he so desperately wants to see them win a Championship and I sure as hell can't imagine they're looking to sell the Wings after "working so hard" to squelch money, backing, and breaks from the City for the new arena.

Probably just speculation centered around tax planning. It's complicated. IIRC this was the reason the junior Wrigleys were forced to sell the Cubs due to inheritence tax issues

There was hockey before ilitch and there will be hockey after ilitch. What's the big deal? Datsyuk and Zetterberg were scoring goals the last decade. Not mike ilitch. It's just another rich person selling property for tax reasons, if true.

I live in Toronto, and Bobcat is one of the worst radio personalities on air, most in Toronto would agree. He has baseless arguments and says things that are not true at all. He was on air from 4-7 today and all he did was talk about Mike Babcock going to Toronto Maple Leafs after this season because they can pay him (uhh.. Mike Illitch can too) and how Babcock wants power and he could be the coach AND GM in Toronto.

Just another media blowhard vying for attention.

What a nice guy Illitch is to spend decades acquiring the necessary property, securing public handouts and wading through a sea of red tape to turn over the new arena district (and the inevitable boost in revenue) to a new owner rather than his family.

You mean this guy isn't "well connected"? But he totally looks like he's in the know when it comes to billionaire businessmen. :sarcasm:

I absolutely believe in this. Once Mike dies Chris Ilitch will turn out to be the second coming of Fredo Corleone. He already made the call to trade Fister for 3 trashbags last winter

In response to rumor Ilitches looking to sell #RedWings, #Tigers, senior VP Jim Devellano told me it's not true. Used colorful language.

Jim Devellano: Mike and Marian Ilitch "are committed to the hockey. They're committed to the baseball. They're committed to the city."
