I caught the final game of the third set at lunch.

Stunning loss for Nadal. Yeah, he's a clay court god but the dude's won at All England before. No excuse to go out in straight sets in the first. Gotta believe that's the first time that's ever happened to him in a Major.

I like RF, but I think the world (and specifically, Britian) is ready for Andy Murray to finally win in his backyard and get that specific monkey on his back. What an incredible story that would be.

I wonder if Nadal's knees are troubling him again. Can't see any other reason why he'd go down in straight sets.

If Andy Murray won Wimbledon the UK would explode with joy, they haven't won a men's title in over 75 years now.

Has to be a reason. Granted, he had a deep run at the French with the win, then it's just a short two weeks to move to a completely different surface...I can't imagine it's an easy transition for these folks.

I wouldn't want to play on grass with bad knees either. As goofy as it looks when you're sliding around on the red clay, grass footing is even less certain. If you're second-guessing your mobility, you're in trouble.

Who knows. But yeah, that's a pretty epic shocker.

He's lost in the first round and the second round the last two years. You look at his track record at Wimbledon, and he either gets to the finals our flushes out really early. He's great on clay, but just really good everywhere else. He's got 12 Grand Slams, and 8 are from the French alone.

Yeah, he's the Anti-Sampras....although major difference being that Nadal at least nabbed a Wimbledon title, his otherwise spotty grass-court record non-withstanding.

That's why achieving a career Grand Slam's a big deal, and virtually unheard of all in the same year. It takes two completely different styles of game to win on grass versus clay. Rocket Rod Laver laughs at your use of the term "clay-court specialist."

Can't believe Nadal just lost in straight sets in Round 1.

Wide open now for Federer I would think to get his 8th.

Brackets now have as favored:

Djokovic
Ferrer

Federer
Murray

Well, not anymore.

It's because they said he couldn't wear his orange shoes.

He'd reached 36 quarterfinal matches in Majors until today.

Wow. Federer and Nadal out early. The stage is set for Murray to take Wimbledon by storm.

I've never been a fan of clay court tennis. Players look like they're sliding around in dog poo....plus the endless baseline rallies. Give me serve & volley on a grass court any day.

Me either. I suppose I'd liken clay court tennis to a bunker defense...sit back and wait it out.

Grass is fun....getting to play with the angles of the court...it's where you get to see some of the really genius shot-making. Admittedly, the serve is a huge weapon on grass, so someone with a thunder serve who can place the ball well (like Becker when he played) can get a long way just with his serve....and that sometimes can get dull. That's why I also really like the women's game on grass; best of both worlds.

Sharapova out now too. Also, sad to see the current state of American Tennis; 25 Americans started in the main singles draws....only 3 remain.

Michelle Larcher de Britto has the only grunt more annoying than Sharapova's and Azarenka's, so I laughed like hell over this.

As for Fed, his opponent played an amazing match. Fed was OK. Couldn't summon his best at a point when he normally wouldn't need to. His plight is the inconsistency and good days/so-so days that creep in with the age/mileage. I think I'll wind up regretting my inability to stop measuring Federer against himself. I'd much rather just enjoy watching him play, but it's hard to do.

Joker and Murray may be licking chops, but Wimbledon is due for one of those years with a rogue champion, someone who's not part of the chain of succession among the all-time greats of the era. Just trying to figure out who that is, I gotta get on that draw sheet and try to figure it out.

Meantime, I'm back calling lines this year at ATP Newport (first time since 1998, yikes). I'll be doing WTT again this year as well. No heckling please. :D

Did you manage to catch the female judge get hit in the face with a Mardy Fish serve? Ouch.

I always think calling lines at a tournament would be fun....then I see something like that and quickly reconsider.

It's hard to measure Fed against anyone but himself. During his peak years he was so, so dominant....no one could touch him. Everyone kept waiting for Roddick to be his counter-puncher and that never materialized. It's really been only recently (last 5 years) that Novak, Rafa, Murray, Ferrer and co have caught up to him. For a while, it was a one-man show....no one else to compare him to.

Congrats for you Brits!

I know Gentleman Tim came close a couple times, but once this year's draw opened up the title seemed like Andy's for the taking. Very awesome for him and for the UK.

I missed it this AM on the road...but looks like NBC is re-playing it from 3p-6p ET today. I'll pretend like I don't know the outcome.
